Retro rock itch

It's kind of like jock itch, in that you can't just scratch it, you've gotta dump some powder in yer shorts to soothe it. For me that powder came in the form of Witchcraft's Firewood. The perfect mix of those memorable, fuzzy Black Sabbath riffs and bulbous, throbbing bass, much better than Sabbath's own Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die, the only two I hadn't heard until recently.

It's been two years, however, and I'm getting itchy again. Wolfmother, The Sword, the new Melvins and High on Fire were okay, but didn't quite do the trick. I'm looking forward to QOTSA's Era Vulgaris but am not fully confident it will be what I need. So, has anyone heard any of the ones below, or have other recommendations?

Colour Haze * Tempel (Elektrohasch GER) 06
The Confession * Requiem (Science) 07
Fair to Midland * Fables From A Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times Is True (Universal) 07
Nebula * Apollo (Liquor and Poker) 06
Rose Hill Drive (Megaforce) 06
Turn Me On Dead Man * Technicolour Mother (Virus) 06
Witch (Tee Pee) 06
Wolf & Cub * Vessels (Dot Dash/4AD) 06

Any others from the StonerRock.com list?

witch is absolutely fantastic. i highly recommend them. if you like what you hear online, you'll likely like the rest of the album as well.

nebula, while excellent live, are, in my opinion only fair to middling on record.

as for other recommendations, try middian's age eternal, which is a new band born from the ashes of yob. both middian and yob are extremely heavy and plodding (in a good way) with searing vocals.

anhell*ca, Friday, 4 May 2007 18:51 (sixteen years ago) link

A song, not an album that should work for you is "Heavy Friends" by Boris. It's on the Heavy Rocks LP which is import-only.

call all destroyer, Friday, 4 May 2007 19:15 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah, that's a good call. you might want to investigate boris in it's entirety, though, since they're pretty great and you might be surprised how much you'll like them. 'pink' is the name of their latest. they also released a split last year with a band called sunn O))), who might be worth investigating as well.

also, matt pike from high on fire's previous band, sleep. 1992's holy mountain is the goto for them, but you should check out dopesmoker, their 63 minute song/album. it is, as you might imagine, a trip.

anhell*ca, Friday, 4 May 2007 19:45 (sixteen years ago) link

I wasn't really impressed with Nebula's previous efforts, but Apollo is pretty great. Witch, on the other hand, are awful. The music isn't terrible, but the vocals kill that thing dead. You might want to check out the Invaders compilation that came out last year on Kemado. Good overview of a lot of that retro indie metal stuff. I didn't like a lot of that, but there might be stuff that appeals to you.

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 4 May 2007 20:10 (sixteen years ago) link

Get the new EARTHLESS album! and the latest AMPLIFIED HEAT album is awesome too.

scott seward, Friday, 4 May 2007 20:13 (sixteen years ago) link

What if one is hungering for Groundhogs atavism rather than Sabbath? Is anyone following up that kinda heavy alienated nightmare blues these days?

Jon Lewis, Friday, 4 May 2007 20:22 (sixteen years ago) link

vocals. the achilles heel of stoner rock.

anhell*ca, Friday, 4 May 2007 20:22 (sixteen years ago) link

I second what Scott said. You may also want to check out the Illuminati, The Hidden Hand, Priestess, Fu Manchu, Sahg, Seemless, and I.

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 4 May 2007 20:27 (sixteen years ago) link

I have all the Boris, Fu Manchu and Sleep, which are good for other types of itchies.

I'll check out the other tips, thanks.

sahg, how could i forget? i love this thread. it's reminding me what i need to go home and listen to tonight.

anhell*ca, Friday, 4 May 2007 20:37 (sixteen years ago) link

As noted, wretched vocals derail most of the so-called retro rockers. Seventies bands never had, or would have put up with, the crappy singers and shouters that are the weapon of choice in hipster metal and stoner rock. Wino's is the one exception, and since he's well into middle age he actually comes up from a scene were being able to sing was important. The first Witchcraft album is also marginally better than the second.

You might consider looking into Cathedral. Lee Dorian has a style that upholds the music.

There are a lot of bands -- made up of the young -- that still do classic rock. You find them on CD Baby, a most unhip -- and therefore a place to my liking, the best of which are frequently discussed on the Rolling Metal thread.

George Brigman's new Rags in Skull record is worth investigation.

One could try the new UFO double CD. First side is a reissue of High Stakes and Dangerous Men, an album unreleased in the US from when the band had journeyman Larry Archer on guitar. It's included with a live CD from the same period which would be -- by definition -- vintage in sound. Has their usual grinders and sludgers, with Phil Mogg, whose always been a good singer. I'd go for it if it's cheap. Used copies will probably be easy to come by.

Gorge, Friday, 4 May 2007 20:37 (sixteen years ago) link

I didn't think the first Witchcraft album sounded very good. Songs seemed weaker too, but I've been meaning to revisit. I don't remember being impressed by Cathedral but will also relisten. I love the live UFO album, so will look for that one, thanks.

Retro rock in general is dime a dozen, to be sure. The hard part is finding something, if not completely awesome, almost great.

Fastnbulbous, Friday, 4 May 2007 21:02 (sixteen years ago) link

Well, it's almost never completely awesome and I say that as a huge fan of Seventies also-ran hard rockers and the style. One develops a taste for various aspects of it. The stubborn resistance to writing fluffy pop even when it would save the career. The unflash presentation. The idea that complete dolts as well as chopsy musicians can turn in records of equal quality.

Cathedral's catalog is pretty expansive. Some of its great, but not all of it. "Hopkins the Witchfinder" as a single, is righteous. The first album which is pure poorly recorded doom has an ambience that's interesting. The Ethereal Mirror, which was done a major label studio budget, is the best CD I have. A recent 2 CD best of certainly has its moments.

Cactus did a reunion record late last year. There's a new double CD retrospective on Black Oak Arkansas in most stores (on Rhino). I'm not a fan of all BOA by any means, but stoner rockers tended to falsely genuflect in the general direction of the idea of Jim Dandy. They mostly never get his execution.

You'd probably like the very old Mahogany Rush records. The first three -- Maxoom, Child of the Novelty and Strange Universe -- come packaged in one budget-priced set. Early Fank Marino & Co. were psychedelic and druggy in a way like no other. By turns -- the music is grandiose, as well as turgid and sludged out, often weird and subliminal hard rock, either draped in fog or looking into the cosmos. Odd band, had some radio play when anyone could still get radio play, were picked up by Leber-Kreps who were the promoters/managers of Aerosmith and Ted Nugent, which got 'em into the arenas. At which point they turned the show into pure Hendrix imitation and white boy blooz extensions, like "I'm a Kingbee" and "Johnny B. Goode." Not really the same as the early records.

Gorge, Friday, 4 May 2007 21:23 (sixteen years ago) link

Earthless should scratch your Groundhogs itch, Jon. There's even a groundhogs cover on their latest CD.

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 4 May 2007 22:07 (sixteen years ago) link

I picked up the Sahg 1, and it is pretty awesome. Not sure why it didn't show up more prominently in reviews, year-end lists.

haha Turn Me On Dead Man = STAY AWAY!!!

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 20:37 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah they're pretty cheesy, but I like a couple of their songs.

Colour Haze * Tempel (Elektrohasch GER) 06 - Nice fuzzy sound, lots and lots of endless, repetitive riffing, need more/better songs, yet it continues to grow on me.
Earthless * Rhythms From a Cosmic Sky (Tee Pee) 07 - Despite the long songs (two over 20 min), the riffs are surprisingly spritely and catchy. No singing until the third, and last, short song, the 4:36 "Cherry Red." Shit-hot musicians, I want more.
The Hidden Hand * The Resurrection of Whiskey Foote (Southern Lord) 07 - Haven't heard it all yet.
Nebula * Apollo (Liquor and Poker) 06 - Long been a solid, dependable but not quite awesome band. Sounds marginally better than recent albums.
Priestess * Hello Master (Ace Fu) 06 - Another young (Canadian) band finding their voice -- rocks hard, production a little too edgy, gave me a headache first listen.
Seemless * What Have We Become (Equal Vision) 06 - Heard the first s/t 04 album, former emo punk/metal, sounds too much like Alice in Chains for my taste, though they sound good.
Turn Me On Dead Man * Technicolour Mother (Virus) 06 - Veer all over the place with faster and slower trippy numbers, not always good.
Wolf & Cub * Vessels (Dot Dash/4AD) 06 - Hand picked by Josh Homme of QOTSA and TV on the Radio as tourmates. Pretty unique psych sound, could see their live show would be great, but album's a little inconsistent.

glad you liked sahg - they made my year end list, but my influence is pretty limited. :)

also, i'm looking forwarding to reading what you think of middian live... i haven't seen them yet (nor did i get a chance to see yob when they were around), and i'm very curious as to whether they translate well to the stage.

fwiw, priestess is one of my favorite bands, and lucky me, just happen to hail from my town. they're excellent live - you should check 'em out when they roll through next time.

Picked up Graveyard at Reckless and I love it. Definite Witchcraft sort of sound with some Monster Magnet vocals. Downloaded others, I like Grand Magus - Monument, great vocalist, but other two get a little more power metal. The Colour Haze is gorgeous, Weedeater, Dozer and YOB are definitely heavier. Blood Ceremony has flute in almost all its songs, but still sounds pretty good, heavier than Jethro Tull; Colour Haze is gorgeous.

It does seem like that's the best Burning Saviours so far. I think I see why Witchcraft gets more attention though. The singer for Dead Man is awfully warbly, takes some getting used to. Also enjoying these:

Nebula - Heavy Psych 09
RPG - Worth The Weight 08

RPG is pretty energetic and raucous, reminding me at some points of Rocket From the Crypt and vocals similar to Hold Steady's. I like this better!

Just got an excellent Swedish retro hard rock album in the mail - Horisont's Två Sidor av Horisonten. If you like Witchcraft, Dead Man and of course November, the first and greatest Swedish hard-blues-psych-rock band, you'll love this. It absolutely could have been recorded in 1972. Side One (tracks 1-5) in English, Side Two (tracks 6-10) in Swedish.

unperson, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 15:32 (fourteen years ago) link

Dead Man's "Euphoria" seconded. Extra points for singing "squeeze my lemon" on a record in 2008.

Elope's "no-name record" is really nice, though quite a bit poppier than the rest of the stuff on this thread. Reminds me of "Parachute" by Pretty Things. In a similar vein, has anyone heard the Pet Genius album? A side project by a guy from Cave In (who I've not really ever heard), it reminds me of Elope but adds more Kyuss-y guitar here and there and traces of White Stripes.

Robert Necrofrost, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 15:36 (fourteen years ago) link

Is it November or Novembre? What are some key albums? There's like a dozen bands called November and I can't find any reference to one as the greatest from Sweden!

november. their "en ny tid ar har" and "2:a" albums are great. better than most of the revival stuff by far.

Hawkwindz Johnson is right. It's November, and they were only active from about '69/70-'72. They put out three studio albums - En Ny Tid Ar Här, 2:a November and 6:e November, all of which are well worth hearing. There was a very posthumous live album (recorded in 1971, released in the early 2000s) also, just called Live.

Aside from The Jesus Lizard, Pfork didn't really have any decent hard rockin' bands. In the past they'd had The Sword, Blue Cheer and Mastodon. I actually regretted not going to see Judas Priest perform British Steel at Charter One last night instead.

:-) Dr. Brown & Dr. Frond wuz both pretty freekin good, IMHO. Seems like there was another Bevis Frond/Woronzow-related band that might fit in this discussion. I think it was Scorched Earth, or maybe the record was titled Scorched Earth. I don't think it was as good as Dr. Brown, but it was mining a similar stream. Speaking of "Dr." bands, Dr. Phibes & the Whatever-the-heck-they-were wasn't bad. It struck me as too slick, and the Hendrix comparisons were unwise at best.

two weeks pass...

For those who like their stoner rockers unhealthily obsessed with Thin Lizzy, this hits the spot:

Gypsyhawk - Patience And Perseverance (Creator-Destructor)
http://soundrevolutionhome.wordpress.com/2010/06/26/gypsyhawk-patience-and-perseverance/
Aquarius:

All right, another "hawk" band. Lately there's been Freedom Hawk, and Doomhawk. Being somewhat "stoner rock", this is one that should also appeal to the same folks who liked Freedom Hawk. And going way back, maybe even Hawkwind. Though the classic '70s rock band that these guys most remind us of is Thin Lizzy. A LOT. They're overtly, utterly under the spell of Thin Lizzy (a band that's more influential now than ever it seems). The melodic but husky vocals are like a gruffer Phil Lynott, the twin guitars twine together harmoniously in classic Lizzy fashion. And heck, in case we didn't get it, they even do a song entitled "For Those Who Love The Lizz" that not only sounds like Lizzy, but has lyrics that cleverly consist of references to that band's songs, like "the hero and the madman", "renegade boys back in town", "that blue orphanage in the shade", etc., as a tribute to their Irish inspiration! Although, overall, Gypsyhawk are more than a tribute, bringing in elements of garage, doom, punk, prog, and good ol' metal along with the specific Lizzy/Lynott influence.

Turns out, Gypsyhawk vocalist/bassist Eric Harris used to be in blackened thrashers Skeletonwitch, another killer band we like quite a bit. What we heard was that he got kicked out of Skeletonwitch, or otherwise quit the band, while they were on tour. This happened in Los Angeles, and instead of catching a Greyhound bus back home to Ohio where Skeletonwitch are from, though, Harris decided to stay in LA and start his own band there! Which, we gotta say, is a pretty darn rock n' roll thing to do. Thus, Gypsyhawk was born. And they're quite a bit different from Skeletonwitch (whose dual guitars dated from a different era) but equally awesome. For those into more melodic stuff, anachronistically proto-metal, especially so. These guys have the riffs, the leads, the melodic hooks, and the heaviness, to be right up there in the "hawk" band pantheon. Rockin' and majestic stuff that should go down well with fans of Lizzy-lovin' bands like Bible Of The Devil, Hot Fog, Falcon, and Valkyrie.

Was anyone in Germany for last month's Up In Smoke festival? Wish I coulda seen that. I'll have to check out Sungrazer and Rotor.

One of the most gorgeous settings for a live musical performance I've ever seen.

Speaking of Colour Haze, I've been digging into a couple older albums that I just found - Co2 (2000) and Ewige Blumenkraft (2001). Just grabbed first album, Chopping Machine (1995), which is much different. I'm excited to learn they have a new album coming out!

Was listed as 2010, haven't seen an updated release date yet.

I wrote about Blood Ceremony on MSN today. They've improved a lot since their debut, which I found boring.

that's not funny. (unperson), Friday, 4 March 2011 18:04 (thirteen years ago) link

Nice! I just bought that last night, I agree.

I found out the Colour Haze album, titled She Said, is delayed until they resolve some technical problems that happened during the recording. Meanwhile, I wrote an overview and made a sampler mix - http://www.fastnbulbous.com/colour-haze.htm

While working on the Colour Haze piece, I also listened to some bands on their Elektrohasch label. Good stuff. I like Sungrazer best, just some good, heavy, fuzz rock. I liked the other My Sleeping Karma album, don't know why I missed the new one. Hypnos 69 are a lot different from the normal stoner roster, with some wild free jazz saxophone stuff. I like it when in the right mood. Rotor is mostly instrumental, solid.

Sungrazer (Elektrohasch)
My Sleeping Karma - Tri (Elektrohasch)
Hypnos 69 - Legacy (Elektrohasch)
Rotor - 4 (Elektrohasch)

I also caught up on these:

Truckfighters - Mania (Fuzzorama) 09
Ancestors - Neptune With Fire (North Atlantic Sound) 08
Truckfighters - Phi (Fuzzorama) 07
Rotor - 3 (Elektrohasch) 07
Hypnos 69 - Eclectic Measure (Elektrohasch) 06
Dozer - Through The Eyes Of Heathens (Small Stone) 05
Truckfighters - Gravity X (MeteorCity) 05
Dozer - Call It Conspiracy (Molten Universe) 03

Nice piece! Really like that Sungrazer record. Two recommendations if you haven't heard them: Sasquatch - Sasquatch II, and Ramon Zarate - Oyster.

Thanks, I've heard of Sasquatch but haven't tracked it down yet. Like my Colour Haze piece, the Primer has a mix -- click on the Graveyard graphic at top.

three months pass...

Upcoming:

Ancestors - Invisible White EP (Tee Pee) Jun 21
Sungrazer - Mirador (Elektrohasch) Jul 8
Cherry Choke – A Night In The Arms Of Venus... (Elektrohasch) Jul 30
Gozu – Vatican Assassin Warlocks (Small Stone) TBA

The Soda Shop site lists Witchcraft as possibly coming out with something this year, but I hadn't heard of any activity from them, with Pelander supposedly working on a solo full length.

Truckfighters 'Fuzzomentary' that they're trying to get fans to finance the DVD release. Gonna see them on July 20, Gozu & Freedom Hawk Oct 1 in Chicago.

three weeks pass...

Sungrazer's Mirador is out today. It's like wrastlin' with Sweetums the 500 lb muppet -- spine-tingling soft fuzziness can turn to spine-crushing heaviness at any moment.

That teaser makes me want it. Really enjoyed the debut.

These are all retro rock. Mostly because that's what I learned.

one month passes...

Man, they make it hard to buy this stuff. Over a month later, and AllThatIsHeavy still isn't stocking the Sungrazer album. Also on Elektrohasch, Cherry Choke – A Night In The Arms Of Venus came out Jul 30. Who knows when I'll get to hear it. Every label should give an option to buy FLAC and such direct.

Freedom Hawk - Holding On (Small Stone) Aug 16
Colour Haze - She Said (Elektrohasch) Sep 9
Gordon Fights (Transubstans) Sep 24
Rwake - Rest (Relapse) Sep 27

Yep, the new Colour Haze is finally coming out! I'm tempted to pre-order it here - http://www.recordheaven.net/index.cfm?x=browseArtist&ID=3965&iID=125526#cgi.SCRIPT_NAME#

For all I know, ATIS won't stock it 'til November.
