does anyone ever go there? I went to see Morgan Geist dj there once and it was deader than dead. was I just there too early? (1AM)

a year or two ago i saw geist and jesrani dj at Love. it was pretty packed, but not uncomfortably so.

tony conrad schnitzler (sanskrit), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 18:11 (seventeen years ago) link

I haven't heard the new one because it hasn't hit vinyl yet. The first two Escort records are pretty much the cream of the crop as far as nu-disco goes. So yes, definitely look into it.

the B side of that is the jam, imo (Karawane)

dmr (Renard), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 19:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Why can't I get these any place besides turntable lab? Shipping from there to NC more than doubles the price of the order for one record. How can UPS shipping on one record be $9.44? I loved the first two but haven't heard this one.

I think some of the parties do well at Love but who knows. I haven't been back since the first times Morgan and Dar did it and the Alexander Robotnik gig.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 19:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh Dear,
As the originator of this thread, I'm a bit mortified at having misspelled the title of the single. It's "A Bright New Life" and is still very much the shit.

Any word on whether theres an album in the works?

le_buboroque (le_buboroque), Thursday, 25 January 2007 14:29 (seventeen years ago) link

Awesome! Thanks for the heads up . . . they've got "A Bright New Life" up on their Myspace. Here's hoping they'll play a gig w/Kelley Polar . . . in New Zealand. Sigh.

Copypasta:

ESCRT003 -- A Bright New Life b/w All That She Is featuring Morgan Geist Edit (Vinyl: February 1, 2007)

A Bright New Life (“akarui seikatsu”) is the latest disco anthem from Brooklyn’s Escort. It’s a sardonic take on getting ahead, featuring Zena Kitt’s powerful lead vocals, a horn section led by Jon Natchez, strings by Caleb Burhans, and absolutely massive drums and percussion by Ernesto Abreau, Chauncey Yearwood, and Ben Herson. Features two additional edits for DJs, including one by Metro Area’s Morgan Geist. The flip, All That She Is, is synthesizer-driven, cinematic late-night disco. It’s quixotic falsetto refrain will delight and perplex listeners. Very enthusiastic support from Trevor Jackson, Ewan Pearson, Prince Language, and more!

Escort Remixes in 2007

Look for Escort remixes of "It's All True" by Tracey Thorn (Virgin), "Seaside Weekend" by Antena (Permanent Vacation), and "French Girl" by Turbo Crystal (Tiny Sticks).

Anyone heard these yet?

etc (esskay), Thursday, 25 January 2007 23:26 (seventeen years ago) link

i have the Tracey Thorn mix and it's fantastic. the original, produced by ewan pearson and darshan jesrani is pure 80's bliss but the Escort mix tweaks it enough to increase the danceablilty. i think they took out darshan's cowbells though, foolishly. if you google around you should be able to find a link. it's similar enough to the original to keep the retro vibe, but different enough to be intersting on it's own. sort of the equivelent of an 80's type "Extened Dance Mix".

new 12" out today says Escort's Dan Balis...

Hey all,

First, on behalf of the whole gang, wanted to say thanks to all of you
who
made our show this weekend so much fun, especially the Rub and the rest
of
the folks behind Shirts and Skins!

Second, our new 12" ships today! Juno (http://www.juno.co.uk/) already
has
it in the UK, and Turntable Lab
(http://www.turntablelab.com/vinyl/0/0/17448.html) has it in the US.
We're
really excited for this one to drop. Traxsource
(http://www.traxsource.com)
has 320k mp3s for the digitally-inclined (iTunes shortly.)

Here's all the details with a fair amount of hype sprinkled in for good
measure:

Title: A Bright New Life b/w All That She Is 12²
Label: Escort Records
Cat: ESCRT003
A. A Bright New Life (6:32)
A Bright New Life Dub (6:32)
B. All That She Is (4:45)
A Bright New Life Morgan Geist Re-edit (5:19)

A Bright New Life (³akarui seikatsu²) is the latest disco anthem from
Brooklyn¹s Escort. It¹s a sardonic take on getting ahead, featuring
Zena
Kitt¹s powerful lead vocals, a horn section led by Jon Natchez,
strings by
Caleb Burhans, and absolutely massive drums and percussion by Ernesto
Abreau, Chauncey Yearwood, and Ben Herson. Features two additional
edits for
DJs, including one by Metro Area¹s Morgan Geist. The flip, All That
She Is,
is synthesizer-driven, cinematic late-night disco. It¹s quixotic
falsetto
refrain will delight and perplex listeners.

³Amazing! Genuine, live, musical...Puts all to shame and really sets
the
standard.² - Trevor Jackson

"Their best yet." - Prince Language

"The breathy detachment and defiant strength of Zena Kitt's rebel yawn
embody this brilliant song's hopelessness about its own power, about
art's
capacity to transcend drab reality, and its pessimism about escapism."
- Pitchfork Media

"The songwriting¹s smart, the stylized diction is perfect, the
instrumental
buildups and breakdowns are taut, no note¹s out of place, no smirk¹s
in
sight. Just awesome."
- Stylus Magazine

"Flanked by blazing horns and lush string arrangements, singer Zena
Kitt's
lead vocals sound like a ghost haunting Studio 54." - The Washington
Post

Hey Dan who did the versions of The Letter and For your Love that you played at Union Pool? Thanks for the good time

mizzzell (mizzzell), Thursday, 1 February 2007 18:16 (seventeen years ago) link

I always open with those songs when there's a "rock" crowd! actually, first few songs at Union Pool were:

Roxy Music-Love is the Drug
Kongas-Gimme Some Loving
Queen Samantha-The Letter
Chilly-For Your Love

that last one got really popular last year and has been bootlegged/edited a few times, so should be easy to find.

as mentioned on noise board, I'm djing back there again, I think saturday Feb. 24th. Just me, alone again. I'm gonna pull out more post-punk and mix with the disco.

Thanks for coming and glad you liked.

s1ocki, Friday, 20 July 2007 20:00 (sixteen years ago) link

Ok this is now officially single of the year. Maybe it's because I've been up for 24 hours but I actually started to choke up at this video. There may not be a better evocation of what's it like to dance to disco in a club, the overwhelming feeling of being thrown amongst layers of colorful strangers and lights. On a roller rink somewhere, Debbie Deb is proud.

Get some sleep Kevin, this isn't even the best Escort single of the year.

Display Name, Saturday, 21 July 2007 02:41 (sixteen years ago) link

this is even better than that clip of lenoard nimoy sync'd up with 'pay to cum' by bad brains!

i don't think i've heard a bad escort track yet. anyone caught them live?

haitch, Saturday, 21 July 2007 04:24 (sixteen years ago) link

but just what is the best escort single? I'd vote for Love in Indigo for dayz. And frankly, a lot of their tracks don't get me incredibly moist, just slightly damp (examples: all through the night, bright new life).

Romeo Jones, Sunday, 22 July 2007 02:29 (sixteen years ago) link

I would say that Starlight, Love In Indigo, and Bright New Life are all better than All Through The Night. All Through The Night is probably my least favorite track of theirs. I just hope the album is as good as the first three singles.

I feel like a lot of people missed out on the 12" that Dan Balis of Escort did with Darshan Jesrani of Metro Area. Together they recorded as Arcade Lover. It's a damn good record:

There are remixes from Greg Wilson and Ewan Pearson, but I'm digging the 12" mix the most.

At least three "Where did they lift/adapt that from?" moments, which is about average for them.

i think its actually a pretty well done pastiche, but the cocaine thing is kinda offputting to me in the way omar's been talking abt in the mexico thread on ile -- not that im saying hed find it the same way, but repurposing those dillinger lyrics for hipster-disco club nights, ehhh
