I like how Joe Elliot's voice keeps rising starting from about 4:27.

Please do not lock this thread and link to old Hysteria or Def Leppard threads. This song deserves its own thread.

Are the lyrics about begging for a hand job? Until I just read them, I had no idea what most of them were and still struggle to make the connection with some. In Grade 5, I used to wonder what it meant to "armageddon it". Figured it had something to do with destroying your opposition.

Sundar (sundar), Monday, 12 June 2006 22:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Hooks:

1) sleazy intro riff
2) spacetastic guitar effects as the riff builds
3) snotty, teasing vocal hook in the first verse
4) vocal gets louder, tenser about 0:50
5) "You can't stop/Go rock it..."
6) second (3rd?) pre-chorus: "Hey! Are you getting it?"
7) "Ooh, come get it from me" building tension when we expect the chorus
8) chorus: Everything goes soft and lush
9) a sudden halt and stomp "But are you getting it?!"
10) the guitar solo is a collection of hooks
11) post-solo lead/chorus vocal back-and-forth
12) exaggerated "Are you getting it?" tease before one more chorus
13) the soaring voice stuff
14) break for one last riff around 4:38

Numbers 5 to 8 = love.

LC (Damian), Monday, 12 June 2006 22:40 (seventeen years ago) link

Di to thread, of course. Again! As it were.

There is nothing wrong with this song.

My argument in brief -- each verse is T. Rex, lead-in to chorus plus most of chorus itself is Sweet, the title part is Gary Glitter. All seamlessly recombined and late eighties glossed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 12 June 2006 22:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Hey, remember the 80's when bands like Def Leppard and Bon Jovi could get away with having the EXACT SAME VIDEO for all their singles?

I preferred "Pour Some Sugar On Me", both as a song and for the sleazier sexual metaphors.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Monday, 12 June 2006 22:48 (seventeen years ago) link

haha yeah here's "Pour Some Sugar On Me".

Sundar (sundar), Monday, 12 June 2006 22:53 (seventeen years ago) link

I saw them on VH1 Classic or something not too long ago on this exact tour with that stage and everything. It was a home vhs video, I guess, but it wasn't overdubbed and there were no quick cuts like in these videos. They had to be the dullest band to watch. I wanted to watch it out of morbid curiosity, but it got too painful after about 15 minutes. They had a really big stage that looked like Tron and they were barely moving, definitely not utilizing the space. Their music sounded both canned and non-perfect, which is interesting. Very wimpy-sounding. I wonder what it actually sounded like live in the place, though.

Uri Frendimein (Uri Frendimein), Monday, 12 June 2006 23:56 (seventeen years ago) link

it's a little disappointing that they didn't really pursue the Armageddon/sex analogies beyond the pun of the title. That would've been fun. Maybe some lyrics about getting busy in the midst of an apocalyptic, Revelations-type scenario.

erklie (erklie), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 00:02 (seventeen years ago) link

the best def leppard song is still 'photograph', but 'armageddon it' is #2. i've gotta spin both of these next time i DJ

gear (gear), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 00:04 (seventeen years ago) link

1) I cut a pair of jeans to look like Joe Elliott's in this video.
2) I forced my dad to buy the tape for me at K-Mart, and the girl at the counter didn't know how to take the plastic thing off, so I ended up completely destroying the tape case trying to get into it with a screwdriver and sewing scissors at home.
3) IT WAS TOTALLY WORTH IT.

Eric Harvey (eric marathonpacks), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 00:19 (seventeen years ago) link

And, yeah, second-best DL chorus after 'Photograph.' Pretty much just sutured on to the verse like they bought it from some guy on the way to the studio, and it could have been just as great on like 50 other 80s hair metal songs, if given the chance. Oh, if it were only given the chance.

Eric Harvey (eric marathonpacks), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 00:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, and the "c'mon Steve, get it" part is pretty Sweet-ish, too, right? "Ready Steve?"

Okay, I'm through.

Eric Harvey (eric marathonpacks), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 00:25 (seventeen years ago) link

It's not my favorite Hysteria single, but it'll do.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 01:13 (seventeen years ago) link

each verse is T. Rex

This is pretty much what I wanted to say.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 02:58 (seventeen years ago) link

I'll take Animal or Hysteria, but what Alfred said.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 03:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Clark/Collen-era Leppard = Classic
Wearing your own band t-shirts in the video = Not Classic

Edward Bax (EdBax), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 19:47 (seventeen years ago) link

No no no, that was totally classic! Not even Spinal Tap did that, did they?

Marmot 4-Tay (marmotwolof), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 21:19 (seventeen years ago) link

7. Women
6. Love Bites
5. Animal
4. Rocket
3. Hysteria
2. Armageddon It
1. Pour Some Sugar on Me

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 23:10 (seventeen years ago) link

"Animal" so far down, Good Dr.? I'm sad.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 00:55 (seventeen years ago) link

The intro to "Animal" is the shit.

Marmot 4-Tay (marmotwolof), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 01:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Here's a tougher one for you all, maybe -- name your favorite NON-single from Hysteria. ("Run Riot" by a hair over "Gods of War," but it's VERRRRRY close.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 01:01 (seventeen years ago) link

"Run Riot" for me too.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 01:03 (seventeen years ago) link

"Gods of War" for me, but "Run Riot" is close behind.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 01:06 (seventeen years ago) link

I like "Run Riot" because it is of course The Second Great Fake Insurrection Rock Song of the Holy UK Trilogy (along with Sweet's "Teenage Rampage" and the Prodigy's "Firestarter"). I like "Gods of War" because it is frickin' majestic at the start in a way that Black Sabbath would appreciate without actually sounding like them at all, and, of course, That Ending.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 01:09 (seventeen years ago) link

the intro to "Excitable"

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 01:14 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, the 13 year-old Johnny Fever was pretty into that intro.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 01:19 (seventeen years ago) link

"Run Riot" is pretty much the best song on Hysteria

Matthew OMalley (Matt-O), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 03:06 (seventeen years ago) link

"Tear It Down" is the best NON-single from Hysteria.

And yeah, I mean the original b-side, not the later re-recording.

Edward Bax (EdBax), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 11:19 (seventeen years ago) link

each verse is T. Rex, lead-in to chorus plus most of chorus itself is Sweet, the title part is Gary Glitter.

The song also sounds like Cheap Trick - no?

morris pavilion (samjeff), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 19:44 (seventeen years ago) link

I'd tend to say more Cheap Trick knew all THOSE influences too. ("Elo Kiddies" as a good example.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 20:27 (seventeen years ago) link

ten years pass...

Yeah, but are you brexin' it?
(I'm a-brexin' it!)
Ooh, really brexin' it?
(Yes, I'm a-brexin' it!)

joe elliott, Friday, 24 June 2016 18:32 (seven years ago) link

...'cause the brexit's yet to come?

oh how life's relish stains my cummerbund (how's life), Friday, 24 June 2016 19:03 (seven years ago) link
