apparently chromeo & darryl hall are gonna play together at bonnaroo
i saw this, it was a good time. was much more the darryl hall show than a chromeo show, but they were fun. i went to that instead of DARK FLAMING LIPS OF THE MOON, i think it was a much better choice.

needy girl & fancy footwork are 10/10 imo... could give or take pretty much everything else

no no no the 2nd album has a bunch of jams ... 'bonafied lovin' 'tenderoni' 'call me up' '100%' ... it was like they stopped seeing 80s as a random throw-against-the-wall pastiche & kinda realized that hey this stuff was already funny ... it seems like they really care abt the music on the 2nd record & it wasnt just one big remember-the-80s joke

100% is super ill
― max, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 04:22 (thirteen years ago) link
There are a ton of solid songs on Fancy Footwork--basically the entire thing is mixtape/party worthy. Even Momma's Boy turns into something of a jam. I would be surprised if the new record is even close to as good as FF but it doesn't need to be.
― skip, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 04:26 (thirteen years ago) link
oh yeah, "bonafied lovin" is actually really good

I gave it another shot but I have to say "Bona fide Lovin" goes down easy enough but is kind of poo.

the eli escobar remix of bonafied lovin is much better than the og, but i could never find a decent download and it only ever seemed to come out on fabriclive38

That second album is growing on me, good r & b and seventies sounds in it...it's just a tad lightweight..maybe I should take a vacation until Business Casual comes out.

better than 1
― blap...tremendo (deej), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 23:10 (thirteen years ago) link
'lightweight' is p much the problem w/ most of the 1st one ... its like they have these vague ideas of what '80s R&B' is like & occasionally a good idea (like the melody for the hook of 'your so gangsta') that they meld w/ these cliches in order to paper over a lack of well anything else ... anyway ive made my pt i think
― blap...tremendo (deej), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 23:12 (thirteen years ago) link
love the actual verses in You're So Gangsta, should have kept 'em on the album

they were super fun when i saw them on fancy footwork tour - 21+ crowd. Birdman was there and the evening all around was super sexy
― run (The Reverend), Thursday, 29 July 2010 06:43 (thirteen years ago) link
ok, maybe birdman wasn't there
I liked 'em on Fancy Footwork tour too, three out of the four times I saw 'em. Birdman wasn't there either.

(Fourth time was a festival mainstage in the afternoon, just way too big for 'em. Watched six minutes and went to see lol Wale instead.)
but it was all around super sexy tho, right?

"Don't Turn the Lights On"....is that a Can reference? Always suspected them of making subtle references to others' work. In any case, new album is due soon, no??

Them playing with John Oates as mentioned upthread is kind of awesome. fun, nerdy production talk here at and then at 3:50 they start jammin on No Can Do (can't go for that)

more synth and funk record talk here. These bros are just likable, I like when they speak French to each other.

i thought i would be over them by now but this made me lol
"We’re not openly talking about any of these subjects in our music. Rather than talk about them explicitly we prefer to offer hints for people to make their own minds. When we named the album White Women we thought we’d provoke debates on issues of sex, race and gender. We’re in the midst of a conservative moment in America. The backlash to “Blurred Lines” was so puritanical. White Women is the title of Helmut Newton’s first book.
The other thing that’s super important to us is the question of race. Pat and I are very ambiguous: he’s a Christian Lebanese and I’m an Arab Jew. These things are confusing to most people in America. If people are going to listen to our music, why not make them think too? We made an album that’s racially blurred, an homage to black music titled White Women. You can appreciate it first degree or you can see an intellectual discourse on the war of sexes and race. In that way, it’s neither traditional funk nor traditional electronic music."
their fallon perfomance with death from above is pretty slick.

this thing is like legit 80% great.
the back half of Somethingood! the teen pop opener. Tory Y Moi is probably someone i am supposed to hate but that song is so good. that hook and the solange hook are pure maple syrup. lots of hooks really. Ezras intld i was ready to HATE but its actually incredible. the sax on Fall Back 2u.

I've heard half of this - I like the opener a lot; some of the lyrics are a little clunky.
The lede in your pitchfork review was a little bit weird though j0rd - is it really a thing now that all decent albums must have significant written and oral retrospectives on their tenth birthday before officially joining the canon?

sadly yes?

i admit that it was a bit awkward though. i felt like it was the easiest route to get to my thesis, which is that this album in particular feels like something that really benefits from not being weighed down by expectations and the way people discuss music online writ large (a contrasting album would be like... the EMA record or something)
― le goon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 16 May 2014 02:24 (ten years ago) link
This is a lot better than it needed to be! Little things like the outro on "Play The Fool" & the bridge on "Sexy Socialite" are gorgeous.
(& since nobody's posted it to the thread & the existence thereof cheers me up, here's "Fancy Footwork" getting used in Step Up 3D:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9nkv4z6-aE)

Oliver co-production is the secret weapon here. Likewise for that new Camron/A-Trak joint. Watch out for those guys. Big pop things in their future I think.
