Saddest opening lyrics?

What are the saddest opening lyics (of albums or just songs) ever? Just heard this one: "We're falling apart / like fathers and sons," off a song by Amadine.

That one's doubly gut-wrenching because it suggests that fathers and sons provide the archetypical example of "falling apart." Others? I'm sure there are lots, and sadder.

Amandine, that is. "Fathers & Sons."

marc h. (marc h.), Sunday, 4 December 2005 22:12 (eighteen years ago) link

Late New Year's Eve, paper hat on your head
It's hard to believe you'll ever be dead.
But that dream where you're falling
You've had since you're five
Is a bird on your shoulder who whispers goodbye.

It's a good thing tears never show in the pouring rain.
As if a good thing could ever make up for all the pain.
There'll be no last chance or promise to never mess it up again.
Just the sweet pain of watching your back as you walk... as I'm watching you walk away.

i'm going to have to go for "when routine bites hard/and ambitions are low", just because quoting LWTUA in these threads seems to be my official job on ILM now :)

most evocative opening lyric i can think of right now would be "sometimes a wind blows", from "mysteries of love". means nothing, says everything.

gear (gear), Sunday, 4 December 2005 22:23 (eighteen years ago) link

The whole song is really sad - obviously...but the opening lyrics seem particularly tragic...

So this is permanence, love's shattered pride.
What once was innocence, turned on its side.
A cloud hangs over me, marks every move,
Deep in the memory, of what once was love.

Shouldn't there be a what's the greatest Joy Division lyric thread?

Apart from those cheery JoyDiv boys, this always makes me maudlin, partly because of Billie Holidays delivery, partly because the imagery is so terrible. Can a song be sad and anger inducing? I think so.

I believe that this thread misses two of the most saddest songs. The whole songs are devastating and they follow like this:

1. Queen - Too much love will kill you
2. Evanescence - My immortal

1:
I'm just the pieces of the man I used to be
Too many bitter tears are raining down on me
I'm far away from home
And I've been facing this alone
For much too long
I feel like no-one ever told the truth to me
About growing up and what a struggle it would be
...
I'm just the shadow of the man I used to be
And it seems like there's no way out of this for me
I used to bring you sunshine
Now all I ever do is bring you down
How would it be if you were standing in my shoes
Can't you see that it's impossible to choose
No there's no making sense of it
Every way I go I'm bound to lose
Too much love will kill you
Just as sure as none at all
...

2:
I'm so tired of being here
Suppressed by all my childish fears
And if you have to leave
I wish that you would just leave
'Cause your presence still lingers here
And it won't leave me alone
These wounds won't seem to heal
This pain is just too real
There's just too much that time cannot erase
...

Like a dirty little sob, I found a balloon buried in the yard. It was the saddest thing I ever found, sadder than if it had once been alive, a pet or a grandmother. Left over from a party, I guess. And I don't like parties. But they're fun I guess. And when they're over it's worse than when they begin, and when they're forgotten it's horrible, more absolute than a corpse. And I found its shriveled skull, pocketed it, put it in the green tank with the Stingray and the Tonka Toys.

knowing he is capable of writing songs like this -- and about 1/2 of his songs on the 90s albums, through 69 love songs are near this level -- it's disappointing to me that his recent material is mostly kitschy, conceptual bullshit

fervently nice (Treeship), Monday, 29 July 2013 05:01 (ten years ago) link

the saddest stephin merritt lyric is, i think, from "as you turn to go": "I know I'm not supposed to say I'm sorry / I know you've had more loves than Mata Hari / But you know you're the star of my life story / And I'm so sorry."

Also Momus's voice is lovely in melancholic mode. I wish he wrote more songs in that vein.
