Moxy Fruvous - Have you heard of them?

Now on "touring hiatus" (i.e. they've done bugger all since about 2000/01 ish)

Have you heard of them? I was introduced to them in 2004ish. They're a Canadian folk/rock/whatever band. Bit zany, but very cool.

Hast thou but been introduced to these (former)-giants of Canadian pop/rock/etc ?

Yes.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 19:54 (seventeen years ago) link

For my sins, yes. (I haven't listened to this album in years and kinda don't want to.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 19:56 (seventeen years ago) link

national embarassment

they're big in upstate NY

I used to go and see them way back when. They had a slick live act, busked a lot, could take requests for just about any song, and were a lot of fun.

That review by Ned nails it perfectly.

I used to listen to them in like 98 or 99. And I listened to TMBG and Barenaked Ladies then, too.

I saw them open for Nick Heyward at the Whiskey in Hollywood in 93, my first real concert!! Also, the last time I went to the Whiskey.

Whenever someone listens to Moxy Fruvous, God kills a Canadian.

Okay, Taking Sides: Moxy Fruvous vs Broken Social Scene.

fun live, way worse than BNL in the studio.

I wrote about the same album that Ned did!

One of my co-workers is still a Moxy Fruvous fanatic and often wears a concert T-shirt to work. I have cruelly mocked his Moxy fandom for about four years. To his credit, he continues to wear the shirts. I do draw the line, though, when he cues the Fruvous on his iTunes.

four years pass...

Just "discovered" this band last year, kind of feel like I missed out in a way. I just picked up Bargainville is for some reason it makes me feel pretty nostalgic; don't know why since I'd never heard any of their music before. It just sounds like something I would have really connected with when I was like 13 or 14. I'm 24 now. I mean it's total 90's nostalgia anyway, referencing Walter Cronkite, Pat Buchanan, and Clinton, but there is something else behind it that I can't really identify. That said some of the songs are incredible - "Stuck in the 90's" and "Laika" are total classic. I picked up their follow up album Wood and couldn't remember a damn thing about it. Are any of their other albums worth picking up?

frogbs, Monday, 28 February 2011 14:57 (thirteen years ago) link

Was big on them back in high school, but haven't had any desire to dig out their CDs since. If you like Bargainville, check out You Will Go To the Moon, that was my favorite album of theirs. It's goofy like Bargainville, but the instrumentation is a lot more fleshed-out and interesting. Wood and Thornhill are both snoozers, they really don't play to what the band is good at.

One member of Moxy Fruvous, Jian Ghomeishi, is now one of the most important radio hosts in Canada. (He hosts Q, the CBC's flagship arts/culture show.)

sean gramophone, Monday, 28 February 2011 16:12 (thirteen years ago) link

(He is not well liked.)

sean gramophone, Monday, 28 February 2011 16:12 (thirteen years ago) link

why is that? is he just lame or actually controversial? because this is probably the band least likely to ever say the word "fuck" in one of their songs

frogbs, Monday, 28 February 2011 17:57 (thirteen years ago) link

xxp: He's not? I don't really like him, but I kinda got the impression I was in the minority.

The former.

kate78, Monday, 28 February 2011 18:58 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah but don't canadians love that sort of personality?

frogbs, Monday, 28 February 2011 19:11 (thirteen years ago) link

There's a certain type of person who really connects with CBC radio and those folks really like him. Certainly I know lots of people that love his show. I know lots of people who are in their 40s and 50s though - the target audience. I've never heard anyone saying anything negative about him so I really don't understand where that statement above comes from.

i purely know of Moxy Fruvous as a band that only really hardcore They Might Be Giants fans ever seem to be into and their quirkiness/wackiness grates on me in a way TMBG's rarely does

i have heard of moxy fruvous

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 28 February 2011 21:40 (thirteen years ago) link

There is a significantly worse Canadian band in this sub-TMBG genre - the Arrogant Worms. If anything can make Moxy Fruvous look good it is those guys.

everything, Monday, 28 February 2011 21:47 (thirteen years ago) link

i would take the Arrogant Worms over Moxy any day. and this Ghomeishi info has just blown my mind.

Can you post a link to the best Arrogant Worms song? Everything I've ever heard by them is obnoxious but I'm willing to give them another chance.

everything, Monday, 28 February 2011 22:21 (thirteen years ago) link

My reference to Jian's reputation refers to the cultural community which Jian reports upon, not the audience he is speaking to.

sean gramophone, Monday, 28 February 2011 22:24 (thirteen years ago) link

i find jian deplorable. he's a solid interviewer, but he's just not critical of anything. his tastes are so MOR and if something strikes his fancy he'll just go on and on about how great it is.

borntohula, Monday, 28 February 2011 22:35 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah that's about what I expected from him. BUT before you criticize him, on average how "hard-hitting" are Canadian radio hosts on average anyway?

frogbs, Monday, 28 February 2011 22:39 (thirteen years ago) link

Ha, I loved "Stuck in the 90s" when it came out. I can't listen all the way through now, sorry.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 28 February 2011 22:47 (thirteen years ago) link

I disliked Moxy Fruvous but think Jian is a good host. His endless sympathy for people comes off very well toward artists who are oftentimes met with cynicism in other quarters. He teased out a good interview from Vampire Weekend, for example. And handled himself admirably against Billy Bob Thornton's outright hostility.

i would say george strombo has a better presence and asks some deeper questions, although sometimes he sidesteps them entirely. he's a bit inconsistent that way, but i like his personality a lot better than ghomeshi.

borntohula, Monday, 28 February 2011 23:35 (thirteen years ago) link

gross. the only one i can tolerate is "the drinking song" and even then, it's far better when covered by miscellaneous celtic pub bands than their own version (and it helps that you be drunk yourself.)

Does a boring general affairs/entertainment show on Saturday mornings on CBC. It's like the Globe and Mail Review section in audio form.

one year passes...

I now have their live album. For some reason I thought there would be a bunch of new stuff but it turns out that this here is a band that has track indexes for stage banter. I was hoping they actually had a song called "Kasparov vs. Deep Blue". What struck me about the whole thing was how incredibly beautiful/tearjearking "The Drinking Song" is compared to, oh, every other song they've ever done besides maybe "Fly".

Question: in "King of Spain," do you imagine that the singer in fact is the King of Spain as he claims, or are we meant to take it as an ingratiating deception/Mitty-esque fantasy of the humble pizza-worker, Zamboni driver and turf-vacuumer?

frogbs, Wednesday, 14 October 2015 17:52 (eight years ago) link

Well, clearly that is a fantasy to which no average Joe could possibly aspire. Let's be realistic here.

Possibly, although one doubts he hauled all his VHS-C cassettes out of the royal chambers at his palatial palace. Likely, his peasant friend would still have them.
