Robert Palmer's "Johnny & Mary": C or D?

I've loved this song ever since I got Addictions, Vol. 1 in 4th grade. I was just listening to Placebo's cover and I gotta admit this song only gets more fascinating with age. I can't believe Robert Palmer wrote it! I think for a while I've assumed it was a cover. There's a thread where mark s calls it 'the best song ever' and I gotta admit I forget to include it in such lists when asked. It deserves its own thread.

I've heard Placebo and the Notwist's covers. Haven't heard Tina Turner's, Twiggy's or the Status Quo's. Gonna try and google some info about the making of the song, etc. What y'all think of it?

CLASSIC. i gotta go download this. it's been years since i heard it...

Really great, I was in fact just hearing the Placebo cover yesterday! MINDMELD. (Be on the lookout for an FT piece, sorta.) The original I don't know as well as a live version he did, oddly enough.

Incredibly classic.

BlastsOfStatic (BlastsofStatic), Monday, 21 March 2005 20:05 (nineteen years ago) link

Classic, very, very classic. It might be the best song he ever wrote; I'd love to hear a cover with guitar-bass-drums. I didn't think the guy was capable of subtlety until I heard this and "You Are in My System" (less classic, still enjoyable).

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 21 March 2005 20:05 (nineteen years ago) link

I can't believe Robert Palmer wrote it!
I didn't even realize it was him singing for a long time, when I would hear it on the radio when it first came out. Cer-lassic!

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 21 March 2005 20:06 (nineteen years ago) link

I'd love to hear a cover with guitar-bass-drums

Er, well, that'd be Placebo for you then.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 March 2005 20:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Great song, as is Notwist's cover. But I think that back in nu(man) wave days, I actually like "Looking for Clues" (off the same album), more -- it's maybe not as pretty, but it's catchier and bouncier.

xhuxk, Monday, 21 March 2005 20:07 (nineteen years ago) link

i dunno if the lyric would benefit from more 'bounce'

Absolutely frigging classic. I used to play this ALL the time on the radio. It just makes me so happy. I can't remember if it's as *revved* up as I remember it to be.

nathalie barefoot in the head (stevie nixed), Monday, 21 March 2005 20:09 (nineteen years ago) link

"Looking For Clues" is great too, though. That's also on Addictions

miccio (miccio), Monday, 21 March 2005 20:09 (nineteen years ago) link

"Young Turks" totally ripped the pulse off, didn't it? Not a complaint, more people should have!

miccio (miccio), Monday, 21 March 2005 20:11 (nineteen years ago) link

Palmer says in "Addictions" that HIS cover of "Some Guys Had All The Luck" precedes Rod's! (I still prefer Rod's).

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 21 March 2005 20:13 (nineteen years ago) link

oh yeah and Rod thanks Robert for finding 'My Heart Can't Tell You No' in the liners to Out Of Order! Curious what there relationship was like, cuz Rod was yanking his shit all the time! I love both versions of "Some Guys" but I prefer Robert's cuz the vocal is juicier and schizo.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 21 March 2005 20:15 (nineteen years ago) link

another good palmer song = "riptide"

mark s (mark s), Monday, 21 March 2005 20:16 (nineteen years ago) link

That's right! Power Station/Out Of Order connection!

I really need to get digital copies of these tracks. I lost the liner notes to Addictions almost 15 years ago!

miccio (miccio), Monday, 21 March 2005 20:16 (nineteen years ago) link

How IS "Out of Order"? It was his biggest 80's album.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 21 March 2005 20:19 (nineteen years ago) link

by the way, I have a special affection for Palmer; "Heavy Nova" was one of my first "adult" purchases in 9th grade. It's totally unlistenable now, as is "Riptide," but I'll always love him for the Power Station album and the singles on "Addictions."

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 21 March 2005 20:20 (nineteen years ago) link

CLASSIC. A dark, dark song. I remember the clip too - pop noir.

moley, Monday, 21 March 2005 20:21 (nineteen years ago) link

>i dunno if the lyric would benefit from more 'bounce' <

Never said it would (though actually, I don't think I have much idea what the lyric is about -- except, um, people named Johnny and Mary. Though maybe if I went back and listend to the thing, I'd remember.)

I do remember some writer in *NY Rocker* once saying he (the writer) collected versions of "Some Guys Have All The Luck". (He was reviewing one by a reggae singer named Junior Tucker or somebody.)

xhuxk, Monday, 21 March 2005 20:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Out Of Order has great singles and the video edit of "Crazy About Her" replaces his absurd shrieking with another chorus, but if there's some comp with all the hits yer fine.

man these lyrics are HARSH

Johnny’s always running around
Trying to find certainty
He needs all the world to confirm
That he ain’t lonely
Mary counts the walls
Knows he tires easily

Johnny thinks the world would be right
If it could buy truth from him
Mary says he changes his mind more than a woman
But she made her bed
Even when the chance was slim

Johnny says he’s willing to learn
When he decides he’s a fool
Johnny says he’ll live anywhere
When he earns to time
Mary combs her hair
Says she should be used to it
Mary always hedges her bets
She never knows what to think
She says that he still acts
Like he is being discovered
Scared that he’ll be caught
Without a second thought
Running around

Johnny feels he’s wasting his breath
Trying to talk sense to her
Mary says he’s lacking a real
Sense of proportion
So she combs her hair
Knows he tires easily

Johnny’s always running around
Trying to find certainty
He needs all the world to confirm
That he ain’t lonely
Mary counts the walls
Says she should be used to it

Johnny’s always running around
Running around

miccio (miccio), Monday, 21 March 2005 20:22 (nineteen years ago) link

And I love the sad, resigned way he sings "Mary climbs the walls."

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 21 March 2005 20:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Funny, I love the melody, which is sad indeed, but I don't think Palmer's (or the Notwist guy's) singing really puts over those words -- honestly, I've heard the song scores of times, and the words never really grabbed me. (Which didn't make the song feel any less sad.)

xhuxk, Monday, 21 March 2005 20:30 (nineteen years ago) link

I'd...have to agree with Chuck there, actually. It was the performance overall that caught the sense of it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 March 2005 20:33 (nineteen years ago) link

The performance is the key depressant factor. It presents the situation as factual, not one person's opinion.

Argh God it's so bleak. And it's not got a chorus, as if to emphasise that the relationship isn't going to go anywhere. Re the delivery: it is calm and measured as Palmer is a detached observer. In the clip, he's actually writing it down on a typewriter - he may be an author.

moley, Monday, 21 March 2005 20:35 (nineteen years ago) link

Well, if you listen to the last time he sings "Mary climbs the walls," his voice goes slightly higher, as if to emphasize what a bum rap she's had in life.

OTM Moley.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 21 March 2005 20:38 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh yeah I think it's 'Mary counts the walls', not 'climbs the walls'. I the clip that's what the Mary character is doing. That's an important distinction as Mary is resigned, not frustrated or angry - she's sort of passing the time, waiting for something to happen, like someone in prison marking the days.

moley, Monday, 21 March 2005 20:46 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah but his voice does climb the wall (pitchwise) as he sings that line (which I do remember, but again, not so much for its words).

xhuxk, Monday, 21 March 2005 20:52 (nineteen years ago) link

It's not exactly emo, is it, that song? It's a lesson in emotional understatement.

moley, Monday, 21 March 2005 20:54 (nineteen years ago) link

He gets a bad rap. I have soft spots for Secrets, Clues and (the very weird) Pride. His covers are mostly excellent (Cherrelle, System, Gary Numan, Rundgren, Gap Band, but not Kool & the Gang [real flimsy]). Plus you are instantly great if you have ever associated with Wally Badarou.

Andy K. (ADK), Monday, 21 March 2005 21:36 (nineteen years ago) link

When I was 18 this was my favorite song, but I couldn't find a copy of Looking for Clues to save my life. I fell in love with someone because she bought me the album on cassette. Then she cheated on me with a drug dealer, but I didn't really care all that much, because I had Looking for Clues on cassette and, therefore, "Johnny and Mary.'

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Monday, 21 March 2005 21:43 (nineteen years ago) link

I understood almost none of the lyrics except for pretty much the first half of the first line. I heard it thusly: "Johnny's always running around trying to find (rest of song unintelligible until) Mary takes his hand" I figured it was about a little boy behaving badly (Little Johnny?) whose older sister Mary has to keep him out of trouble.

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 21 March 2005 21:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Matt, she probably thought you should be used to it.

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 21 March 2005 21:48 (nineteen years ago) link

So, who was Johnny in the relationship, Matt?

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 21 March 2005 21:48 (nineteen years ago) link

Is the album really that hard to find? Wow. I have it on vinyl, but I swear I see it in dollar bins fairly often. (In fact, I only bought my copy a couple years ago -- used to only own "Looking for Clues" on a 45, I think.) I had no idea the album was even rare....

xhuxk, Monday, 21 March 2005 21:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Well, this was 1984, so it wasn't all that common in cutout bins...but that's where she found it, alright!

Hey, Ken L and Alfred: ha ha to you both.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Monday, 21 March 2005 21:55 (nineteen years ago) link

I never really paid much attention to the lyrics before, but now as I read it, it sounds like a story of sexual dysfunction. The continuing story from "Band of Gold," I'm thinking.

Anyway, I like "You Overwhelm Me" a whole lot better.

It's worth noting that Palmer was spending a good amount of time recording with Gary Numan and Adrian Belew at the time, which had an obvious effect.

His version of Numan's "I Dream of Wires" has a similar detached feel.

Stone cold classic.

I borrowed this album from my father on a lark; he'd been trying to get me to listen to Power Station and I think I grabbed this instead. It blew me away, and I tracked down a copy online (which, unfortunately, has a lot of cold stops, so it's not great for mixes). My girlfriend fell in love with it, and on a trip to some library conference at Southern Illinois, ditched out on her boring crew and made it to some used record store where she found the album and bought it for a dollar. At the same time, I was buying it at Record Surplus here in LA for a dollar. It's by far my favorite track of his, and my favorite album of his (and I agree that the Numan cover is better than the original).

Always loved Johnny and Mary. It's one of those songs where every instrument arrives quietly, in its own time, and slots into place perfectly. The little rock guitar riff that barely announces itself in the middle of the second verse, the shiny synth that comes in a few bars later, with that motorik-esque beat running underneath the whole time. Flawless.

is this a gag or... (it's when not then)

I heard it as “then,” looked it up and saw “when.” Listened again a few more times, still leaned towards “then.” Probably it really is “when,” that makes more mundane logical sense. But to me “then” would make for a better lyric, packs more emotional punch, is almost a Dylanism.
