I just got this LP at goodwill for a single dollar bill and it is like the best synth-pop-R&B I'd never heard before. I decided to buy it solely based on the song "Should I Say Yes" that was posted on the StyPod a couple weeks back and its like the best blind buy of all time.

Has anyone else heard this? What else is worth hearing? Wow.

"Seafood Mama"???? Changing their name to Nu Shooz was their smartest career move, in that case.

Now djdee, you do realize you're going to have to take back a few things about Chuck Eddy. He's a huge fan of this band!

Also, JBR to thread.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 29 November 2004 05:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh I agree w/ Chuck Eddy all the time! But this sounds a lot like the Junior Boys to me so I don't see it as being that far off of the standard taste of this board, whereas 3rd eye blind...woooof.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 29 November 2004 06:10 (nineteen years ago) link

I wonder- was "seafood mama" a reference to the lyrics of the andrews sisters huge 30s swing hit "Hold Tight"?

("I want some seafood . . . . . Mama! /
shrimps and rice / they're very nice" etc.)

It's a nonsense song that's incredibly awesome and catchy.

hey guys get yr confusion straight! seafood mama were indeed named after said andrews sisters ditty quoted above, but they turned into portland's OTHER great '80s husband-wife band quarterflash instead, not nu shooz! i do indeed love nu shooz though -- and if the junior boys have any VOCALS as lively as theirs (which i doubt) i sure would like to know which songs. (or even any vocals as lively as when 3rd eye blind useta sound kinda like ian hunter or badfinger for that matter...)

chuck, Monday, 29 November 2004 09:03 (nineteen years ago) link

I agree about the vocals, although I'd pick the Junior Boys over 3EB in a heartbeat.

I saw the "Should I Say Yes" video on VH1's "We Are The Eighties" while flying cross-country Jet Blue a few weeks ago. It warmed my heart. There was a fleeting moment in the late '80s when I was crushing on both halves of the duo.

I have just moved to San Francisco. Is there a reason I am hearing 'I Can't Wait' EVERYWHERE? Like in shops, on the radio, it was even on Family Guy last night. I'm pretty sure it's the original not some heavy sampling.

Now that we're on the subject, what's the name of a similar mid eighties synth-dance act who covered "(I Know) I'm Losing You"? For years I assumed it was Nu Shooz.

xp Well yeah. I was really happy the first time I heard it over here. But I am hearing it every day. Is is like the national anthem of the Bay Area?

Not the real Village People, Monday, 12 October 2009 21:35 (fourteen years ago) link

Among the most notable covers of "I'm Losing You" was a 1970 version by Motown rock band Rare Earth for their Ecology album. Rare Earth's ten-minute cover was edited for single release, and peaked one position higher than the Temptations' original on the U.S. pop charts, at number seven. The song was later covered by Rod Stewart on his 1971 album Every Picture Tells A Story. During the 1980s, on a Dallas, Texas-based Oak Lawn Records label, the song was covered by the group Uptown and transformed into an upbeat dance tune. This version achieved popularity at Dallas' famed Starck nightclub due to early play by DJ Rick Squillante and became a standard in many U.S. nightclubs, reaching the No. 80 spot on Billboard's Hot 100 in 1987.

I Can't Wait was an especially big deal on the radio in the Pacific Northwest. I remember hearing it all the time for much longer than it was a hit nationally. It has held up well over the years.

So both "I Can't Wait" and "Point of no Return" either shared the chart or appeared on the charts within the year of 2 other tunes with the same name, all great. Stevie Nix and Expose, respectively. Pretty cool. Kinda like the big "Jump" situation in, uh, '84?
