One of my all time favorite bands is releasing a new album this week. I haven't really been able to get into them for a while but still interested in new music. So ILM is this album worth seeking out?

they should've gone with "he poos clouds" as a title.

I think its really really good.

It's at least the most commercially-geared album they've made since Gold Afternoon Fix (shorter songs, sharper melodies).

In lieu of loving the album (I have not yet heard it, though they're one of my all-time faves too), I adore the cover art.

Absolutely this is worth seeking out. Don't forget the Back Like Two Beasts album from last year.

Where's the best place to purchase this if you're in the U.S.?

I've been purchasing them direct from the band at TheChurchBand.com. Supposedly, Amazon has it too.

"i like this album and i'm not even 30!"

:)
anyway, the Church are one of the few bands still able to deliver the goods even if they've been around for, er, a lot of years.

I didn't like the last two albums very much at all. But a few songs into this one and I'm already convinced it's better than those.

That's right they used to be one of my favourite bands in the universe, they really did. This album reminds me of why. I think the production is really great, too.

"Pure Chance" sounds...dare I say...groundbreaking? I don't know what kind of weird subtle synth thing they've got going there but it makes me proud to be alive in 2006.

god, let's light a candle for these guys, eh?

Where the hell have they been for the last two albums, where have they been???

Personally I like "Forget yourself" a lot: there are at least 4/5 songs that are amazing. But this new one is just perfect - in that slightly damaged Church way, of course.

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Saturday, 22 April 2006 07:37 (eighteen years ago) link

"Real Toggle Action" just doesn't sound quite like anything I've ever heard before, by anybody.

I'm on track 10 now and nothing has let me down here. Are we on masterpiece territory? I can't believe my ears.

Did proceed in time to reach the final end of the record. And even as it played out, the last minute or so of this album, it was like I knew that was the last but I kept thinking "oh my god is it really over now? oh my god no it can't be over" but it was. And then there was silence. And this could be the best album of the year. Right here. Over and out.

Bimble you share my love of Hologram of Baal don't you? I should get this album.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 22 April 2006 08:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Yes, I do Tim. Long time no see (post).

Okay, finally got this. Indeed, quite excellent. "Block" is a classic dramatic album-starter from Steve, love the various arrangement touches on "Unified Field" and "Overview," Marty's "She'll Come Back For You Tomorrow" is a treat but so far the double sucker punch would easily have to be "Pure Chance" -- moody Steve ruminations and allusive phrasing over appropriate music -- sliding right into "Never Before." Now is the latter song Peter's? If so, that could be his crowning moment.

Oh my god, I feel so guilty for leaving this album behind. I went through a particularly stressful weekend, complete with a sprained ankle and I forgot about every single piece of music I had been listening to up to that point, I had to start all over again. But I think I'll play it tonight, for the hell of it. Sorry it got left behind.

how about he poos, uninvited, like the clouds.

I've seen them on every tour since 1986, but holy crap the Wednesday show was so, so terrific. It's the "plugged-in acoustic" format again with a lot of the older material redone to fit in with the instrumentation. The main surprise was Steve - sounding (and looking) about 100% better than he has in years.

I took a bunch of photos too: http://www.flickr.com/photos/quartzcity/sets/72157594205707936/

Rob Dickinson is the opener for the tour I think so it's worth getting there a little early.

Excellent to hear. :-) I was kinda zonked this week and so am sad to have missed this, but better to know that they're doing well than not at all!
