New LP Beautysleep just out. As good a time as any for the C/D S/D treatment.

(Her whole career, obv.)

multiple radiohead member snogger - lucky girl (in respect of Ed O'Brien anyway)

leigh, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Her new one is, eh, curiously uninspiring, which is such a disappointment, considering how cool a few of the songs were on her first solo album, and how great many of the songs were on the Belly albums. But I guess the question is, why go solo if you're going to sound the same as your band albums?

Mickey Black Eyes, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The best thing she did was leave Throwing Muses. And now she has sorta re-joined them. Ergh....

Andy K, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

You are quite clearly on crack, Mr Kellman. The worst thing she ever did was to leave the Muses. The first Belly album sounded pretty good at the time, but it's been downhill all the way from there. Her recent single was so bland it could have been made by Natalie Imbruglia.

RickyT, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Near the end of her time with the Muses, I found myself really enjoying Tanya Donnelly's songs, moreso than Kristin Hersh's. First Belly album was extremely enjoyable at the time (though I haven't heard it in a while and may not like it so much anymore), but the second Belly album was dreadful--Tanya oversang until her voice broke and there was just too much inappropriate cock-rockorama thrown in. And then the first solo album was just totally unmemorable to me, to the point where I wasn't even going to bother with this new one, unless something else convinces me.

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Always liked that cool photo of her in the cafe on the inside of the Hunkpapa sleeve. "Not To Soon" from The Real Ramona was class -- real pop suss. Saw a few Belly gigs in the early 90s but never bothered with King or the first solo LP. Melody Maker went a bit overboard with her in 92/93. Some lovely little songs though.

David Gunnip, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Donelly's best years were in Throwing Muses, but that's thanks to the mere association with Kristin Hersh. Worst moments on all Muses records pre-Red Heaven = moments where Donelly sings. Someone could wipe her vocals off every TM record and I'd be fine with it. Me no likey Tanya.

she was dead cool in the Throwing muses, The first Belly album was also good, from what I heard stuff afterwards was a bit poor, however, I did get the last single and it was good, and I will be seeing her on Thursday, I may report back.

The Breeders' Safari EP was the pinnacle of her career.

Michael Jones, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Tanya's only TM contribution of any quality was "Not Too Soon". I loved the first Belly album but now I can't be bothered to listen to it. "Now They'll Sleep" from the second Belly album is a brilliant song but I think what really spoiled that record was Glyn Johns' production. Her solo stuff is wallpaper.

electric sound of jim, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i think the person who said tanya had a great year because of kim deal has it backwards as it was obviously kim who had the better deal (har) in that partnership as once tanya left the breeders turned to poo. same goes for throwing muses, not nearly as good after she left and kristin hersh not getting back to it until she started making solo records. 'dragonhead' is a better song than 'not too soon'. she has an off- kilter way with a pop-tune that makes her pretty unique i think, definitely classic, although i haven't heard anything from the new one.

electric sound of jim, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I think Tanya's looks and voice have been half a curse, becuase she's really good at just a narrow vein of personal, eccentric pop, but she's always tempted to play the role of the sexy frontwoman. That added something to the Muses chemistry, but she just isn't convincing on her own.

Curt, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

One of the things that prevented me ever getting Lovesongs For Underdogs was its almost constant presence in sale and second- hand bins. I only ended up getting it because it was $2. It's not as bad as I expected.

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'd like to stick up for Kim Deal and the Breeders. Last Splash is an excellent album. It has a great flow to it, one of the few records that I enjoy hearing from beginning to end. And I also feel that Josephine Wiggs has not really gotten her due. I really like the JW-oriented songs on the Breeders singles: 900, Lord of the Thighs, the first version of Head to Toe. Her solo LP was very good - a nice mix of instrumentals and pop songs. I even like the Dusty Trails CD, although it sometimes goes a little too far into easy-listening territory.

But back to Tanya vs the Breeders. I just don't see how you can say that TD was such a blessing to them. She had one co-writing credit out of 11 originals, and as far as I can tell from a quick refresher listen through the LP, except for singing the intro/outro to 'Happiness is a warm gun' her vocal contribution amounts to back- up. All I'm saying is that its hard to beleive that she "made the band"

The Amps record was good too. I'm anxious to hear the new breeders album, but am skeptical as it seems this time around its just Kim and a bunch of guys i've never heard of. we'll see

Ron Hudson, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I think I'd like to take back that flippant comment above (though I do think of Safari as some kind of high-water mark for all involved), as I've just remembered a terrific Belly show in Liverpool early on before they had a record out. She did "Green" as a solo encore and I got a bit moist-eyed. Oh, and later on, in Leicester, with MTV airplay and a whiff of mainstream success around the corner, with the glorious Leslie Langston on bass.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 26 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i just think that sometimes someone's presence as a censor to dud ideas is important, tanya may not have written the songs but when she left the breeders went downhill so she had some sort of positive influence. last splash isn't horrible but it is nowhere near as cool as pod. i always thought that straitjacket fits were like the male analogue to throwing muses, when andrew brough left they went rotten and he only wrote a couple songs per album like tanya and his songs were the more pop-oriented numers and also his partner was the more 'emotional' one.

keith, Wednesday, 27 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Thanks Keith, at least you're up to "not horrible" instead of "turned to poo" - Anyways different strokes...

Chris - AND Mary Lorson last night???? Wow. Full report pl.

Jeff W, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

As an appetiser whilst Cabbage prepares the main course here's the setlist:

The Bees
Swoon
Landspeed Song
Moonbeam Monkey
Keeping You
The Night You Saved My Life
Darkside
The Storm
Wrap-Around Skirt
Breathe Around You
Restless
After Your Party
Slow Dog
Hot Burrito #1

Too many songs from her (weak) new album for me but more than compensated for by the rest.

Mary Lorson plays & sings better each time I see her. She's lovely.

David, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Sorry, completely forgot I was going to report back, and thanks to David for reminding me. Mary Lorson was a great start, I'd never seen her solo before but I'd heard good things. She was good, very good in fact, simple songs sung well, a very good thing in my book. Didn't know enough about the songs to go too deeply into them though (and I don't ahve a tape of her set to refer to either)

Onto Tanya, she was way cool, the voice is back to goodness, and despite a mid-set slump into dirge and accountant rock I enjoyed it tremendously. The main offenders were The Storm and Wrap around skirt, the latter having some of the worst lyrics I've heard in a long while. But.... Landspeed song was very good, faster tempo, nearer her earlier stuff. Keeping You which saw the entrance of Mary Lorson on backing (iirc) was great, kind of like a modern version of Hot Burrito only with swirly keyboard noises instead of pedal steel, this was a good thing.

After your party was great, lovely lyrics unfortunately listening back to it now I can hear what the backing guitar reminded me of - Mull of Kintyre, hmmmm.

Last two songs, Slow Dog and Hot Burrito #1, great way to finish. Slow Dog sounded a little out of place against her newer countryish stuff but was excellent and got the biggest crowd reaction by far. I can't say much about Hot Burrito apart from it's one of my favourite songs of all time and she did it bloody well.

Other things from the gig.....

The mad Irish bloke who shouted that he loved Tanya, and when she said "you sound like you mean it" replied "but I do!" This bloke was a mentalist fronkly, exhorting all those around him to clap along and dancing like one of Robert Palmer's backing singers, very odd.

The Guardian's review of the Manchester gig was right though, the audience did consist mainly of aging indie kids.

That's about it, sorry for the writing style and the quantity.

chris, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Am I alone in regarding Madder Rose's 'Panic On' as totally, utterly wonderful?

Alan T, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'm with you all the way, C. Madder Rose #1 & #2 have got peppy tunes and handsome guitar being played. I traded Saint Low back in - couldn't hear what the reviews found so beguiling.

Curt, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Madder Rose have a certain it, to be sure. Saw 'em back in 1993 opening for the Sundays, and they were most cool. Fun fact! The Sundays had the entire 3000-strong crowd dancing around like maniacs.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I also saw them in '93, while on a visit to Seattle, opening for Juliana Hatfield of all people. Madder Rose were better, tho' they overdid the feedback a bit. (American club venues rock, btw.)

Car Song is wonderful.

Jeff W, Tuesday, 5 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The first St Low single on Easy!Tiger with Anywhere & Keep An Open Mind on it is absolutely beautiful. I prefer that minimalist approach to the more produced/arranged stuff on the first SL album.

I picked up the new St Low record "Tricks For Dawn" (credited to Mary Lorson And Saint Low) after her Rota show on Saturday and it has at least half a dozen excellent songs on it.

I think you should all give her/them another try.

I could never get enough of that Billy Coté's feedback stuff ...

Good lord.

Yes, the first Madder Rose album is one of my fave post-Galaxie 500 US pop records. "While Away" is a good sulk song. "Panic On" has its sparkling moments but isn't quite up there.

I sold my A5 hardback version of King recently. It wasn't that hard. I have a great fondness for Star that I don't want to spoil by actually listening to the thing for the first time in my 30s. Lovesongs and Underdogs I have somewhere on noisy white vinyl; I doubt it's been played since 1998. The venerable Mr Moore kept me in the loop with Beautysleep; I need to give that another go.

One of the nicest people I've ever "met" (don't-know-when-to-leave fanboyish bothering at gigs) but the records don't grab me like Ms Hersh's.

A couple of lines on “Happiness is a Warm Gun” is all I can think of. The second album was supposed to be all her songs, but that spun off to become Belly. She posted the original demos (labelled Breeders) on Soundcloud last year.

Green, Pools in Eyes, Reel, The River, Giant, Dragonhead, Angel, Not Too Soon, Honeychain

Yep, "Green" off the first (proper) album; "The Party" from the "Throwing Muses" single, "Raise the Roses" from the Doghouse cassette, "Reel" from the "Chains Changed" EP, "Pools in Eyes" from "The Fat Skier" EP, "The River" and "Giant" from "House Tornado," "Dragonhead" and "Angel" from "Hunkpapa," and "Not Too Soon" and "Honeychain" from "The Real Ramona."

Tanya later reused a few melodic bits from "Raise the Roses" for Belly tracks, like "Angel" (the opening instrumental part) and "Sexy S" (the chorus, with different lyrics).

I'm trying to come up with a list of songs outside her band and solo work where Tanya sings more than just backing vocals - guest vocalist or at least a duet. Using Discogs as my main source of her appearances, here's what I've come up with:

This Mortal Coil - You And Your Sister: duet with Kim Deal
Catherine Wheel - Judy Staring At The Sun (single version): duet with solo verses
Josie And The Pussycats: duet with Juliana Hatfield
The Production Club - Devil's Kiss: guest vocalist
The Blackstone Valley Sinners - To Heck With Ole Santa Claus: guest vocalist
Pocket - Jars Of Fireflies: guest vocalist
Buffalo Tom - Don't Forget Me: backing vocals with one solo verse
Shoplifters Of The World Unite: guest vocalist with Dylan In The Movies
The Wingdale Community Singers - Passing Stranger: duet bordering on backing vocals
The Wingdale Community Singers - Hunan #3: duet on one verse, otherwise backing vocals
The Wingdale Community Singers - A Sweeter Way To Say Goodbye: barely backing vocals
Dylan In The Movies - Girl With The Black Tights: backing vocals with one solo verse
Stephen Hero - Golden: duet
The Lovecats: duet with Dylan In The Movies
Tracy Bonham - Sharks Can't Sleep: guest vocalist
She Makes War - Paper Thin: backing vocals

Discogs also says she sings on No Man is Roger Miller – Win! Instantly! but I've never heard it.

What have I missed?
