Sleepytime Gorilla Museum?

I may be alone in this one, but highly recommended...members (former or otherwise) of Idiot Flesh/Tin Hat Trio/Faun Fables/Moekestra!/etc. Fantastic live show, touring (but not here. Grrr...) with details on the unsuprisingly named sleepytimegorillamuseum.com (Now that's how you guarantee that your domian name is available...). Wondering if anyone else cares about them...

By the way, if you are intrigued, start with the most recent album "of natural history". First one is spotty IMHO, and the live album is only for the deeply devoted completists.

John Justen (johnjusten), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 03:12 (nineteen years ago) link

I heard "Of Natural History" and while they definitely are not a terrible band, they are very much not my thing.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 03:33 (nineteen years ago) link

my friend that lives in Oakland keeps telling me we need to go see them. i keep forgetting to go.

what's their deal again? black metal type shit?

JaXoN Hole (JasonD), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 03:35 (nineteen years ago) link

i really like sleepytime gorrila museum. their avant-garde nature and surprisingly good use of female vocals against rock music make for something unique amongst any collection.

yanomamö (lemike), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 04:44 (nineteen years ago) link

Imagine Magma and Meshuggah with Neubauten percussion set-up, lots of hand-made amplified stringed instruments, alternately weepy and asskicking prog - really unique vision, and yes, amazing live.

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 05:19 (nineteen years ago) link

I saw them live and thought they were fun. I don't think I'd like it as much on record, tho -- the spectacle and manic jumping troll-man were part of what I liked. As for Carla, I'd much rather listen to Tin Hat Trio.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 06:02 (nineteen years ago) link

i love em!~

charleston charge (chaki), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 08:11 (nineteen years ago) link

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum

was hoping the 2nd studio would be, I dunno, tighter than the first, rather than longer & more diffuse, but such is prog. I'll listen again.

Charming Hostess still my favorite out of any of their projects, they were peerless. Jewlia's reformed a new band but the original lineup, they knew it.

milton parker (Jon L), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 09:19 (nineteen years ago) link

Their latest album...

it's like the Grinch assembled the greatest math metal orchestra to back up his arias, and that of his mistress.

I love 'em. That press photo with the singer in the body of a dog... Holeee shit.

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 09:37 (nineteen years ago) link

took the new album to work today to check it out again... they're a good band

bassist co-worker stops by and said 'oh man this is what I was hoping Mars Volta would sound like' HA HA weird times

milton parker (Jon L), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:33 (nineteen years ago) link

then he said 'wow, they'd be a huge hit at ozzfest'

and he's RIGHT, someone get on this

milton parker (Jon L), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:34 (nineteen years ago) link

played with them here in Little Rock a couple of years ago. nice and genuinely strange troupe. they drove some sort of vintage (60s?) silver bluebird bus. had a boxing punch bag on board for keeping fit. went on a group jog (full attire!) up the street before the gig to warm up. quite a sight. and then they played! they know what they're doing. haven't listened to their albums, however.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:45 (nineteen years ago) link

Holy shit, Andrew? Tiny world.

I was just about to post about seeing them here a few years ago, and being surprised that they were musically pretty interesting, given how pretentious they looked. But they really went for it--so after they played, it didn't seem that pretentious after all. That one-in-a-thousand shows when "performance art" elements add something. The album was a bit of a downer--kind of sub-Art Bears/This Heat, but not bad. I'm actually curious wha they sound like now.

You guys were quite good that night. Did the four-person Rainy Day Regatta also play that night? Might've been another time at the Parlor.

The closest parallel I can think of is the Mr Bungle s/t (but MUCH artier than that) so perhaps that would be the best way to broach it with him? OH HI DERE

BLACK METAL IST KRIIIIIIIEEEEGGGGGGGGGGGG (acoleuthic), Thursday, 12 August 2010 16:59 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah GWA are kinda my answer to when battles started to get boring for me - SGM is on a whole different level tho - if i were to customize a song choice for you it would either be phthisis or hymn to the morning star

gg eileen (jjjusten), Thursday, 12 August 2010 17:01 (thirteen years ago) link

these guys are kind of great

the only link I hear so far to Mr Bungle is a similar timbre in the singer's voice

dude has a crazy low voice

How could you forget the crazy hooker? (HI DERE), Thursday, 12 August 2010 17:11 (thirteen years ago) link

it's not so much the sound as the vibe that puts Mr Bungle in mind - although as I say this is more uh 'intellectual'

going out now, back later for more wide-eyed rapture

BLACK METAL IST KRIIIIIIIEEEEGGGGGGGGGGGG (acoleuthic), Thursday, 12 August 2010 17:12 (thirteen years ago) link

hahaha yeah thought you might enjoy that

gg eileen (jjjusten), Thursday, 12 August 2010 17:17 (thirteen years ago) link

lol "Phthisis" sounds like a tame Pinkham art song arranged for rock band and violinist

How could you forget the crazy hooker? (HI DERE), Thursday, 12 August 2010 17:18 (thirteen years ago) link

this still has nothing to do with the Bungle aesthetic IMO

How could you forget the crazy hooker? (HI DERE), Thursday, 12 August 2010 17:20 (thirteen years ago) link

math-rock + classical music + sampling != genre collage + industrial

did you guys ever hear Radiation 4? same neighborhood musically, great band

gg eileen (jjjusten), Thursday, 12 August 2010 18:19 (thirteen years ago) link

ok this radiation 4 stuff is pretty O_O! in a good way!

gg eileen (jjjusten), Thursday, 12 August 2010 18:25 (thirteen years ago) link

ok hahaha one of the top results for a "radiation 4" search is some french hip hop collective, which made me think they had crossed the line of too quirky, but i stand corrected.

The radiation 4 stuff is more secret chiefs/bungley to me than SGMish tho

gg eileen (jjjusten), Thursday, 12 August 2010 18:29 (thirteen years ago) link

ok given that there are dudes selling the radiation 4 on amazon for like 50 cents, i think i should probably just go ahead and pick a copy up

Revive...?

Looks like a reunion is in the works. From their Kickstarter page launched about a week ago:

We, the John Kane Society, in partnership with the Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and associated acts, trusting in the stalwart spirit of mutual aid and emboldened by YOUR TUMESCENT ENTHUSIASM, have launched this Kickstarter on behalf of the Museum's imminent GRAND 2024 REOPENING.

It's time for SGM to BRING BACK THE APOCALYPSE just when the world needs it most! Namely, with a full-length studio album, a short film, select live appearances, and, once we meet our STRETCH GOAL of 100K...

A NATIONWIDE U.S. TOUR?!

i saw them last saturday, really good to see them again. i'm getting old, i nodded off during "sleep is wrong". not sure if that's based or cringe. also kayo dot opened for them, which i didn't know until i went home and looked up who that opening act was. they were ok, the sound mixing wasn't so great. the last song of theirs, which they said was one of their new ones, had this pretty cool "sheets of easter" feel to it, pretty long and cool.
