So glad I decided to check out Diamond Mine. One of the prettiest records I think I've ever heard. I've never been to Fife, but at risk of sounding trite, listening to this makes me feel as though I grew up there. It actually makes me feel rather homesick. Is that possible?

Following the Mercury nomination for their first collaborative album Diamond Mine, King Creosote & Jon Hopkins can now reveal details of their next EP, Honest Words. Featuring a reworking of album track 'Bats In The Attic' as well as two brand new songs, the EP will be available on 19th September on 12” vinyl (DS048T) and via digital download (DS048D).
Lyrically, there's more soul-searching than Fife folklore on the EP follow up to Diamond Mine - the teasing out of the truth in an obfuscating lyric, or contemplating the truth as laid bare by feline nature and star fields. The music underneath follows these thoughts into more expansive, crystalline realms, far away from the harbours and tea-rooms where they began.

Tracklisting is as follows:

Don't forget to catch King Creosote and Jon Hopkins live, their recent sold out show at The Union Chapel ‘sounded ancient and modern, complex yet blissfully sparse, and very, very beautiful’ (5* review from the Evening Standard).

I saw them in February and they were excellent. Just the two of them, no backing band or anything. Played the whole album all the way through, no interruptions except for polite applause between tracks. Really beautiful. They then played some of KC's back catalogue, a couple of covers (Nothing Compares To You & The Only Living Boy In New York), and JH played Small Memory from his last album on the piano. Funny moment in the second half when JH told KC that his guitar wasn't in tune, which led to KC playing chords and notes, and JH replying on his piano to demonstrate his perfect pitch. Great night, really enjoyed it.

Just noticed there is a Creosote album from this year on his website.
― djh, Wednesday, 23 September 2015 17:52 (eight years ago) link
I'm sure I mentioned it a million times already but every time I see Hopkins' name next to Creosote I cringe. He should be a footnote like the session musician or the producer that he is.
I'm not near my mp3 library but it's surprising how much of the Creosote/Hopkins stuff was solo tracks King Creosote had been fiddling around with for years. When I get home I might count all the tracks that had already been previously released.
The Creoste/Hopkins material seems like a footnote next to stronger releases that came afterwards like 'That Might Well Be It, Darling' and 'Sure & Steadfast'.
One of Creosote's latest releases, 'Smavulgar', has some of the Diamond Mine vibe in that it opted for slower atmospheric songs. However those atmospheres are (mostly) not as sleepy.
....
That being unnecessarily said here's some mp3's:A better version of Bubble with Amy MacDougall, link, and if you search that blog there are at least a couple full concerts of Creosote + Hopkins that you can download.
― The Once-ler, Wednesday, 23 September 2015 18:09 (eight years ago) link
Just ordered "Smavulgar".
I did once try and compile an alternate version of "Diamond Mine" using original versions, Once-ler, but think I only ever got to three or so tracks (eg. The Cold Seeds "Bubble") from what I owned (I think they were all existing tracks). As much as I love tracks on "S&S" and "That Might Well Be It", I love the coherence of "Diamond Mine". Creosote is, undeniably, a patchy bugger.
Session musicians/producers are important. Whoever is in a room changes what is recorded. If the tracks on "Diamond Mine" had been recorded by Creosote alone or Steve Albini or my gran, the results would be different - the version with Hopkins works for me.
― djh, Wednesday, 23 September 2015 21:41 (eight years ago) link
What do you think of Smavulgar? It grows on you
― The Once-ler, Sunday, 11 October 2015 20:06 (eight years ago) link
I like it a lot. Context: "Diamond Mine" is my ideal Creosote alongside "Patchy Bugger" (see above). "Smavulgar" works as a consistent album whereas "That Might Well Be It" and "Sure & Steadfast" seemed more inconsistent but with tracks on each that I love. He doesn't paint a very nice picture of himself, does he?
