By Nina:

Funkier than a mosquitos tweeter & See-Line Woman

But let's be honest, nothing will ever match "Sinnerman."

matt2, Thursday, 22 February 2007 19:45 (seventeen years ago) link

i'm not sure, i think i prefer ....Mosquitos Tweeter. it's not as feirce, admittedly.

"My Sweet Lord/Today is a Killer" is in a similar vein.

Nina's "Wild Is the Wind" is one of the greatest recordings of the 20th century. But I'm not sure what attributes of "Sinnerman" you're seeking more of.

By Nina - definitely "Black Gold", "Lilac Wine"

Lilac Wine is nothing like Sinnerman, really.

"My Sweet Lord/ Today..." is a good call. probably my favourite Nina track.

Sinnerman sounds even better now after seeing the end of Inland Empire.

Yeah, "My Sweet Lord / Today is a Killer" is a good call in that it has similar arrangements, though it's more... subdued, not as frenetic. For me, though, nothing tops the sense of abandonment and urgency in "Sinnerman." Nina's version makes Peter Tosh's/Bob Marley's versions ("Downpresser Man") seem brittle in comparison.

Turangalila, Friday, 23 February 2007 04:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Granted jed, "Lilac Wine" doesn't have the same urgency as "Sinnerman". But there's a brooding intensity that's shared by both tracks, at least to my ears..."My Sweet Lord" is just far too jaunty...

Not to be totally out of context but I remember in that Lives of John Lennon book there was a story of Lennon going to a Nina Simone concert really drunk shouting about how hot she looked until they kicked him out.

let me just say that that was totally not nina simone but Ann Peebles and now I feel like an idiot

"....Color of my True Love's Hair"

Nina Simone is gorgeous.

:-D

um.

let's see.

if you like piano epics:

Jason Anderson - The Wreath (esp. "My Balancing Act" and "The Library" and "You Fall")
Eluvium
Chris Garneau "Not Nice"
Carissa's Wierd (esp. "Lazy Eyelids")
STEVE REICH - ELECTRIC COUNTERPOINT, FOR 18 MUSICIANS, CLAPPING MUSIC................

Reich has the spirit of Nina Simone, plus academia. so there!

I was thinking for some reason.. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds "Tender Prey"

daria-g, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:15 (seventeen years ago) link

Does anyone else feel like "Sinnerman" is the original house tune? I sometimes expect the "Power! Power Lord!" call-and-response section to break into "I gotta have House...Music" and then "Rock your body! Move your body!"

"Get By" obv.

I love her almost big band sound

filthy dylan, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 07:08 (sixteen years ago) link

i think of "sinnerman," "tweeter" and "see-line woman" as essentially rhythm tracks. that's what's distinctive about them. i mean, they have good melodies and hooks, but the rhythm is what sets them apart to me. i wish nina had done more of that particular thing. maybe she did and i just haven't heard it.

"...almost big band sound."

Like "My Baby Just Cares for Me" and "Sugar in My Bowl". Or is that last one more torch-y? Don't care. Both are awesome.

"Love Me Or Leave Me" is great.

I just can't think of how Sinnerman goes at the moment but my fave Nina track is from her less favoured later work - cover of Randy Newman's Baltimore.
If there's any The Wire fans on here, it would make a superb soundtrack to that

Apologies if this has been mentioned, but Timbaland liberally samples/manipulates "Sinnerman" on the opening cut of his solo album from last year. It's interesting, at the very least.

six years pass...

Is the piano arrangement in double time while she sings in single time, or is piano in single time and the vocals in half time?
