SOS Band - Classic or dud?

Is the SOS Band or the band responsible for such hits as "take your time", "just be good to me" or "the finest" classic or dud?

Classic, being that "Take Your Time" was later sampled in the also classic "Strobelite Honey" by Black Sheep.

"Take Your Time" and "Just Be Good To Me" are both classics. Can't say I'm wildly familiar with them otherwise.

i always meant to get more into 'em. the singles are excellent.

Absolutely classic. One of the lushest sounding of the 80's R&B groups.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 31 December 2004 06:36 (nineteen years ago) link

Absolute classic - greatest song = No Lies 12", greatest moment = the WTF is going on with EQ breakdown moment 2/3rds of the way through the song.

Classic when Jam & Lewis produced (hit singles except for "Take Yr Time"), not a dud but just ok when they didn't. Best album IMO is Sands of Time w/ "the Finest" and "Even When You Sleep." Mary Davis = shiver-inducing voice. Singles or the budget Best of SOS Band are probably your best investment.
If you like this 80s techno-soul, try the UK group Loose Ends next.

Hangin' On A String IS better than the SOS songs for me, and you could well argue that Beats International and Richard X/Kelis render their big hits irrelevant now too. dud by consequence!

SOS Band had a few great hits and did not harm whatsoever, but I think the Pointer Sisters are grossly overlooked in comparison... (sorry for soapboxing on such an innocent thread.)

donut christ (donut), Friday, 31 December 2004 17:11 (nineteen years ago) link

specifically mid to late 70s Pointer Sisters. (I wouldn't be upset if I never heard "I'm So Excited" ever again in my life. "Automatic" on the other hand...)

Nah, The Finest > Finest Dreams. Better drum programming + longer (and uses it's length) which in a close call situation like this is important.

I have very good memories of S.O.S. Band, but haven't heard them in a bazillion years. I bought two singles and an album, eons ago.

side one of Just The Way You Like It is my fave R&B of the 80's

sos, in dutch, is slang for cocaine

they dont have anything to do with that right?

I doubt it.. I think it's after the term for "emergency/help needed", although you never know.

nine months pass...
Fred Wesley played and did horn arrangements for SOS Band. [bio]

For similar stuff (more synths than horns, though), the Mastercuts Classic 80s Groove collections are nice. [here] and.. there's a Volume 2 somewhere as well.

one year passes...

I have officially flipped over about 6 or 7 songs from this band. Some I remember from way back when and some I don't. Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, take a bow.

"Tell Me If You Still Care" (I can't get this out of my head)
"For Your Love"
"Even When You Sleep"
"No One's Gonna Love You" (in truth, this is my absolute fave out of all of them but don't tell anyone)
"Just The Way You Like It" (I'm certain I had the 7" single)
"Just Be Good To Me" (ditto)

Bimble, Sunday, 2 September 2007 06:10 (sixteen years ago) link

Also "For Your Love" has a really badass bass line.

Bimble, Sunday, 2 September 2007 06:11 (sixteen years ago) link

Good time for this thread to be revived - just yesterday I was driving myself nuts trying to remember who did "Take Your Time". (Shalamar? Gap Band?) I never did remember correctly.

Funny you say that Alfred cuz I woke up today and put on Alexander O'Neal's "Hearsay" first thing! Wanted to hear that Flyte Tyme sound first thing.

Obv. should've had my coffee "first thing" in order to avoid the repetition : )

Hearsay is like top ten all-time for me.

Early stuff no longer on Spotify? And I assume other streaming services? :( So sad, was a staple of my high school years, and the YouTube versions don't sound as good.

All their albums are there on my (Dutch) Spotify - they weren’t the previous times I checked, so I’m going to have myself a nice little S.O.S. weekend, girl!
