i'd kind of bored of them by Phantom Power and I feel like any POX i came up with would be too Fully Completely / Day for Night / TatH heavy. am listen to Road Apples right now for the first time in a very very long time and am surprised how much my old favs from that one are still holding up. the newest one hasn't resonated with me so far, but i'm going to gave it another chance.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 18 August 2016 19:17 (seven years ago) link

if it weren't for day for night phantom power would be their best record imo

now i feel less bad about how my POX is shaping up!

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 18 August 2016 19:27 (seven years ago) link

hahaha don't get me wrong the fully completely/day for night/trouble axis completely summarizes this band. but I've kept up with them throughout their career and my favorite stuff is the parts on the later albums where they darkly stretch out

"escape" is imo one of the best songs of all time. if they play it tonight I'll lose it

Based on Fully Completely, Day for Night, Music @ Work, and radio singles:

New Orleans Is Sinking
Fifty Mission Cap
My Music at Work
Nautical Disaster
Locked in the Trunk of a Car
Putting Down
Tiger the Lion
Bobcaygeon
Blow at High Dough
Lake Fever

40% of that is from Music @ Work, which probably means I should look into more of the later albums.

Sorry, I never listened to this band. Figured if they were any good the good folks at Other Music would have let me know. *ducks*

Deneb on Ice (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 21 August 2016 13:41 (seven years ago) link

Although they do get a substantial mention on the Other Music subboard of a Pearl Jam message board.

Sorry wrong thread.

By which I mean I should have posted on the other Tragically Hip thread.

Deneb on Ice (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 21 August 2016 18:58 (seven years ago) link

I can't do this yet because I think I really favour their post-Phantom albums a great deal, and I need to listen to them more to really figure it out. Gord's lyrics get better and better and I like them more as they become less blues and more something-else... "What Blue" is a song I'd take over anything off Fully Completely

"Escape Is At Hand For The Travelling Man" would prob be my #1 tho

fgti, Sunday, 21 August 2016 19:46 (seven years ago) link

"Escape..." reminds me of an indie band from the late 90s but I'm not sure which one. The Dismemberment Plan? Maybe just a general "mid- to late 90s indie rock" vibe?

Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Wednesday, 24 August 2016 20:56 (seven years ago) link

You're not thinking of Interpol, are you? Their vocalist sounds a lot like Gord sometimes. Always thought so.

Manitobiloba (Kim), Wednesday, 24 August 2016 22:20 (seven years ago) link

for some reason i recall 54-40 having a song similar to the intro of 'escape'

F♯ A♯ (∞), Wednesday, 24 August 2016 22:37 (seven years ago) link

Hm, don't think it was the Plan.

Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Friday, 26 August 2016 02:02 (seven years ago) link

Maybe one of those others.

Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Friday, 26 August 2016 02:02 (seven years ago) link

Broken Social Scene maybe?

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 26 August 2016 03:37 (seven years ago) link

not 90's but it was the first thing to pop into my head.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 26 August 2016 03:38 (seven years ago) link

anyways, my X:

Ahead by a Century
Grace, Too
Courage
Long Time Running
Fifty-Mission Cap
So Hard Done By
My Music At Work
Lionized
Lake Fever
Thugs

(really had a hard time choosing between Thugs, Locked In The Trunk ... , Greasy Jungle and Wheat Kings)

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 26 August 2016 03:43 (seven years ago) link

ya i was thinking cause = time by bss

it's got a similar vibe (drums and bass groove)

F♯ A♯ (∞), Friday, 26 August 2016 18:42 (seven years ago) link

courage (for hugh maclennan)
wheat kings
fifty mission cap
locked in the trunk of a car
at the hundredth meridian
bobcaygeon
fireworks
nautical disaster
grace too
ahead by a century

this is really hard. fully completely was my intro to them so my list leans pretty hard to that album

sofatruck, Saturday, 27 August 2016 12:44 (seven years ago) link

I can see a BSS connection in the rhythm section, yeah. Phantom Power turned out to be the first one I bought since the concert. (Already had copies of FC, DfN, and M@W). I've been playing it a lot.

Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Wednesday, 31 August 2016 13:48 (seven years ago) link

Heard on the radio they pulled a Beatles (or Drake, or whoever): all 17 albums are on Billboard's Canadian album chart. I don't know what that actually means these days, but it sounds impressive.
