I just ordered his Blood Sutra record on a friend's recommendation that it's the most slamming jazz record in awhile. Previously I've only heard his Mike Ladd + a bunch of lame poets collabo, which was ehhhhh. Opinions?

Live it was pretty complex.

I've heard great things about the new one, but haven't found it anywhere in town GRUMBLE GRUMBLE I WANT TO MOVE TO A REAL CITY ETC.

I figured B-Sides would probably have it, but instead of making a special trip to State St. and being disappointed I just ordered it online. I'm a bad music supporter/Madisonian/etc.

I've listen to half of Blood Sutra and I don't like it as much as I was hoping to. It's too atonal-sounding for me.

I know there are some crazy structures going on that I don't understand yet, especially in the first track (which reminds me of the Bad Plus song "Big Eater" minus the melodic sense). It's kind of busy and relentless in the same way as some Greg Osby or M-Base records that I never got into, but I'll give it another shot (or at least listen to the second half of the record).

I really like when he writes about piano or music in general, less so when he writes about math and music.

eight months pass...

I scoffed when I heard he had a song on his latest album inspired by and named after Robert Hood, but had to eat some crow when I finally listened. Shit is real.

Based on the couple tracks I got to hear before the power outage, yeah, I would tend to believe that.

I have had it on in the house all morning and then on the ipod this aft, it is a real stunner. It sounds like a peak Miles/Andrew Hill collab to me - really that good.
