OMG! I Finally Bought A Copy Of Eight Arms To Hold You By Veruca Salt!

I love it. I was just waiting for the PERFECT time to buy it. 50 cents for a casette copy at the thrift store sealed the deal. I had always loved "Volcano Girls" and "Shutterbug" (they did these great on SNL one year), but I always too chicken to buy the album. There needs to be a reappraisal of this fine hard pop and rock elpee. and there is lots of cool rockin' on it. and bob rock too! probably about 50/50 love/hate on ILM i'll bet. check out this dorkus malorkus:

"man that shit is horrible. wasn't that from the album 'eight arms to hold you,' too? Omigosh kill yourselves.

-- Roger Fidelity (blindjimdeat...), November 2nd, 2004."

what a nerdball!

I relistened to this a couple months ago after not hearing it for like 7 years. It became apparent how much better Nina's songs were than Louise's.

It's awesome.

Or-suh-hum.

"When I was 25 / I took a dive" is the nadir of human existance. And it's on American Thighs.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 28 April 2006 17:32 (seventeen years ago) link

American Thighs is better on some days, Eight Arms on others.

"You monkey, you left me" is one of my favorite lines ever though.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 28 April 2006 17:36 (seventeen years ago) link

The big picture of Nina in the liners is pretty classic as I recall. Always spent more time looking at that then listening to the music, which I hated aside from Volcano Girls. Loise Posts sub-Courtney riotgrrl shit was always pretty insufferable to me, and is the reason why i'm not going to be re-evaluating this anytime soon.

OMG American Thighs

is one of my favorite albums.

Eight Arms to Hold You

kinda sucks.

i mean i guess going back, i could maybe get into it if i kitschified it a bit. but American Thighs is really, really blissful.

Surmounter, Sunday, 4 March 2007 05:41 (seventeen years ago) link

what the hell kinda thread revival is this!

scott seward, Sunday, 4 March 2007 05:44 (seventeen years ago) link

i have to say tho, i appreciate your vote of confidence scott, cuz i always like when someone likes something that's let me down

and i'm sure now, this will propel me to listen to Arms again and like, see all the parts i didn't used to like in that different light. still, too forced and heavy for me. reminds me, i need to by American Thighs again.

live shutterbug rules!!! i swear it gives me chills. i don't even know why! it's a mystery. i just think it's so cool.

um...

yeah. i also need to take a look at some other recommendations tomorrow. and like, call my dentist. sundays are weird.

Surmounter, Sunday, 4 March 2007 06:48 (seventeen years ago) link

omg I used to have this album back when I was, like, 10! and I still have it somewhere! I barely remember anything about it!

i remember there was a song called "awesome" that was awesome, and i remember that one of the lyrics to some song appropriated the beatles' "glass onion", and i remember there was a song called "with david bowie" even though i didn't really even know who david bowie was ("some musician from before my time" was the closest I got). and i remember there was a song called "venus man trap" and i knew even then that that was a terrible title.

I should totally give this a listen shouldn't I? I'm excited!

aaron d.g., Sunday, 4 March 2007 08:30 (seventeen years ago) link

hahaha

awesome is pretty good. now that i think about it i feel like there are some fun harmonies on this album. i love that they actually used harmonies.

the david bowie song is eh, and i feel the venus man trap song is like the really heavy number but i'm probably totally wrong.

Surmounter, Sunday, 4 March 2007 14:35 (seventeen years ago) link

i can't believe i was drunk enough to watch, like, an hour of veruca salt live footage. that's drunk! ooooof. there is even new footage! i think it's just louise and all new people. i think i'm having a shameover.

scott seward, Sunday, 4 March 2007 15:05 (seventeen years ago) link

hahaha

and you thought this was a pointless thread revival =P

Surmounter, Sunday, 4 March 2007 15:41 (seventeen years ago) link

one year passes...

The two non-Nina albums aren't bad! I would never recommend them to anyone that wasn't already down w/ the 1st two, though.

David R., Thursday, 24 April 2008 15:42 (sixteen years ago) link

Please note: by "not bad," I mean "fantastic and I say that w/out reservation except I know going OMG over this shit won't fly, so I'm tempering my OMG while out in public."

Maybe I wouldn't go that far, fact or not, but it does sound pretty good to me right now.

Side note: Nina Gordon's solo albums suck out loud.
