i think he's a bit old for "full-on BP mode," as much as it pains me to say, but this is good enough for now.

This week Harvey's getting around to touring his solo album from a year or two ago, with Thomas Wydler and James Johnston in his band.

This is so much better than his last 3 or 4 albums. Who'd have thought it?

did you care for The Birthday Party?

no. i thought TBP had some interesting-to-provocative lines (e.g., "oh! god! please let me die beneath her fists"), but the music left me cold.

i didn't give TBP much of a chance, to be fair.

i know it's probably only me, but i see a very slow and painful decline in Cave's releases ever since TBP hiatus.
(though Grinderman are better than anything he did in the last 20 years)

yea my take on the grinderman stuff from the last album was like 'oh good he's back to something he's better at, well kinda'. but it's like he can't shake that literary monkey off his back? and yeah i really prefer the raucous jokester side of nick and i'm glad he's mining that or something like it again but maaaan do i miss rowland.

which = basically i am unrealistically wanting this to be the birthday party and setting myself up for disappointment.

I can't quite fathom anyone liking Grinderman better than the Birthday Party.

I've been surprised/amused to see some fairly huffy reviews in The Wire and NME about Grinderman's "boring misogyny." Does one really need to be familiar with his body of work going back to The Birthday Party to appreciate the humor in Grinderman?

yeah, cave is one of those guys who just owns the stage. saw him w/ the bad seeds a couple years back and he killed. would definitely go see grinderman if they were playing near me.

Grinderman 2 might be my favorite album of the year. Loud, obnoxious, funny, scary, catchy, noisy.

It's the sound of frustrated middle-aged men giving it their all one last time. That's fresher than the umpteenth love song from where I stand...

yeah, it might be my favorite of the year, too (along with gil scott heron; good year for middle-aged angst, i guess).

there's such a ferocious, menacing sexual vibe over the whole album. it's like steely dan got turned down by every girl they hit on in the gaucho era, and turned aggressive/borderline violent.

gotta see if someone nominated worm tamer for track of the year. i forgot to, but it's in my top five for 2010.

can anyone tell me if the RMX EP is worth getting?
