Do any blacks like The Doors?

I was getting the thrid degree from a record store sales buddy the other day over my indifference towards Steely Dan. "Black people can listen to that music," he said, before ribbing me for my tolerance of Jim Morrison, "No black people at all ever listen to The Doors... ever!"
Was he speaking the truth?

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Friday, 20 May 2005 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Did this buddy of yours have a 'property of N. Hornby' stamped on his head?

"blacks"

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 20 May 2005 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

TV On The Radio have that one song that implies a fondness.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 20 May 2005 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Why does black people never want to rock?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 20 May 2005 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, well a whole bunch of different people covered 'Light My Fire' if that helps.

Always wondered what Arthur Lee thought of Jim Morrison.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 20 May 2005 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

They moved their shows to a more fashionable club, "Whiskey a Go Go", and it was there that "Love" band member Arthur Lee convinced Jac Holzman of Elektra Records to sign them up.

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Friday, 20 May 2005 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

There's some truth to this. Steely Dan does cross the line far more often than The Doors ever have.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Friday, 20 May 2005 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

ahem....

Greg Tate and Vernon Reid have a dialogue piece in Everything But The Burden called "What Steely Dan Has To Say To The Black Man" or something.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 20 May 2005 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the Doors and so does my dad. And we're pretty brown last time I checked.

"Black people can listen to that music," he said, before ribbing me for my tolerance of Jim Morrison, "No black people at all ever listen to The Doors... ever!"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 20 May 2005 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

...point?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 20 May 2005 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

blahbariantheoriginal, Friday, 20 May 2005 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

what point were you trying to make with cover connections?

My answer would be that originality is in short supply. And I didn't start the first ever Cover Connections thread, so whomever did might have a different answer for you.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 20 May 2005 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

it's possible he was trying to compliment their distate for honky bullshit

miccio (miccio), Friday, 20 May 2005 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

With the arguable exception of "Peace Frog", it's pretty true that the Doors were greatly lacking in the funk department, if that lends the concept any creedence.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 20 May 2005 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

...begging the question....Do any blacks like Creedence?

::bad joke::

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 20 May 2005 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

(x-post)
alex, i was joking.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Friday, 20 May 2005 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

distaste, I mean. gah, I thinking about the fact that Greg Tate probably loves the Doors and there you go.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 20 May 2005 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I know. I ain't mad at'cha.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 20 May 2005 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I got in trouble for asking this very same question on another thread, but here I go again. Regarding whether or not Africa-American music fans appreciate the music of The Doors.....

Does it matter?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 20 May 2005 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

No one should like the Doors.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 20 May 2005 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

blahbariantheoriginal, Friday, 20 May 2005 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually read this yesterday:

2004 Associated Newspapers Ltd.
DAILY MAIL (London)

June 19, 2004

It was on his film course that Morrison met fellow student Ray Manzarek, a pianist who wanted to form a rock band. Morrison, with his dangerous charisma, now fuelled by daily doses of LSD, seemed like the ideal front man.

Manzarek introduced him to the drummer he'd recruited, John Densmore. The serious, sensitive Densmore was so scared of the new arrival that he developed a skin rash on his legs that went only when Morrison died.

On one early outing, he dropped the singer at the apartment of an attractive female student and went off to fetch some apple juice.

When he returned, he found Morrison twisting the girl's arm behind her back, whispering violent threats in her ear while popping open the buttons of her blouse with a carving knife.

'Just having a little fun,' Morrison smirked, releasing the girl's arm.

Densmore was left in shock, gripped by the thought: 'I'm in a band with a psychotic.' He asked the group's fourth recruit, guitarist Robbie Kreiger, if he thought Morrison was crazy.

'Yeah,' Krieger answered. 'He could also be a star. A big star. Don't the two go together sometimes?'

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Friday, 20 May 2005 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

The Doors had enough decent tracks that they could make a good "best of" comp, even though the albums sucked for the most part. They aren't even anywhere near the bottom.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 20 May 2005 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

speaking as a white, i dislike the doors.

Saint Etienne dont' like The Doors--does that count?

[About "People Get Real"]

This song is about Kenny Thomas, "a fake soul singer who used to be a boxer", apparently.
Trivia
The song was originally titled Kenny Get Real. It was going to be an a-side in itself, but Creation decided it wasn't commercial enough, so Join Our Club was recorded as well.
Here's the band talking about the track, shamelessly pinched from Melody Maker:

Bob:
It's about the way that when people stick to a certain kind of music, like acid jazz, or soul, they're considered "authentic" and real. People being really po-faced about stuff getting taken seriously, whereas, if you don't take yourselves too seriously, everyone takes that at face value and thinks you're superficial.

Like The Doors, who everyone thinks are great, but they're absolutely preposterous, total shit - and then you think of The Lovin' Spoonful, who were far more imaginative and wrote way more inventive songs, and they're regarded as some kind of comedy group! If you go for this ridiculous "authenticity" thing, you're allowed to get away with anything.

Pete:
That Jamiroquai song where he goes "sex-ee / lay-dee" - if we'd written that, we'd have been chased down the street!

Bob:
By sexy ladies. People would've come up to us and said, "I think I'm gonna squeeze ya."

mrjosh (mrjosh), Friday, 20 May 2005 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

c'mon, the Lovin Spoonful ARE a comedy group

I met a black guy who loved the Eagles once. Actually, I met him on a PATH train late at night, and he had his discman, with an Eagles CD in it, and out of nowhere he handed me his headphones and asked me whether I thought the song playing was Glen Frey or Don Henley.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 20 May 2005 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

That story isn't really relevant at all, and it doesn't even really matter that the guy was black -- I just think it's a funny story.

Acid rocker Jim Morrison died in Paris on July 3, 1971. Or did he? Tonight, A CURRENT AFFAIR investigates rumors that the Doors’ legend is still alive. In this exclusive story, we’ll travel from L.A. to San Francisco to the Pacific Northwest where Morrison allegedly lives today. We’ll talk with Doors’ insiders, including keyboardist Ray Manzarek, who shares his memories of the singer, who may – or may not – have died at the age of 27.

noizem duke (noize duke), Friday, 20 May 2005 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Lots of people like The Doors, some (but extremely far from most) of which are black.

Lots of people (black and white) are rather indifferent towards The Doors, one of which is me.

More interestingly, how many blacks like The Beatles? (and I am not speaking of their more stereotypically soulful numbers such as "Got To Get You Into My Life" here)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 21 May 2005 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

"how many blacks like The Beatles?"

2,564,908. Give or take a hundred.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Saturday, 21 May 2005 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

black people love "light my fire." nothing else needs to be said on this subject.

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Saturday, 21 May 2005 05:41 (twenty-one years ago)

"Crystal Ship"

jack cole (jackcole), Saturday, 21 May 2005 05:53 (twenty-one years ago)

From duke's link: 'After hearing their music, Burroughs decides that Steely Dan will never make it to the top of the rock pile. "These people are too fancy," he says. "They're too sophisticated, they're doing too many things at once in a song." He refers to the literary racket. "To write a bestseller, you can't have too much going on," he says. "You take The Godfather, the horse's head. That's great. But you can't have a horse's head on every page. These people tend to have too many horses' heads."'

Doors = 1/3 horses head

J.Grauerholz, Saturday, 21 May 2005 06:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Why the Doors? Aren't there groups that have a lot fewer black fans? I don't think they're that exclusive.

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Saturday, 21 May 2005 06:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Do any blacks like ELP?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 21 May 2005 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I bet Jethro Tull have fewer black fans. Just a hunch.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 21 May 2005 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently Babyface likes the Doors, as he was wearing a Doors shirt on American Idol. That's two strikes against him.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Thursday, 26 May 2005 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Just because several black artists covered "Light My Fire" doesn't mean that the Doors were big with African-Americans...hey, it was a popular song and everybody just rushed to get their version out on the market.

Rev. Hoodoo (Rev. Hoodoo), Thursday, 26 May 2005 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

jackie wilson's 'light my fire' is phenomenal

With the arguable exception of "Peace Frog", it's pretty true that the Doors were greatly lacking in the funk department, if that lends the concept any creedence.
They make up for it with their light understanding of jazz and their penchant for blues. Also, if Jim Morrison was still alive, he'd be some kind of weird rap-rocker by now.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Thursday, 26 May 2005 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno. I always wondered if Axl Rose was actually living out the life that Jim Morrison would have lived had he, you know, lived. (ie rises to the peaks of success, spends rest of life being slowly eaten alive by own ego etc). But then I think about a lot of strange things..

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 26 May 2005 03:23 (twenty-one years ago)

and as for the silly question that started this thread...
Yes. There always is.
Any question that is parsed "Does any $RANDOMETHNICGROUP like $RANDOMMUSICALACT ?" the answer is always Yes.
If you look hard enough, you can find a Rabbi who digs Guns and Roses, a Black Guy who likes Skrewdriver and a devout Catholic who digs Sinéad O'Connor.
Alright!?

I dunno. I always wondered if Axl Rose was actually living out the life that Jim Morrison would have lived had he, you know, lived. (ie rises to the peaks of success, spends rest of life being slowly eaten alive by own ego etc). But then I think about a lot of strange things..
I know that the cliché is that Jim Morrison would be a Fat-Elvis flavoured lounge singer if he were alive today, but I like being an optimist and assume he'd be more interesting. Even if it made for suckier music. Y'know, MC Snakerider on track and comin' at ya.
