Okay, sorry about that 'tisn't true but let's have a vote of those who think they should, only so as I can go wigout to Cha Cha 2000 et all in person rather than merely here in my room. They always reduce me to a blob of flaying arms with them drum patterns.

Yep 'We need better leaders'.

But Thomas Dinger isn't alive any more...

Pangolino 2, Saturday, 4 June 2005 06:09 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh. I didn't know that. Ah well back to jumping up and down in me room then. Tribute band anyone?

tolstoy (tolstoy), Saturday, 4 June 2005 07:44 (eighteen years ago) link

we've already got sunroof!, they're practically a tribute band.

As a Kruat tribute band you could do worse than get the ten inch by Prolapse related act Cha Cha 2000.

found a copy of the self-titled La Düsseldorf cd. says its remastered, on Warner Music Germany. Viva was there too but i remember not liking that one. when were these remasters released? also are the La! Neu? records any good?

amon (eman), Saturday, 13 August 2005 23:55 (eighteen years ago) link

la! nein.

amon (eman), Sunday, 14 August 2005 01:18 (eighteen years ago) link

are you kidding me? i prefer la! Neu?'s goldregen to anything i've heard under the la düsseldorf name...

nervous (cochere), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 03:43 (eighteen years ago) link

(which is all three albums by the way, but perhaps they just have yet to grow on me. Goldregen is much more accessible in that stripped-down, ambient piano washes a la "Leb Wohl" way)

nervous (cochere), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 10:55 (eighteen years ago) link

i was wrong about Viva obviously. its very krautpunky and i like it

I was browsing Forced Exposure and came across a La! Neu? double live disc from 1996 called Cha Cha 2000 that's apparently nothing but a one hour, forty-five minute long version of the track. La! Neu? beyond Gold Regen sucked for the most part, but that's just such an insane idea it might be quite good. Has anyone heard it? It's on Captain Tripp out of Japan, the same label that puts out the La! Neu? stuff, a lot of other live Krautrock, and Neu! 4 (though I can't find it anywhere online).

telephone thing, Sunday, 5 March 2006 04:36 (eighteen years ago) link

whatever you do, dont buy the one with the pink and yellow cover!

pssst - badass revolutionary art! (plsmith), Sunday, 5 March 2006 15:36 (eighteen years ago) link

What, Gold Regen? That's the one La! Neu? release I've enjoyed at all so far, Year of the Tiger is kind of boring noodly crap.

telephone thing, Sunday, 5 March 2006 15:46 (eighteen years ago) link

I would say the two hour jobbie is for fanatics only. It's pretty rough, shambolic and certainly aint sounding like the album version. Lots of mumbling by Dinger.

tolstoy (tolstoy), Sunday, 5 March 2006 21:42 (eighteen years ago) link

dude gold regen is awesome. definitely the only la! neu? i actually think is awesome, but i think it's VERY awesome

FACT: La Dusseldorf is the greatest album by any Krautrock band ever.

This is not my opinion but was in fact divined to me by a revelatory listen to Dusseldorf and Time earlier today. At College.

the La! Neu? cd "Zeeland" is A+

sexyDancer, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 18:37 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't know what this is. But I am sure that I will do my best to track it down only to be disappointed because nothing is as good as the all powerful La Dusseldorf.

I know, right?, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 18:40 (sixteen years ago) link

it's Dinger with new pals and female singer. Kinda like Spectrum meets 2nd wave Love Rock

sexyDancer, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 18:45 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, Zeeland is pretty good. Doesn't blow my mind, but not much does. I be demanding.

emil.y, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 19:03 (sixteen years ago) link

Dinger + anything really = Pure gold. Will track down. Thank you sexy dancer. Female singer though! I just realised in that post what a lads only club Krautrock was. Britpop bedamned!

I could listen to Cha Cha 2000 forever

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 20:43 (sixteen years ago) link

The two-disc live version goes all over the map from solo piano mood pieces, to thunderous percussion workouts, to long stretches of dead silence.

sexyDancer, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 20:50 (sixteen years ago) link

Ja, I know, not many women in Kraut. There's Gille Lettman and Rosi Muller that I can think of straight away. There must be some other obvious ones, though...

or should I say JA JA!

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 21:45 (sixteen years ago) link

That's true. None of the women were ever 'big names' though, in the way that Klaus Schulze or Dinger or ANY member of Can etc were. I guess I kind of think of Gille in that way, but that is very likely to just be me.

Get out of your car
And walk on your feet
And move body move
Life is more
Than just eat
And stop drinking hard
And smoking and doping
You better start thinking
And you better start working
Deep inside yourself
This
Will be paradise
If we open our heart
If we open our eyes
Come on
And make it paradise

I suppose you could make a case for Krautrock being all forward thrusting motion, hyper masculine, etc. But so much of it is so pretty.

That depends what you mean by Krautrock.

Wow. I can't stop staring at that last picture...

And thanks, y'all, for reminding me how awesome that 1st LD album is. Peeps always be repping Viva (which I love), but the 1st is closer to Neu! and nails a slightly different, tho' equally upbeat vibe. It really defines Germany in the mid 70s in my mind, so tied up with those early Wim Wenders films, Alice in the Cities and the like.

myopic_void, Thursday, 18 October 2007 10:57 (sixteen years ago) link

Tom's pic is nice.

That first one is "Supertramp meet two fans"

Renate Kroetenschawanz-Knaup is a pretty, uhhhhhhhhh, big name.

Wait, is this a joke about the length of the name? I automatically assumed that it was some sexist remark about the size of her boobs or something but now I see that it probably isn't. Let me know if it actually is so I can get all offended again. Cheers.

Also, I have the same problem with people choosing Viva over the first one. I mean, yeah 'White Overalls' etc, it's all groovy, but THIS IS THE BEST PIECE OF KRAUTROCK EVER RECORDED.

emil.y, Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:22 (sixteen years ago) link

It's a long name.

I don't really understand how anyone could find "Viva" better than the 1st album.

nine months pass...

Whenever I listen to LaDusseldorf, the overwhelming image in my head is of waves crashing, especially Dusseldorf it sounds like each wave comes crashing in drowns out the sound and pulls back to reveal it again. More tidal than motorik essentially.

I finally just got "Individeullos"and i am loving it just as much as the first two. the moment at the end of "menschen 2" where the motoric finally subsides revealing the shimmering guitar and synth drones washing below, What a unique excellent sound these guys had!

Not the impression you get when discovering them retrospectively in the 90s though.

Of course. Michael Rother solo was far more successful than Neu too.

Tom A. (Tom B.) (Tom C.) (Tom D.), Friday, 1 October 2010 10:07 (thirteen years ago) link

Was La Dusseldorf actually mainstream-popular in Germany? Never heard them mentionned apart from Neu geeks but wouldnt be suprised if they had charted at the time.

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 1 October 2010 10:11 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't know how the charts work in Germany but, yes, my copy of the first album has a sticker saying "Contains the hit single, 'Silver Cloud'". Also K. Dinger got annoyed with J. Cope for saying 'Silver Cloud' was their big hit because he said 'Rheinita' was a much bigger hit. As for M. Rother, "Flammende Herzen" (at least), sold a lot in Germany.

one year passes...

surprised there has not been one post on the La Neu! album Blue, which is basically the fifth La D album (Neondian was the fourth). it starts on a weird note but has some real moments of serene beauty ("Lilenthal" is pure bliss) and the extended, presumably live cut of "America" is the hardest they've ever rocked and could easily go on for even longer. I really can't understand why this wasn't released at the time it was recorded!
