do you have the dates?

The one mp3 I have, sounded a lot better than I expected it to when I found it/heard it again a month later. Like The Shaggs-gone-hardcore (and probably a ton of other reference points I'm not clued up to, early Boredoms is what I keep reading).

saw them a while back in new york. lots of fun, definitely worth seeing. the new record on tzadik isn't quite what i hoped it would be, however.

michael crumsho (clikatowi), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 14:38 (eighteen years ago) link

I agree w/ Michael - I was expecting to love the new album and in the end I only like it. Something else has been going on every time they've come to town, but I get the impression they'd be great live. I'd say, see if 'em if you can, I plan to next time.

TRG (TRG), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 14:43 (eighteen years ago) link

im going to see them on fri in london

the tzadik alb is great, whatcha talkin bout

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 14:50 (eighteen years ago) link

the tzadik album isn't nearly as good as the guyunne cassette stuff. it has it's moments, i guess, but this band is better in short bursts or live.

michael crumsho (clikatowi), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 15:26 (eighteen years ago) link

Everything I've read / heard indicates that Afrirampo are brain-crushing and bottomless theater-of-mayhem live, but their records are so-so. I've got a bootleg of a Tokyo show and heard their WFMU live broadcast, and both pissed all over the studio stuff big time.

They opened for Lightning Bolt on their last US swing, I'm still kicking myself for missing that one. So if they play yr town it's probably best to hop on the jitney and get there. It might be the difference between seeing a Suckdog & Costes show and listening to a Suckdog & Costes record. Ah, probably not. Does anybody around here even remember Suckdog & Costes?

Edward III (edward iii), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:44 (eighteen years ago) link

Costes performed in my town a couple of years ago. I've never smelled anything else quite like it.
Afrirampo have great vocals.

saw them opening for sonic youth in amsterdam last year. totally blew me away & i immediately bought the cdr they were offering at the merchandice stand. listening to that at home was far less exciting. so yes: go see them live!

willem (willem), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 19:03 (eighteen years ago) link

they're totally rad live--for sure check them out. i've seen them in japan a bunch of times. and the tzadik record is nothing compared to their earlier stuff like 'urusa in japan'.

Yeah, I know it's taken me a long time for me to respond but, I have some very greedy appliance hogs in my family. Well like I said above, it was the best show I've seen, but that might not be saying much coming from me. I actually really want to see dmbq tomorrow, but I don't know if I'll be able to make it. That show last night was pretty freaking awesome though!

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Monday, 13 March 2006 10:09 (eighteen years ago) link

i haven't seen afrirampo and i can believe that they're best experienced live (a friend who just caught them at sxsw called them "the future of rock 'n' roll"). but i like the album a lot on its own. i like the way they scatter recognizable rock and punk moves around, so that they'll kind of lurch into a bo diddley beat or some zep boogie riff, like these are all just toys in a playroom and they throw them around until something breaks and then move on to the next one.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 19 March 2006 06:36 (eighteen years ago) link

"Did you catch dmbq charlie??"

i didnt i flaked but part of the reason was i have a ticket to dmbq's show at knitting factory on this tuesday the 21st. did you go? will you be at the knitting factory show?

i'm still kicking myself for missing afrirampo after hearing all this praise

charlie bucket (charlie bucket), Sunday, 19 March 2006 06:53 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, I saw them. They had a good climax at the end of the set, with the singer bringing out his gasmask/microphone thing, and then taking as many jackets he could from various audience members and then attempting to wear them all. The drummer was hillarious! He was wearing a thong and his shirt was tied up all gay like, totally flamboyant. I wonder if this is his way of filling the shoes of their former female drummer. At the very end of the set, after the mask thing, I thought the singer was going to strip totally naked, thank god he didn't, he just unbuttoned his jeans after taking off his shirt. But he did manage to yank down the drummer's thong, revealing a good portion of pubes and the top half of his dick. They were totally destructive too, especially with the drums! It was a great show, but still, not to make you kick yourself more or anything, I thought Afrirampo was tops!
I wasn't aware that they were playing at the knitting factory. Shoot, I don't think I'll make it because I have a really late class that day. Oh well I saw them once this month, I shouldn't get spoiled! : )But as for Afrirampo I have now made a decision to never miss them when they are in town. The funy thing is that I too felt compelled to call them the "future of rock n roll". I'll never forget that show. Especially because Oni and Pika were there just like any other concert goers before they played. Checking out the bands and such. They were there when DMBQ played too! I remember when DMBQ were about to start playing, Oni walked up right next to me, as if she was going to view the show from that spot! I wanted to try and say hi or something, but by the time I could get the nerve, she had already decided there was a better spot somewhere else.

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Monday, 20 March 2006 00:00 (eighteen years ago) link

Brian, you said to seek out "Urusa in Japan", well I got it recently but it's not on the Gyunne label, it's on Ki/oon records. Is there a difference between the two? Also it doesn't have the DVD, so that could be the difference, but I just wanted to check just in case.
Every time that I put an answer on this thread it seems to die for a while, so hopefully I'll get a response. Thanks.

They were pretty astonishing at Mono in Glasgow on Tuesday. Anyone else there? Actually quite garagey, and although they're wild performers, it certainly isn't just chaos.

xpost

yeah, I was at Mono. It was the fifth time I've seen them, and the worst, although it was still fantastic. The new songs are very different but still great, although the performance this time didn't quite reach the on-the-edge-of-collapse insanity I've come to expect.

The AMA album appears from my first few listens to be good, sounding both like both bands at their most abstract and like something completely different.

Re: that Gyunne URUSA, yes it has 2 discs, one of which is the DVD, so it must be reissued on another label without the DVD.

But fear not cuz that video is up on You Tube, for the song "afrirampo", it's wonderful. It's like a DJ Jazzy Jeff video gone all Boredoms. Looks like the had a heck of a fun time making it:

wow, somehow managing to find this thread is one of my proudest moments.

There's a new song from their upcoming (September, Japan) album on their myspace: http://www.myspace.com/afrirampo. Pretty different from what they've released, and really great. Can also be heard and seen as recorded by my girlfriend at the aforementioned Mono concert in the second half of this]/url] video!

There's also a recent video of Oni + acoustic guitar on youtube: [url]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YeprNGKcb0&mode=related&search=

I played sxsw with them last year. they were great.

anyone know what size venues they play in japan or europe?

UncleTomfly, Saturday, 7 April 2007 03:01 (seventeen years ago) link

They aren't a big draw in the UK. Mono is pretty small - couple of hundred maybe? Has to be the cleanest and most civilized UK venue I've ever been in though.

Soukesian, Saturday, 7 April 2007 08:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Anybody hear the new album??

Jack Burton, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 06:59 (sixteen years ago) link

I just got it today. It all flows together and the last 10 minutes are great, some of their best material. Need to hear the rest more. Plenty of repetition, the average song length is about 6 minutes. I like the colorful artwork! One major complaint is that there are some really gorgeous parts (like, most of the final two songs) interrupted by static-y compression noise.

Hope people are still paying attention to Afrirampo.

They were performing on and off 2016-2019. I hope they start again post-virus.

They play lots from newest album (Afriverse) but also old favourites too. Many
concerts open with 'Miracle Lucky Girls'.

Just as talented, just as attractive, just as awe-inspiring as before.
