C/D: King's X

A vastly under-appreciated band who lost the way for a while but whose early discs (and I mean the first 4-5 albums, maybe more) were wonderful slabs of Beatles harmonies with hard rock riffs that shit all over sonically-similar Smithereens who seemed to get better ink - in fact, aside from an early Spin article when they opened for Robert Plant and support from the metal press, I don't know if the band ever received much critical love. But man, those shows in the early '80 I saw them still stick in my mind as some of the best concerts I have ever seen.

Early '90s***

I saw them open for Dio a couple years ago, and they were pretty boring. Of course, almost any band would be sandwiched between Hammerfall and Dio. Still, I agree -- those first records were phenomenal. Gretchen goes to Nebraska, bizarre liner notes aside, has some brilliant tunes. Total classic.

Ty Tabor was a tuneful, melodic player with great tone, but I couldn't get past the singer's theatrics.

first two records are pretty great. "over my head" should have been a hit. after that they lost me.

Okay, now I've seen everything. According to this, Pinnick is going to be appearing in...the sequel to Manos: The Hands of Fate.

How is it I'd not ever heard of this Tres Mtns project before just now (they're performing on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon)? It's Doug Pinnick and Mike and Jeff from Pearl Jam.

Not spectacular or anything now, but 20 year-old me would've been freaking out.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 25 March 2011 05:34 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh, I guess it's just Tres Mts.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 25 March 2011 05:35 (thirteen years ago) link

I started a thread about them - a new one because I wasn't sure what thread I should put it in.

I also didn't remember starting *this* thread nearly 4 years ago...

I guess Mike's not an official member then, but he was handling the bulk of the guitar playing on tv.

soundgarden really owed a lot to this band, I was thinking today, particularly 'summerland' on Gretchen.

I think Cornell has admitted as much, in some format that's apparently google-proof. Or at least Doug SAYS Cornell admitted as much, in some interview somewhere. MY FAVE BAND EVAH, btw. Here's something I wrote for a Christian site about Faith, Hope, Love.

"It's Love" was a really great single.

anyway gretchen goes to nebraska and out of the silent planet are pretty great! (nebraska has a little less dated production)...but yeah i def hear echoes of a lot of 90s-post grunge rock in this band

BraveWords: I remember when I interviewed you a while back, you mentioned that you and Chris Cornell have discussed working on a project together from time to time. Would you still like to work together?

Doug Pinnick: “I’d still love to. I haven’t spoke to Chris in a couple of years. Every now and then, he changes his phone number and doesn’t tell anybody, and give him another year, and he’ll get back to you. So I’ll get a message from him, going, ‘Is this Pinnick?’ I’ll go, ‘Who’s this?’ And he’ll go, ‘Cornell!’ And we’ll start chatting again. You know how those super rock stars are – they have to change their numbers all the time. I don’t have to – I’ve had the same number since 1985!”

BraveWords: I always thought that would be an interesting pairing, because similar to you, Chris Cornell also has a soulful voice – as heard on the Temple of the Dog material.

Doug Pinnick: “Oh yeah – we’re huge fans of each other. We love each other’s voices – we always tell each other that. It would be fun.”

also listened to Gretchen earlier today and was hearing Alice in Chains, esp in the vocal harmonies

Dominique, Thursday, 4 February 2016 20:47 (eight years ago) link

man Doug Pinnick knows more about harmony than all the grunge bands put together

I promise to tell you my story next time I'm in town.

Now back to King's X.

I remember when Faith Hope Love came out I thought they'd finally break out and be the next Rush. Still sad they never got that big.

if there's a Seven Mary Three/Bruce Hornsby crossover story I'm gonna flip

I don't have one. Though there might have been a Seven Mary Three/Travis Morrison encounter or two.
