I think he'll be quite good when he settles into it. Last night he was on a par with the average episode of Buzzcocks, ie faintly amusing and totally forgettable.

Bit of a guilty pleasure, this show. The missus has always quite liked it but I usually wince through it as the celebs trot out their scripted witticisms and, in the Lamarr era, there was also the nasty, relentless sexism.

But last night was good - Oddie was terrifically awkward and I enjoyed Amstell listing the current Radio 1 DJs..."it's just not good enough, is it?" You could imagine that being a Lamarr line but, in keeping with his sour schtick, it wouldn't have had much impact.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 10 November 2006 15:41 (seventeen years ago) link

relentless sexism is carried on by merely being a sausage party last night. inc the line up.

"sausage party"!

I meant misogyny, really.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 10 November 2006 15:50 (seventeen years ago) link

have they changed the truly awful theme music?

benrique (Enrique), Friday, 10 November 2006 15:50 (seventeen years ago) link

it is a show about pop and rock = there has to be SOME misogyny, right?

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Friday, 10 November 2006 15:54 (seventeen years ago) link

They seem to have remixed/reworked the theme. The effect is similar to the shift from series 1 to series 2 of Space: 1999.

OK, Amy Winehouse, car crash telly par excellence (but also amusing in parts, e.g. "I don't think it's the difference between integrity and selling out with Ben Elton, I just think he's a wanker").

Tonight's show: bringing sexismback, sadly. Amstell, you Crossed A Line. Tsk.

How much of the Amy Winehouse stuff was shown? They had problems in the edit as she seemed to spit every minute or so, mostly over the monitors in the desks.

raw sweaters annoying brother (raw sweaters annoying brother), Friday, 17 November 2006 02:36 (seventeen years ago) link

She spat once (because it would be rude to make gurgling noises, er, yes), there was also a threat that she was going to spit on Amstell as well - she lurched forward out of her seat towards him as his back was turned talking to the other team, then it cut really abruptly to her back in her seat and Amstell asking her "were you going to spit on me", then cut again to him cuddling her.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 17 November 2006 09:50 (seventeen years ago) link

why all the spitting? i didn't see it.

benrique (Enrique), Friday, 17 November 2006 09:53 (seventeen years ago) link

The best bit was where Amstell suggested she was on crack and she blurted out "Do I look like Russell Brand?" a split second before considering her towering birds nest coiffure, artful dishevellment, general lairiness and realising that, actually, she did - quite a lot.

Actually, I think SA was more sexist towards Penny Smith. Everyone on this episode seemed slaughtered - I'm amazed it even made it to air.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 17 November 2006 10:23 (seventeen years ago) link

God, yeah, that Russell Brand bit was good.

enrique, all the spitting because Winehouse was quite blatantly out of her fucking tree.

haha, I forgot:

Amstell: "why don't you work with someone nice like Katie Melua"
Winehouse: "I'd rather have cat AIDS"

I watched the repeat last night and it was very enjoyable. So thanks to all for tipping me off, albeit accidentally. Winehouse makes a far more affable drunk than most and Amstell seems to have grown into the role quite nicely. I now prefer him to Lamarr. It is true that it is a bit odd having the same scriptwriters, or scriptwriters following exactly the same brief.

I also watched The Sharon Tate Show beforehand, and found it very funny in parts.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 11 January 2007 15:36 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm sorry, but this is actually hillarious:

In the offending passage from Chantelle's book, Living the Dream, the reality star described a photo shoot where she wore clothes from Marks and Spencer.

"I've always loved M&S but it has always been too expensive for me," she wrote, adding that the session made her feel "very posh and upmarket".

I can imagine that sounding pretty offensive & snide coming out of Amstell's silver spooned gob somehow. Class war!

But you don't really go on unless you're sure you have some kind of comeback ability do you :P

fru the magic of youtube i've been able to see some of this, mostly the recent ones but some of the older ones as well. all i knew about the show was mark s calling it self-regarding somewhere (Noise Piece maybe?).

i know this is less of a big thing in the uk, but it was refreshing to see a game show/reality thing where the "contest" is obviously irrelevant and treated as such. i don't think a show like this would work here, for that, and also cos you couldn't get US c-listers to show up and have some dick make fun of them, while doing a bs quiz about music. so, tired as the show may be, i liked it!

on the evidence, amstell is funnier than lamarr.

amy winehouse was funnier than anyone on the show, ever. better comic timing, more charismatic. and she was tanked.

british indie is truly dire.

dale winton was pretty funny, too.

fair points all

blueski, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 17:43 (sixteen years ago) link

When are the new episodes starting again? Any official word? Last few years they've started end of October or so.

The best recent episode of the show, and the episode I direct people to when I want to get them to start watching, is the ep with Donny Tourette and Noel Fielding.

I think Amstell > Lamarr too.

blueski, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 19:20 (sixteen years ago) link

ha yes "donny tourette"! couldn't believe he existed.

the other big uk/us difference: the cruelty that they visit on the extras in those lineups is pretty breathtaking. it'd never work here. a picture is fair game, but someone standing in your presence?!

gff, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 19:30 (sixteen years ago) link

lamarr was never good and by the end (ie 1998-2006) unwatchable.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 20:00 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm old enough to remember MLamarr *was* good and occasionally good in later episodes (the one with Sparks on was brilliant)...

Amstell gets as good as he gives, and so is better.

Man, when a show lasts 28 seasons, calling it a cancellation sounds so cold. It's just ... done. Nice job, guys.
