From the liner notes:

From the liner notes: "In March of 1975, Tom (Recchion) and Harold (Shroeder) rented a studio in an old building on Colorado Blvd., and began working under the name "The Two Who Do Duets." "The Two" began with the purpose of establishing a common language of sounds and techniques which they could use to further explore their medium. In the fall of 1975, Juan (Gomez) was invited to join, thus creating the necessity to alter the name as it was now a trio. The old title was shortened to Doo Doo Ettes. In January of 1976, Dennis (Duck) joined and the quartet began preparing for its first live appearance, scheduled for January 30 above Poo-Bah record shop in Pasadena. They were joined by fellow members of the newly established Los Angeles Free Music Society: Le Forte Four and Ace and Deuce.
The concert proved to be a fairly successful first effort and, in February, L.A.F.M.S. began planning a second presentation for June. In the first part of that month, Fred (Nilsen), who had been playing informally with the Ettes for some time, became the fifth member and the quintet began composing and arranging material for the show. This is a record of the sound events which took place in the recital hall of the Brand Library on July 8, 1976.
"On July 8th, 1976, the Doo-Dooettes and Le Forte Four (as representatives of the L.A. Free Music Society) gave a performance at the Brand Art Center in Glendale, California. For their portion of the event, Le Forte Four tried to play back prerecorded tapes through 44 pyramid shaped headphones. Both the tapes and the headphones were specifically designed for the concert. The Doo-Dooettes played live."

the other one is called *Le Forte Four Le Forte Force: Bikini Tennis Shoes Bootleg*

Both are from 1977. I couldn't find a thread. Anyone heard them?

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 15 July 2005 17:05 (eighteen years ago) link

er, that should be Los ANGELES in the thread title.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 15 July 2005 17:09 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't know what exactly, but much of it was on a 10 CD wooden box set that came out in 96 or so.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 15 July 2005 17:35 (eighteen years ago) link

The LAFMS was a lightning rod for pre-punk & non-punk musical whatsis from all over the globe. This compilation deals primarily with the associations core members and their good works, but one of the LAFMS' prime functions was to transform itself (via "mere" extended activity) into a kind of magneto-art-sump for universal noise oddballs. Because it was physically locate-able, and copiously documented its members' gush, the LAFMS drew disaffected weirdos to its hub in the way that doughnuts attract fat cops. Its name became a kind of secret handshake that allowed culturally disenfranchised puds & pudettes to identify each other. Indeed, several of my closest friendships were cemented in the 70s w/ phrases like, "Oh, you know Le Forte Four?" -spoken w/ surprised delight while poking through a new acquantance's records.

In a way, the LAFMS bridged the years between the appearance of Meet the Residents in '74 and 1/2 Japanese's first EP in '77; linking the Euro-rooted sophistication of early '70s American experimentation to the insanely intuitive noise gushing that came about after punk unlocked the undergrounds id. The sound of Smegma was the exact kind of thing that every isolated suburban Beefheart fan imagined himself or herself producing in the company of true peers. The same could be said of Le Forte Four, the Doo-Dooettes, Airway, and most of the other units that the LAFMS extruded. These bastards all glued together choice, disparate elements of musical-fringe-culture like the dedicated, all-American scientific-hobbyists they were.

Improvisation, concrete assemblage, kraut-moosh, tinkling, noise, and weirdness for the sake of weirdness were all perceived as hallmarks of the LAFMS ethos. In a year as dull as 1975, the wee-est taste of meat that strong could be enough to separate your head from your body. Forever. Again. For those who were brave enough to send away for LAFMS records or tapes, its name will gawp forever as a wide portal to a parallel cosmos that could only be suspected in the years before the "cassette revolution" (so called). And since almost no one has ever heard all the material that makes up this voluminous compendium, it is guaranteed to be its own set of trap doors to a very special void.

You are there. Now. Lucky. -

It's too bad that Jack Cole is in NYC right now as this is maybe his favorite band/subject and he is very familiar with their discography. I first heard them through the Dream Syndicate Duck/Precoda link, then in college radio where my station had exhaustive LAFMS resources/live performance a/v. but yeah, revive this thread after the weekend for JC.

cool, that's good to know. maybe i can trade him something for a cdr or two. or three. or four.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:08 (eighteen years ago) link

of course, not having heard a note, i want the ten cd box set that FE has for sale: http://www.forcedexposure.com/bin/search.pl?search_string=los+angeles&searchfield=artist

hmm, is there anyone at forced exposure i could trade with? i will probably never have a hundred dollars to spend for many many years.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:12 (eighteen years ago) link

That ten-CD box regularly goes for about $50 on ebay. But I'd start with the Light Bulb Emergency Cassette (2 tapes) and the 1980 compilation Darker Skratcher neither of which are on cd and both of which can be found on sl5k.

LAFMS is pretty spotty stuff. They've been very good at mythologizing themselves. Some of it's wondrously good.

I once got the four CD set of Blorp Essette in a three dollar bin! This was in San Diego!

jack made me a 2cdr comp a couple years ago of this stuff that is awesome.

But yeah, I immediately thought of JC. He da LAFMS man.

i got blorp esette for $2! and i sold it on ebay for $30!

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Friday, 15 July 2005 22:28 (eighteen years ago) link

I have the Darker Scratcher LP and a 2-LP album from either the Doo Doo Ettes or Le Forte Four (maybe a split?) that I don't have much remembrance of. DS is very good, it's like their stab at commerciality (or as commercial as a record can be with a Non cut on it).

LAFMS had a "float" in the Pasadena Doo Dah parade about 25 years ago that consisted of some metal poles forming a big cube over which they had stretched black plastic. They walked inside the cube, playing some instruments (horns, maybe a drum and guitar).

Wait, did Jack Cole ever see this? (Or Elvis Telecom for that matter.) I picked up one of those Decayes CDs a few months back at Poo-Bah...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 07:15 (seventeen years ago) link

never saw it. Poo-Bah just reissued Dennis Duck's "Dennis Does Disco" which is freaking great turntable manipulation. A classic brought back. How was the Decayes, ned? i've been tempted since Duck plays on that.

The Airway alb has just been reished on CD:

I liked it well enough on first listen though I should go back! I've finally been digging into all the LAFMS a bit after knowing about 'em for years and all.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 15:52 (seventeen years ago) link

scott, email me offlist if you are still looking to trade for some of this stuff. I don't have much to add right now except that I wish the box had included more of the actual releases instead of two whole discs of Recchion and Potter's home recordings.

I'd probably write a bit more but I'm off to work.

Wow - just out:

On CD, too.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 9 February 2007 03:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Yr cracked -- the Recchion and Potts discs in the LAFMS box are great and lots of whole recording are included like the Airway that Harbinger has reissued.

Jack Cole (jackcole), Friday, 9 February 2007 07:50 (seventeen years ago) link

I know thise discs are pretty great (Recchion is esp. amazing, I love his solo disc Chaotica), I just think it was a typically perverse example of RRRon's compiling. And to leave out the Le Forte Four album is just tragic. I seem to recall plans for a second box but it seems obvious that the Cortical folks aren't going to put it out. What I'm saying is that I would rather have had more complete documentation of the actual lifetime-of-LAFMS releases in the box, and separate releases for those two discs.

Some of those omissions were rectified by the LP+7" series but not enough for me.

btw, any news on Gary Todd?

sleeve (sleeve), Friday, 9 February 2007 15:52 (seventeen years ago) link

that said, the box is still one of the best investments out there.

Second of the PooBah LAFMS reissues is out--Acnode One.
One LP is the first Dr. Id tape (+ guests) and the second LP is the first Ju Sukreet Meet tape (+ guests). Awesome stuff. Free playing, tape loops, junk noises, sound collage, tinkling bells, weirdo moaning. Awesome awesome stuff. I like it more than the Dennis Duck set, I think, by virtue of its diversity. Also, both LPs have outtakes from the sessions that were not originally issued on the tapes. Get it get it get it.

sanskrit, Sunday, 9 December 2007 01:21 (sixteen years ago) link

We keep that Dennis Duck Goes Disco action in stock at almost all time, mike. It's a lot of loops and turntable manipulation. Whacked out, wrong speed, no anti-skate control.. needle just kinda sits in a groove for a while and shifts over whenever it feels like it. I enjoy it a lot.

ian, Sunday, 9 December 2007 01:45 (sixteen years ago) link

I've only heard the Dennis Duck track from the 10 CD box set. One o' Clock Jump, I think it's called. Really cool track, like a hyper-edited Chip 'n' Dale megamix. Is each track a different kind of experiment though? I'm guessing there's much more direct manipulation involved...

Michael Dudikoff presents Action Adventure Theatre, Sunday, 9 December 2007 19:32 (sixteen years ago) link

Mr. Ellison is correct. Dennis Duck Does Disco is fantastic. Then again, seeing Smegma too many times live has retarded my ability to appreciate them as much as the straight up LAFMSers. Also, Mike Lastra's Northwest Passage doc kinda sucks, but then again, so did the Portland scene with a few exceptions.
