C/D: The Partridge Family

The theme song came into my mind this morning and I realized that I always liked the song. Many things nice about it. The refrain is vaguely gospel-like and the use of different words each time works great. The verse has a nice harmonic progression and is beautifully succinct.

All in all, I don't know if they had a lot of great material. The only Partridge Family record I have is a 45 of "I Woke up in Love This Morning," which is a very nice song. I'm not crazy about their big hit "I Think I Love You," but looking at track listings on compilation albums, I'm remembering liking songs such as "Doesn't Somebody Want to Be Wanted" and "Summer Days."

Please post thoughts, plus fab facts, pics, etc.

Among the earliest pop albums I ever owned. I was 8, you had to.
"I Woke up in Love This Morning," "I Think I Love You," "Doesn't Somebody Want to Be Wanted," all extremely memorable for that reason.

I still like "I'll Meet You Half Way," which effotlessly conjures images up images of my childhood when i hear it.

I can never bring myself to hate pop-rock this unpretentious and first-generation bubblegummy. (Well, except for those Brady Bunch records; those were gawdawful.) Altho they didn't rock as hard as some of the (truly amazing) Osmonds hits of the era, "I Woke Up In Love" and the other biggies are mostly pretty good; and Sonic Youth even ripped off "I Think I Love You" for "Drunken Butterfly." (And tho I can't recall the show itself too well, I know that the guy who played Reuben Kincaid even hailed from my honourary hometown of Sarnia, Ontario!)

I went through an "I love you laurie partridge" spell in high school when the show was running at 11 am on some channel...and since then wake up with "i woke up in love" stuck in my head from time to time.

These songs are good, though, Gygaxor.

"Point Me in the Direction of Albuquerque" is pretty creepy - the singer takes advantage of a disoriented, vulnerable runaway ("crazy little ragdoll"), copping a feel and kissing her, before directing her to the bus station.

The liners on one of the Rev-Ola reissues (forget which one) mentioned a connection between the PF songwriting team and the late '60s LA soft-pop crowd (Curt Boettcher et al, though I don't think Boettcher was personally involved).

I remember the first PF album (the red cover) being better-than-you'd-expect. . .

I think they're fabulous.

"It's One of Those Nights" is #1.

Kismet. It was Piet Mondrian's birthday yesterday, so I showed my class some of his art off YouTube this morning (a day late). Later, as part of a media assignment where they compare sitcoms across eras, we watched an episode of The Partidge Family (season one, episode eight, where "I Think I Love You" debuts). That's when I realized that Mondrian designed the family bus.

We watched episode #16 today, "My Son, the Feminist." You've got to see this! (If you're a relatively well-adjusted adult, you can eliminate that exclamation mark.) Keith is dating a girl who belongs to P.O.W., a militant feminist group, and he volunteers the band to play at one of their rallies. Just before the show, they have an argument because the girl objects to some of the song titles she sees on the playlist--songs about love just serve the man's interest. Can't play them, she tells Keith. He strikes back:

"Look, Tina--you're working for a cause, and that's great. But nobody--nobody--censors our material."

A couple of my girls spotted me laughing heartily at the back of the room, looking puzzled as to why.

saw him fairly recently at an outdoor freebie in the park and he was refreshingly honest in his interaction with the audience. he seemed like a nice but messed up guy.

:(

Was very much on team David in 1972, aged 7 (my older sister was on team Donny I think). He was so beautiful. Later I caught up with the first three Bell Records LPs; all are solid. I read somewhere that he was also just about the only person who gave a damn about the song content of the last three or four PF albums.

RIP
