The Hives are Great!

Their album is totally fun, with like Guitar Wolf but not as weird. It just makes me want to thrash around and dance. Or maybe put it on a soundtrack. I bet if I played this at a party, everybody would think I was hip. Yay, Hives!

I completely agree -- most fun album I've bought in what seems like eons. "Die, Alight"? Awesome. "Outsmarted"? Rocktastic! "Hate to Say I Told You So"? GODLIKE! They rock. Formulaic? Surely -- but no more so than, say your White Stripes or your Strokes! But who cares? THEY ROCK!

And they tell the best jokes ever on stage. They can't be retro either, cos that fifty year old twenty something Tom Cox doesn't get it, the oaf. Best rumours about them so far- they were formed by a bunch of Swedish schoolteachers who chose the likliest lad in their charge as frontman. When the guitarist first did the splits on stage, a move he'd perfected at home, the rest of the band were amazed. Hives rock.

Snotty Moore, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Obviously they rock. That's not a rumour.

Snotty Moore, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The main riff in "Hate To Say I Told You So" reminds me a little bit of "Seether" by Veruca Salt. So obviously it rocks.

EdwardO, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh don't ruin it for me like that -- Veruca Salt!? Pfffffffttt!!!!

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Who saw this on TOTP last week? Impressive.

suzy, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Still don't like them much, from what I've heard. But I like reading about them!

Tom, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

They were irritating and feeble on ToTP, which was disappointing - plus I hate the way they dress. I wish they wd make much more of their silly banana-splitsishness: they could be like the GREATEST GUITAR BAND EVER WHOSE MEMBERS ARE ALL NINE YEARS OLD. Also I think the drummer is way lame, but I only know that one song.

mark s, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Probably i will buy the LP soon. I am a sap.

mark s, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I love the bassists moustache, like an old German porn star. For that reason alone they 're worth listening to.

Billy Dods, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The hives make me weep like a school girl, also listening to them makes me want to be a better person. Yet they are kinda creepy looking cause of the whole clockwork orange outfits.

Yes it was very ragged. They sounded much better on the Jools Holland show some weeks ago.

THE HIVES ARE LAW ... YOU ARE CRIME!

rener, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I got the record over the weekend and it RoXoR. Some great in reality perception songtitles - viz "The Hives Are Law, You Are Crime".

does anyone know if live they have endearing europorn accents?

DV, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I heard something by them on the radio yesterday. I couldn't figure out what I was listening to, maybe a new Love As Laughter song or something. I thought it was really good.

nyurgh, the DV-Rener hive mind strikes again.

two months pass...
Quite entertaining this "Hate to Say I Told You So". The melody could almost be from the Buzzcocks. The guitars sound ramonish. Good for a party especially when drunk I imagine. I can see me dancing to this too.

So... it's ok for me to like the Hives? Hooray!

I know *precisely* what I am doing. We need more corruption of young innocents.

The Hives remind me of the kind of stuff you hear on Estrus compilations ("100% Ape Shit Rock", f'rinstance). This, at least to me, is a good thing. Hives today = Makers '94?

Swedish rock outfit the Hives is presently recording its next project, "The Black and White Album," in Oxford, Miss., with producer Dennis Herring (Modest Mouse, Elvis Costello). The follow-up to 2004's "Tyrannosaurus Hives," which has sold 178,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan, is due Oct. 9.

"This new album has been recorded all over the world because we thought it was time to have other people involved besides ourselves and our closest friends," frontman Howlin' Pelle Almvquist says.

The Hives have also worked with Pharrell Williams in Miami, Jacknife Lee in London and in Sweden with Bob Hund member Tomas Oberg.

"At times it has felt like we are prisoners to our own creativity and that it is taking a long time," Almvquist says. "At this time we have a lot of songs. In the past we only had what was on each album. We ask you to bear with us as we take the time to wrestle this onto an album."

As previously reported, the Hives will join Maroon 5 as the support act for the latter's fall North American tour, which begins Sept. 29 in Auburn Hills, Mich.

who likes the hives in 2014

✓ corton charlemagne (nakhchivan), Saturday, 23 August 2014 16:21 (nine years ago) link

judging by someone who mockingly retweeted simon price's enthusiasm for them, probably the same people who did in 2002

do 16yr olds today like the hives?

✓ corton charlemagne (nakhchivan), Saturday, 23 August 2014 16:22 (nine years ago) link

short answer: no

there is lots of hives stuff on tumblr

these people seem pretty young for the most part

mostly a rhetorical question crut but i suspect there are 16 year olds who like the hives at the reading festival

this is england after all

✓ corton charlemagne (nakhchivan), Saturday, 23 August 2014 16:28 (nine years ago) link

there are probably also scandinavian expatriates there

✓ corton charlemagne (nakhchivan), Saturday, 23 August 2014 16:29 (nine years ago) link

i actually have no clue who likes the hives

I presume they like themselves.

He kept bellowing at the crowd with a kind of sub-Jagger faux-American twang, it was beyond horrible

hmm,

We were at reading festival yesterday. We did not go see The Hives, other bands were available, but will probably check out the BBC coverage later.

They did the Jolla Holland new years eve thing, they seemed pretty alright there but as I say, will look later.

bellowing at the crowd with a kind of sub-Jagger faux-American twang

this is p much contintental garage rock in a nutshell, right? there's always been an audience for it, tho usually more niche than the hives in their (brief) pop moment. half amazed they're still at it. i've got a lot more tolerance for this kind of stuff than most around here, but even so, haven't knowingly heard a new hives song in over a decade.

Adding ease. Adding wonder. Adding (contenderizer), Sunday, 24 August 2014 07:58 (nine years ago) link

Have very fond memories of a 2001 Hives club gig.

willem, Sunday, 24 August 2014 09:29 (nine years ago) link

Have seen them lots of times over the years and have enjoyed every show. Contenderizer's "continental garage rock" is spot-on - I'm hard-wired for most of that. I dig it when the Hives come up on random play but their ridiculous live show is the whole point. Early cassette from 1994 is a fave - before all those Sonics reissues hit Scandinavia the Hives were warp speed new wavy punks who manage to out-accelerate the Toy Dolls. Almqvist is the best Mitch Hedberg impersonator out there.

Sympathize with them for being on the wrong side of one of the most ridiculous headlines ever.
