am i the only one around here to enjoy this song? deeply silly cosmische earth wind and fire/pedro bell afrofuturist hiphop/r&b from some guy who i think is outta goodie mob. probably not half as fun without the bellbottom trousers and pink afro wigs (i.e. the visual video shtick), but i like it.

okay, so he's not exactly on some kind of sun ra shit as far as creativity goes, but jesus, it's a big black guy in a white feather mowhawk & a preachers outfit. you just don't get that kind of entertainment value for your money from so so def.

jess, Sunday, 31 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The video is fucking great. I could watch it all day long. The song goes perfectly with it etc.

That said, the song by itself isn't as satisfying. After seeing the video I immediately downloaded it and... neh. Futuristic-pastiche-funk doesn't work without the mohawk.

I heartily recommend the new Big Tymers single, "Still Fly." It's great.

And the Lil Bow Wow video is just as good as the Cee Lo video. So So Def rocks, except for the omnipresence of JD. He's like a bridge troll.

An omnipresent bridge troll.

I actually like most all of the (forthcoming) album. Lotsa folks hated World Party a few years back, but it still sounds good to me, apostate that I am.

I actually listen to World Party more than the other 2 GM albums I have. I haven't heard "Closet Freak" though.

I cannot believe this is the guy who appeared on "Beautiful Skin". granted D-40 alludes that his shittiness wasn't a surprise to all but my God, it was bad enough when he got charged w/ the initial felony, but to now wade in the moral relativism that he's wading in on top of that = fuck this guy forever.

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 2 September 2014 22:53 (nine years ago) link

srs question, but how far did homophobia permeate in hip-hop in the 80s and 90s? I ask because obviously, it was all over the hardcore street rap, but even the socially conscious folks like Chuck D made embarrassing comments about homosexuality in public forums (if I recall, the latter said homosexuals were 'men who hadn't been given what they needed by a woman' or something equally ridiculous).

Not defending Cee-Lo's comments at all (ffs, it's the 21st century, asshole!), but was wondering if this was a problem with other more conscious/alternative rap back in the day...the homophobia always bummed the fuck out of me in rap.

literally cannot think of a single act that said anything remotely pro-gay, and pretty much everyone used "faggot" derogatorily at least once

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 2 September 2014 23:07 (nine years ago) link

not as true in the 80s, I remember reading an article about Whodini where they blamed increasing homophobia (even though they were straight, but their style became seen as "gay") as part of why they went out of style

http://www.browardpalmbeach.com/2007-05-17/music/freaks-come-out-at-night/full/

"My man [Ecstasy] used to come out on stage wearing leather shorts and cowboy boots and a hat," Adler says. "He was beautiful and built, and he was going to let you admire how cut he was. But when you look at those pictures, it looks dated at best. And at worst, it looks fruity... unmanly. Hip-hop is hypermasculine. And here you got songs like 'The Freaks Come Out at Night' that expressed sexuality in too overt a way to be taken serious for any length of time. The lines of hetero- and homosexuality were blurred. I think by the end, people just didn't get it."

The Reverend, Tuesday, 2 September 2014 23:36 (nine years ago) link

so #amiwrong or did cee lo admit to rape in those tweets

le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 23:47 (nine years ago) link

he had a case where he allegedly drugged and raped a woman and then he tweets that unconscious woman aren't "with" you so they can't consent and therefore fucking them is fine?????

le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 23:49 (nine years ago) link

isn't he basically saying "yeah i raped that woman who i knocked out"

i don't see any other way to read this

le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 23:49 (nine years ago) link

'no contest'

n. in criminal law, a defendant's plea in court that he/she will not contest the charge of a particular crime, also called nolo contendere. While technically not an admission of guilt for commission of the crime, the judge will treat a plea of "no contest" as such an admission and proceed to find the defendant guilty as charged. A "no contest" plea is often made in cases in which there is also a possible lawsuit for damages by a person injured by the criminal conduct (such as reckless driving, assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault), because it cannot be used in the civil lawsuit as an admission of fault. "No contest" is also used where there has been a "plea bargain" in which the defendant does not want to say he/she is guilty but accepts the sentence recommended by the prosecutor in exchange for not contesting the charge (which is often reduced to a lesser crime). It is standard practice for the judge to ask either the attorneys or the defendant, "Is there a factual basis for the plea?" before accepting it and finding the defendant guilty.

FKATlovestoFU better (Spottie), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 23:52 (nine years ago) link

he's just pulling some OJ "If I Did It" shit, where he's saying 'y'all I'm totally innocent and all but uhhhh I don't think *this* is rape anyway'.

Pairing his comments with the allegations and him pleading 'no contest' instead of 'not guilty' is all I need to know to assume he fuckin' did it and lucked out w/ the evidence being insufficient.

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 2 September 2014 23:55 (nine years ago) link

so he *basically* admitted to it in court and then went and defended his actions on twitter

seems like an admitted rapist to me

le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 23:56 (nine years ago) link

yeah p much

FKATlovestoFU better (Spottie), Tuesday, 2 September 2014 23:57 (nine years ago) link

It's not the 'no contest' by itself. It's that his original plea was "not guilty", and, realizing he faced four years in jail if convicted, he amended his plea to get the lesser charge of probation. *that's* what says he's guilty.

Neanderthal, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 00:00 (nine years ago) link

article about his original plea to the ecstacy charge: http://www.theguardian.com/music/2013/oct/22/cee-lo-green-pleads-not-guilty-charge-ecstasy

by then the rape charge had been dismissed outright.
