GOOD Trance

Is there any? Or is "good trance" a contradiction in terms? "Good" is defined here as 'won't make me puke.' In practical terms, I could play the hypothetical "good trance" between Music for Films and EVOL and not miss a beat. Help me out if it is that you can.

Is Kaito trance? Cuz Special Life is like the best album ever.

Well you must check out early releases (1991-2 only - no further) on Harthouse.

No there isn't any good Trance.

good trance = DFA comp #2

also, we just got Dance Dance Revolution for PS2 at the house for xmas and after listening to all these songs, i'm starting to enjoy it a bit. only to practice my moves and all, but yeah

Jam & Spoon - "Stella" is classic proto-trance.

I like lots of Sasha and Digweed mixes and productions. Excursions mix is great.

There is some excellent discussion of trance on one of the Kompakt threads if I remember correctly.

what about psychedelic stuff? I like going to the forest and getting mashed up and looking at all the little hippie girls. sometimes. It is pity this music has such a bad rep because objectively speaking the rhythm is a good rhythm to dance to, and it's also good at half-speed when it turns into dub. But the hippie thing is a turnoff.

if you want classic mid 90s trance then search for the Abduction compilation on Solid State - the best collection i ever encountered personally. i think trance went a bit awry after that and i was never really into either the light Perfecto-y stuff or the hallucinogenic/psychedelic stuff so don't really know more recent stuff.

For me, good trance = very early Harthouse.

I've been digging through some classic trance singles trying to figure out if the synth line in Mickey Factz "Do My Do" is an actual sample or just coincidentally exactly like something my friend used to play in the early 00s.

Some of this stuff is almost listenable taken out of context. Enjoying Cygnus X's Superstring and Energy 52's Cafe del Mar. I hate the stiff unquantized percussion in most of it, but the synth lines can be pretty effective at what they are trying to achieve.

Any favorite cheesy trance songs I should listen to? I thought of starting a youtube thread, but there is a ton of muck to sort through.

Not necessarily trance, but I do like the proggy stuff done by Milton Jackson. His Crash album takes everything that was warm and subtle and moving from the minimal/soulful scene and crans it up. Also: Deadmau5.

I listened to that Mickey Factz song, and the synth reminded me of this tune, which was a big hit in 1993 or 1994:

I like how that one keeps on building all the way through, the best part only kicks in after 4 minutes or so.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 17:42 (fourteen years ago) link

xp - Thanks Siegbran. I liked the first two you posted, as well as the Deadmau5 (I bought this single off of be4tp0rt a while back) and the last few on the thread.

The linked thread (So, what is your opinion of Trance?) was a good read as well. I had a good friend & roommate from, like, 1999 to 2003, who used to pump this stuff every time he threw parties (eventually he learned how to DJ and is a resident at some club here playing tech house stuff) and for a while I took part in a lot of the partying, so I got sooo sick of this shit after a while. Every once in a while I like to come back to it and try to dig up the classics. I definitely like the darker or more melancholy stuff the best.

Next up, I am going to dig up a prog house thread and spam a bunch of youtube clips. You've been warned, ILM!

Here's a few more popular trance tunes from the same era (early 90s) that I think are still great:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9YNWok3vNw

(The vocal version of the latter one is one of the first examples of pop trance I ever heard, but the non-vocal mix is the true classic.)

i've recently discovered this type-of trance music, i think they call it "high tech psytrance". no idea how the hell you'd dance to it, but it's fun to listen to, it's like downing a handful of adderall with a cup of coffee.

Love that track. First heard it on either the Logic Trance or Trancemaster series way back when but only found out it was Namlook a couple of years ago.

The Logic Trance 2 compilation still holds up pretty well today
