Thurston Moore, Psychic Hearts
Pavement, Wowee Zowee

xpost: that's a six-sided album

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 20:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, three-SIDED albums, not 3-DISC albums.

A three-sided album is a double album where side 4 is as blank as my mind on a Sunday morning.

Pinball FREAK, Tuesday, 12 April 2005 20:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Extreme, "3 Sides to Every Story" -- it was promoted as a three-sided album even though it came out in the CD era. It can now be found in a bargain bin near you.

Rasaan Roland Kirk- The Case of the 3 Sided Dream in Audio Color

One of Monty Python's LPs was one disc with a double groove on one side, giving three "sides."

And the Yes L.A. compilation was a one-sided LP.

Rock City Angels - Young Man's Blues (debut album) (okay, well, fourth side is a "dance remix" of one of the songs on the other sides.)

Wasn't there an early Graham Parker album like that, too -- The Parkerilla or something, with a 12-inch single of Don't Ask Me Questions on side 4?

Funkadelic One Nation Under a Groove came with a 7-inch inside that was CALLED Side C, but I don't know if that counts, either.

Also, I have an M "Pop Muzik" single which is a 3-sided single -- on one side, there are two different concentric grooves, so depending on where you put the needle down, it plays either Pop Muzik or M Factor.

Matching Tie and Handkerchief. I have another album that has parallel grooves so you get something different depending on where you drop the needle. I can't remember what it is though.

The fourth side consisted of studio recordings, released as the 3X3 EP. Btw. the US edition of the album was in fact four sides of live material.

Didn't Richie Havens have a famous 3 sided album? perhaps even the first?

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 00:56 (nineteen years ago) link

I vaguely remember my dad talking about a 3sided album by Havens with grooves on only 1 side of the second album, but i could be wrong...

That Johnny Winter and Rock City Angels were the only ones I knew of. But the "Thank God It's Friday" soundtrack LP had five sides. 3LPs, sixth side blank.

I was still a pretty big Extreme fan when that came out (granted I was maybe 12). I think it had "Get The Funk Out" on it which was an alright jam.

Nirvana "From the muddy banks of the Wishka" had three sides.

Side 4 was snippets of 'between song' nonsense a la "Having Fun with Elvis on-stage"

Super Furry Animals' Phantom Power is a three-sided LP with an etching on side 4.

I think Boards of Canada's Geogaddi is a five-sided LP, with an etching on side 6. How about that? Any more five-sided albums?

Jesse, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 12:23 (nineteen years ago) link

Side 6 is Magic Window, isn't it? That track is silence anyway, so it's a moot point.

Deluxe (Damian), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 12:23 (nineteen years ago) link

OT: I remember fondly a one-sided 7" by a band called Lint circa 1995 or so. Hot tune.

I never play the ballad half of Donna Summer's "Hot Stuff." Thus, three sides of primo Donna remain.

ryko's "audiophile" reissued Bowie's catalog in the early '90s came on three-sided colour vinyl: Space Oddity, Hunky Dory, The Man Who Sold The World. The third side contained the bonus tracks that appeared on the CDs.

The vinyl of Air Miami's album is (I think) three 45 rpm sides.

Vox Pop, *The Band, the Myth, the Volume* (Goldar 12-inch EP, 1982). "C side", I wrote once, "lands you inside an eternal closed groove."

six years pass...

I wish more labels would consider doing these instead of spreading 52 minutes of music across four sides.

Mark, Sunday, 8 May 2011 22:23 (twelve years ago) link

I think it's more a mastering/sound quality concern than any label's conscious artistic decision but i could be wrong.

I think it's more a mastering/sound quality concern than any label's conscious artistic decision but i could be wrong

yeah but there isn't going to be any noticeable difference in sound quality between a side of music lasting 13 mins and one lasting 17 mins.

a couple of examples I can think of:

Coil, Musick to Play in the Dark vol. 2 – has a v. nice etching on side 4
Death in June, Something is Coming

also I'm pretty sure I have a Nurse With Wound LP like this w/etching on side 4 but I can't remember which one
