..and you can include Antioch Arrow, Swing Kids, Angel Hair, and other somewhat gothed out hardcore bands from the late 80s and early 90s in discussion, too. Will the style still rule the roost in the next decade or so?

Brian MacDonald, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

does it still rule the roost now?

search heroin's discography cd, containing the best hardcore (punk) record of the 90s. (followed closely by born against's patriotic hymns for children.

search -everything- on gravity records, but esp. the first antioch arrow 12", the angel hair discography CD, the mighty clikitat ikatowi's live CD, the VSS's nervous circuits, the born against/universal order of armageddon split 7", the uoa dub 12", the men's recovery project 7".

non-gravity: the universal order of armageddon and great unravelling 12"s on kill rock stars, i guess early unwound counts here, the monorchid, the first rye coalition album.

destroy: humorless/style-less political hardcore inna ebullition stylee, former spazz-core bands copping bowie moves (the rapture, get hustle, etc.), the locust and all who sail her stillborn waters.

jess, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

You can ignore Jess' suggestion to ignore stuff like The Locust & The Rapture. He's talking crazy. (If he's including Propoghandi in that humorless political sandbag, he's talking more crazy. If Mr. Darnielle is around, though, he should be the one to step up & defend, if such besmirchment is afoot.)

If you're going to include the Monorchid, you have to include Skull Control, yes? And, for a history lesson, the Screamers 2 CD retrospective (and Synthpunk.com) might be worth your while.

David Raposa, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i really have nothing else to add here except my condolences I couldn't have chimed in early to agree with most of Jess' sentiment and David's rebuttal. Really, quite comprehensive in a few posts. And also, thank Brian for making this a top-level (did you see my post on the "heroin" (the song) thread?)

http://gygax.pitas.com, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Whoa, there. I know nothing about this stuff, and it sounds like it might be interesting. Any chance of a bit more of a detailed description?

RickyT, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

heroin: the bridgehead between old skool hardcore and screamo? aided by a whipfast rhythm section and a guitar sound like a piece of sheet metal being rippled in a gust of wind. good screamer too.

antioch arrow: the birthday party on 78 rpm? really, really fast (but not speed metal fast) spastic hardcore. supposedly there's a keyboard buried in the mix somewhere as well. damned if i can hear it.

angel hair: bauhaus x die kruezen + celtic frost? again, spasmotron hardcore with the best screamer of the 90s. mutated into...

the vss: a hardcore version of p.i.l.? an even more unhinged/compacted jesus lizard? noo wave terror. amped up gothic-y keyboard bits meets pile drive rock. best of the lot in my opinion.

clikitat ikatowi: the BEST hardcore/punk drummer i've ever heard. when i was in college and looking to form a band, i played the opening track on the live album for a friend/drummer. he just sorta shook his head "there's no way i can play that fast and intricate dude." we're not talking prog here. it's got a lot more HEFT. the guitars have a trebly, skeletal wipers-thing going on. sounds like it was recorded in a wind tunnel and all the better for it. only hardcore record to feature harmonica?

monorchid: stop-start neo-post punk. twin guitarists in the best roland howard/mick harvey tradition. chris thomson sounds like mark e. smith after an eight hour pixie stick binge.

born against: occasionally brilliant, occasionally atrocious political hardcore romper room rumpus.

there were other bands to record in and around the gravity axis (evergreen = limp indie rock, physics = tangerine dream, three mile pilot = occasionally brilliant dark rock and roll, huggy bear = well, you know), but these represent the best of the dark, seedy grind they got going at their best.

Actually, Joey Karam, the Locust's keyboardist, had a role in helping to popularize a lot of this type of music -- at least at a local level. He took over and booked at the all ages Huntington Beach Library in Orange County for a short while (1995 to 1997 I think), and basically put together these amazing shows featuring all of the above bands at one point or another, such that even the kids down in San Diego would drive up and see them. (I saw the very first Locust show with Joey, and also the first as "The Locust", which prompted a really bitter speech by J.P. about the legal threats from the UK Locust) Anyway, it was certainly an influence in my decision to help promote show a month at Koo's cafe in Santa Ana for the year of 2000.

Joey also used to do a well acclaimed radio show after mine on KUCI during his booking days. So, yeah, he's always been a mover and shaker, and it's nice to see The Locust getting some recognition.

Brian MacDonald, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

...only hardcore record to feature harmonica?

If Young Pioneers count as "hardcore" (I'm not sure they do, I'm not sure Clikitat Ikatowi does either), then there's another band with records featuring harmonica.

jess is right about this: born against's 9 patriotic hymns for children is a great album. most of the other stuff in the thread was always a bit too goth for me personally.

g, Wednesday, 9 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I thought the Hated were kinda cool.

Colin Meeder, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I became aware of this stuff in the mid-90s. I haven't really gone far enough into the earlier stuff. I wasn't a diehard fan, and I didn't really have much record-spending money at the time, but it was a big part of the backdrop for a year of my life. Ottawa was a somewhat happening place as this stuff goes. Okara and Shotmaker were the biggest bands in the scene. Okara's Months Like Years features post-Levene guitars over a nimble ridiculously mathy proggy rhythm section with prepubescent howls. Shotmaker were more of a straightforward rocking hardcore band. I don't play any of it a lot now. I do of course rate Native Nod's "Tangled" single but the Lapse sucked when I saw them. I thought Camera Obscura (featuring former members of Swing Kids and Shortwave Channel) and Black Cat 13 were excellent when I saw them in the summer of 2000, especially the former, who achieved a dense noise sometimes reminiscent of Swans. On record they were a bit of a disappointment but I did get some mileage out of To Change the Shape Of An Envelope for a while. Black Cat were a bit more in a Locust vein. I have a Locust CD, which I played a bit in the summer. Kid606 probably does the spazz-noise thing better to be honest. Swing Kids were pretty good IIRC and did the only worthwhile Joy Division cover I've heard. Anyone remember Policy of 3? (I'm not completely sure which bands should count in this category.) Do the 1.6 Band count? I'm sure at some point I'll get massively nostalgic for the atmosphere of 1995/6 and buy all the records I didn't hear the first time around.

sundar subramanian, Saturday, 12 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Colin, were the Hated ever a "gothed out hardcore band"? Are there going to be Cure & Bauhaus covers on that oft-rumored retrospective? Is this going to CHANGE the face of "emo" forevah?

David Raposa, Sunday, 13 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Well, almost all of our songs were secretly about elves. Does that count?

Colin Meeder, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

But seriously: Listen carefully, and you hear the New Order and Joy Division rip-offs, especially in the earliest stuff.

Colin Meeder, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Now, see, you're assuming that I have heard the Hated, which I have not. (Except for that single on Troubleman, that is, which isn't really the Hated, is it?)

The only thing keeping me from buying most of the records mentioned on this thread is credit card fear.

David Raposa, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Speaking of Ottawa, wasn't there a band called Ottawa? I remember Joey used to play this song by Ottawa all the time which had a hilarious sampled intro of this metal guy beckoning this sinister in- between-song live dialog.

As for sampling metal band live dialog, the clear winner is, of course, Charles Bronson's classic "Live in Fucking Belgium".

Brian MacDonald, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Gravity records in San Diego still has copies of the first twofer CD available. I don't know if Amalgamated still prints their third album (the more goth) "Gems of Masochism", though...

Brian MacDonald, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Isn't there a Venom live album(s) where they do Ned's schtick for EVERY SINGLE SONG?

David Raposa, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

They might, but the legendary bit I heard came courtesy of Celebrities At Their Worst, with nothing but the schtick on the cut. All the songs were edited out so only the briefest of introductions and conclusions were heard. This actually had the salutory advantage of making Venom sound they were putting first album Wire to shame in terms of brute brevity -- too bad they weren't really like that.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

In fact, I'm convinced that the Gerogerigegege's "Tokyo Anal Dynamite" is their/his interpretation of such a montage of live Venom minus song bodies.

Hey, even though they are not really of the gothed out hardcore genre, what do you guys think of Crom Tech. In my opinion Mick is one of the most innovative guitar players in "hardcore" and no one else has ever been so intricate. Another band that is pushing the limits is Vaz. It's ex-members of Hammerhead and they have some very interesting guitar and drum work.

in san diego emo circles:
1st wave = 89-92
2nd wave = 93-95

"leave" is the best heroin song.

three mile pilot, rftc, drive like jehu were always "indie rock", never "emo" (ie, they didn't play the che cafe every thursday).

heavy vegetable did play the TGs though.

yeah the studio recordings of those clikitat songs sound like a pick-up band playing them. (also, shitty recording.) that live album is nicely atmopheric (lots of space which is an underrated virtue with this sort of thing), and the drumming on, say, "8 hours of drama", doesn't sound like popcorn popping.

As i just pointed out, Three One G just reissued "Gems of Masochism", and I think Gravity still presses the other Antioch Arrow records.. in fact, they recently repressed a good chunk of their catalog, me thinks.

Actually, my favorite Antioch Arrow song is "Paper Moshay" off "Gems"... they're still the only band to properly fuse the Rozz Williams-over-Rock-Chaos thing very well on that record.. if only the rest of the album was like that, but still, yeah, great record. The earlier ones are powerhouses but get a bit grating and samey after a while, whereas i'm more likely to listen to "Gems" time after time.

Don't know what Tonie's up to and don't care, really. I don't think Vermin Scum is active -- doesn't matter, it's not like Tonie ever paid anybody or kept anything in print or even checked to make sure things were mastered at the right speed; he just stole the name and the checks while one of us was having substance problems. There are some differences (as to format, song selection, which takes to use) on the anthology, but everything is mixed and ready for the decisions to be (FINALLY) made. We've been stung by giving out tapes before, but truly devoted people should e-mail me.
