Mojo Nixon: C/D

I was recently watching a VHS tape a friend made up of ancient Mojo Nixon stuff - videos for "Debbie Gibson Is Pregnant With My Two-Headed Love Child," guest-VJ appearances on MTV that look more like cable access than cable access does these days, some vintage concert footage - and it occured to me how unbelievably great he was.

Mojo combined biting satire with barnyard sophmoric Redneck humor years before the "Blue Collar" morons and actually could play the fuck out of his guitar when he was so-inclined.

I miss the days when he lived in Cincy because he'd come up to Columbus a few times a year to play Little Brother's - and that was always a treat. I hope that the Californians are getting a similar treatment now that he's back on the left coast.

I vote classic and I also vote that anyone who doesn't ain't got no Elvis in 'em.

Isn't he on satellite radio now? He was the afternoon DJ on the classic rock station in San Diego for a while and he was pretty good. He got to play some stuff they don't normally play.

I once rode a train with Mr. Mojo N - it was the 1st class compartment, and he had a Sparkletts water bottle and he kept bangin' on it. I actually got off of the train in Brussels, rather than continue on to Paris with that maniac aboard.

He was fantastic live back in the day.

I had lost track of him for decades. Looks like he managed to cash in pretty well in his later years.

RIP Mojo Nixon. There used to be more genuinely rude, profane, funny people in country. Like 90 years ago. Then there was one glorious loudmouth, the Rickles of Sirius country. Good guy, even when he clobbered me.

Currently blasting the Pleasure Barons live album for the first time in a long while -- always a good time.

Also Rob Morgan of the Squirrels out of Seattle just chatted with me about some hilarious Mojo memories, unsurprisingly the two of them got on great. Apparently Mojo's answering machine message for years was some kid (presumably his own) saying something like "Mojo can't come to the phone right now, he's up in a tree babbling about Elvis" and then in the background you'd hear Mojo yelling "GET OUT OF THE WAY, BOY, I CAN'T SEE THE TV!"

Also, some googling turned up an extensive series of articles about Country Dick from 2015 and in a 'where are they now' section at the end there's an extended bit about what Mojo was up to then that ended with this quote from him. Glad he went out in better fashion:

“My bass player is working on a Mojo documentary. If he ever finishes this thing and it doesn’t suck, we’ll have to go on a little tour and that will end my career. It’s called ‘The Mojo Manifesto.’ Hopefully, it will gets picked up by Netflix, 10 people see it and we’re gonna go do 10 or 20 shows and Show 3 is when I’m gonna die in a motel room in Chapel Hill, or B.C. or Seattle. I’ll be in a motel and say, ‘Honey, I don’t feel so well,’ and drop dead. That will help sales for the movie.”

lol @ answering machine message

Hell of a great post from Dave Alvin just now:

I first met Mojo Nixon when he was an unknown trouble maker in the early 1980s. He threw me a homemade cassette tape of him singing his wonderfully twisted songs while I onstage at a Blasters gig and I was instantly a fan of his bizarre, messy, satirical, rock and roll outlook. Through the following decades, he never failed to make me laugh or amaze me at his committed courage on stage and occasionally he even made me see the world through his blurry, hillbilly anarchist vision. Here''s Mojo with his best friend and beloved partner in crime, Country Dick Montana, performing a song on the legendary and dangerous first Pleasure Barons tour (this song was the section of the set that I refused to be part of for obvious reasons so I'd slip off to have a smoke and a drink with some other band members while Mojo and Dick acted out whatever psychiatrists would call this sort of behavior).Sadly, my two dear, wild old friends are now riding together on on the Death Train that they're singing about in this song. The world is now a whole lot less funny and interesting. Rock In however you define Peace, brother Mojo. See you down the line. Oh and please give Country Dick my love.
