Cos I think they are really good.

Cheers.

and Madchester revival begins....... nnnnnnnnnnnnNOW.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 4 March 2005 17:31 (nineteen years ago) link

take a guess. i would much rather listen to Lo-Fis, Campag, Custom Blue, Regular Fries and about 20 other bands who did a similar but better sort of thing five or more years ago.

Sven Bastard (blueski), Friday, 4 March 2005 17:31 (nineteen years ago) link

I've never heard any of those bands. what I've heard of Kasabian seems nice enough. stupid band name tho (Manson is such a tired ref)

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 4 March 2005 17:34 (nineteen years ago) link

I think they've got a good sound.

Music seems better and better these days.

Zarr, Friday, 4 March 2005 17:47 (nineteen years ago) link

i found the album had a very short shelf life. so i side with the Bastard above - go discover : lo-fi allstars/campag/regular fries who all still get regular airing @ ireallylovemusic hq ..

mark e (mark e), Friday, 4 March 2005 17:49 (nineteen years ago) link

I would rather listen to nails being scraped down a blackboard.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 4 March 2005 17:57 (nineteen years ago) link

now that I think of it, ALL of these bands have terrible band names.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 4 March 2005 18:10 (nineteen years ago) link

have to question the naming of Custom Blue .. weren't they very smooth sounding .. kinda like a mo'wax era South-lite

mark e (mark e), Friday, 4 March 2005 18:20 (nineteen years ago) link

"Regular Fries"? Do I get a bic mac and a shake with that? fucking DUD.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 4 March 2005 18:21 (nineteen years ago) link

I think they've got a good sound.
Music seems better and better these days.

thats the problem, it's 'old' music. it's been done. and better

Rizz (Rizz), Friday, 4 March 2005 18:26 (nineteen years ago) link

i enjoy the disc quite a bit, even though i know its been done better before. i'll admit that it probably would have been a better 5 song EP than an entire album, but those 5 songs would be pretty killer.

jonviachicago, Friday, 4 March 2005 18:44 (nineteen years ago) link

They came through Toronto recently, and the press interviews were pathetic ... they kept going on about how they're the best thing ever, and "havin' it" on tour as a rock and roll band, etc. They had the Oasis 1994 Manual memorized.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 4 March 2005 18:45 (nineteen years ago) link

Kasabian sounds more like late-period Roses/Mondays to me. Maybe that's who Regular Fries et al were ripping off (I wouldn't know)...

The return of....

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 4 March 2005 19:11 (nineteen years ago) link

Regular fries is a great bandname!

At Risk supported Kasabian in Oxford, Dave says they are nice.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 4 March 2005 19:59 (nineteen years ago) link

The words "suck", "hippo" and "balls" spring to mind. Dreary retrogressive shite with no semblance of a tune, unless you count "Just". Raise your standards.

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Friday, 4 March 2005 20:04 (nineteen years ago) link

GAY SHITE, I SAY!

but seriously though, it's really nothing special is it?

Nic de Teardrop (Nicholas), Saturday, 5 March 2005 00:35 (nineteen years ago) link

Kasabian are not bad, have a few good songs, though the album as a whole not that good.
lo-fi allstars: I liked their first album a few years ago, but who can listen this now? terribly boring and long-long songs. half of them would have been enough.

zeus, Saturday, 5 March 2005 09:58 (nineteen years ago) link

Heard a couple of tracks of theirs today, and quite dug'em.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 19 March 2005 08:04 (nineteen years ago) link

shit

jmeister (jmeister), Saturday, 19 March 2005 08:10 (nineteen years ago) link

Rather than listen to some old stuff for the millionth time I played their album the other day and really liked it. The mix of dance and psychedelic rock elements felt organic and cohesive, not as collage-y as lot of things do these days.

But naming your band after one of Charlie Manson's henchwomen = DUD.

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Saturday, 19 March 2005 12:22 (nineteen years ago) link

I was convinced by mr. seward's voice review to give them a try and i'm glad i did so. rock.

charles, Saturday, 19 March 2005 16:53 (nineteen years ago) link

I know I will play this album fairly often, and return to it.

I was in a debate about buying this one or the Razorlight one.

The raz, I always enjoy seeing them play on TV, but on radio they sound more like Tom Petty.

i think the ILM opinion is that they're shit.

personally, i rather like them. if "empire" isn't in my top 20 songs of the year, i'll be surprised.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Saturday, 19 August 2006 22:30 (seventeen years ago) link

dude, someone claimed they were better than XTRMNTR?

wow.

They're one of those bands with one great song (Cutt Off) and a load of mediocre-to-unlistenable ones. At least they try and do something vaguely original with their SOUND, which evokes the dark, resigned apocalypse of a pulsating nightclub. Shame about the songwriting, though.

Scourage (Haberdager), Saturday, 19 August 2006 22:39 (seventeen years ago) link

apparently they think Keane are "a bunch of students". how fucking cool.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 19 August 2006 23:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Kasabian vs. Keane roughly equates to Kidderminster Harriers vs. Kettering Town, in my book.

Scourage (Haberdager), Saturday, 19 August 2006 23:25 (seventeen years ago) link

The sound of one mouth yawning.

Pier Paolo Semolina (noodle vague), Saturday, 19 August 2006 23:45 (seventeen years ago) link

"The sound of one youth morning" is actually a particularly apt way to describe Kasabian's music.

Scourage (Haberdager), Saturday, 19 August 2006 23:49 (seventeen years ago) link

i caught a clip of them there on C4's coverage of the V festival. they were as dull as buggery, which surprised me, 'cos the last time i saw footage of them live they appeared to be rocking quite impressively.

still, the crowd appeared to be, as it were, going wild.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Saturday, 19 August 2006 23:51 (seventeen years ago) link

the dark, resigned apocalypse of a pulsating nightclub

Come again?

jimnaseum - formalist rigour! (jimnaseum), Saturday, 19 August 2006 23:54 (seventeen years ago) link

You know when a club night becomes so oppressive and decadent that it honestly does seem like the world is ending, as your senses blur amidst a haze of carnal oblivion?

That is evoked perfectly the sound of Kasabian, and it is their strongest selling-point. Like I said, all they needed was a decent songwriter and a bit of variation and they'd have written a decent first album.

Scourage (Haberdager), Saturday, 19 August 2006 23:59 (seventeen years ago) link

all they needed was a decent songwriter ... and they'd have written a decent first album.

if my aunt had a dick she'd be my uncle.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Sunday, 20 August 2006 00:38 (seventeen years ago) link

I do like "Empire" a lot. I'd like it even more if it had Mark E Smith circa 1985 singing over the instrumental.

Clumsy Colin in ACTION BIKER (coach_mcguirk), Sunday, 20 August 2006 08:30 (seventeen years ago) link

They're weak Sy ripoff crap. Annoyingly a guy I know and like at work likes them and hates Sy, which is fuckin dumb

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 20 August 2006 09:23 (seventeen years ago) link

To be fair they have got one good tune. It's "Just".

Pier Paolo Semolina (noodle vague), Sunday, 20 August 2006 09:51 (seventeen years ago) link

some of the stuff on the kasabian self-titled is pretty, but it's an album that's 10 years too late

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Sunday, 20 August 2006 10:30 (seventeen years ago) link

i haven't heard the record - but they have an excruciatingly boring live show, I'll say that much

Stephen Bush (Stephen B.), Sunday, 20 August 2006 10:57 (seventeen years ago) link

I can imagine. As I keep saying, the record stands out for its production alone, and in a live setting this is of course mostly removed.

Scourage (Haberdager), Sunday, 20 August 2006 10:59 (seventeen years ago) link

I really like the fuzz bass sound in their new single and hate myself for it.

Tom Meighan is stepping down from Kasabian by mutual consent. Tom has struggled with personal issues that have affected his behaviour for quite some time and now wants to concentrate all his energies on getting his life back on track. We will not be commenting further.
