What kind of keyboards were used in Shannons "Give me the night"

Psst, it's "Give Me Tonight"

I love this song, so this should be fun -

I think it's safe to say that all the synth sounds except the orchestra hits, some vocal sounds, and bells toward the end are analog, but it's all very compressed with heavy reverb into that glossy-80's wall of sound. Actually, the bells toward the end sound like an early digital synth, maybe a Roland D-50. The heavily filtered/reverbed chirpy sound at the intro might just be a Roland JX3P or MKS-30. In fact, there's another stab sound with a heavy chorus that also resembles the MKS/AlphaJuno/JX era of Roland. Just about everything is polyphonic at some point. I couldn't tell you about the bass, it's pretty ordinary-sounding, though it sounds as if it might be a polyphonic synth in unison mode. The drums are clearly digital, heavily compressed, and blasted through the standard pop-freestyle reverb along with everything else. I'm almost positive it's an Oberheim DMX, but that might be an 808 rimshot in there, too. Obviously the "give me tonight" solo is an early sampler.

Basically, if you're looking for these kinds of sounds, think MKS-30, MKS-50, Alpha Juno-1 or 2, maybe Juno 106. I love the built-in chorus/ensemble effects on these, and this song makes great use of them. It must have been quite a feat of engineering to get all these sounds smashed together.

Startrekman, I think you've found your saviour.

So this would appear to be the second best Shannon track out there. It's great. I think the voice sounds quite masculine at times (at least in a male voice singing quite high e.g. Jermaine Jackson) and this is compounded by Shannon seemingly singing from the man in the song's perspective at least in the chorus.

You can get the acapella of this on iTunes I noticed. It was brought to my attention how great this track this by frenchbloke's mix of it with Justus Koehncke's 'Was Ist Musik' on his 'Back With A Big Fuck You' mix.

"Thanks to You" is better. :P

Better than "Let The Music Play" in my book - dynamic, sweeping, as avant-garde as '84 pop got, and I still hold it up as a textbook example to those who think "Jenny On The Block" is all that. Went straight in the chart at 24, whereupon Phonogram stupidly forgot to press enough copies, and it dived out again. Should have been a number one instead of sodding "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go."

'Waiting For Tonight' probably warrants more of a worthwhile comparison with this than 'Jenny From The Block' but point taken anyway.

I agree with Marcello (except about Wham!). The record is pushier, more urgent – almost hysterical – than "Let the Music Play."

The great thing about growing up in Miami in the mid '80s is that you heard this song and its facsimilies ALL THE TIME.

Could this be the song where rock, pop, hip-hop and dance people finally come together and lay down their arms and play a game of football on Christmas Day?

(Thank you ILM, by the way, for reminding me of this gem.)
