Ricky Martin?

Probably. Is La India playing Celia Cruz during the big Fania All Stars show?

I see from the IMDB cast list that Furio from The Sopranos will be playing Jerry Masucci.

j lo basically shoves everyone else off the screen. it's more about her girlfriend character than anyone else.

And of course, in real life, I don't even know anything about Hector Lavoe's girlfriend. It seems like misplace emphasis, if what you say is true. (I haven't seen it.) Why are messages being hidden when there are only seven of them? Weird.

in real life, I don't even know anything about Hector Lavoe's girlfriend. She is mentioned once here http://www.salsacentro.com/hectorlavoe.htm

"Come on, Marc, let's make a movie about Hector Lavoe. It'll be a hoot!"

The movie sounds pretty lame from what I'm reading in a salsa discussion group.

sad, i'd like to see a good hector lavoe movie. hey r.s., are there some good movies/documentaries of that era?

Descarga is giving the soundtrack a pretty good review. I think Yomo Toro is on it, even if he is not portrayed in it.

Descarga gives everything a pretty good review (although I have to admit this one sounds a little more convincing than usual, but maybe they just worked on it more).

Incidentally, this was the original official thread for El Cantante, although I like your thread title better:
Marc Anthony & J. Lo to star in film about Hector Lavoe

"Coming soon!"
Thanks. I don't know why I didn't just revive your thread. Anyway, here's a short thread on another board about Yomo Toro's instrument the cuatro

Now I hear people saying the movie is good, but it concentrates too much on his substance abuse.

This is all pretty much inevitable. Apparently La India has gone off about El Cantante as well (although her salsa bona fides aren't exactly universally recognized).
I think the concern about showing Latinos as drug addicts is a bit mis-placed. Most people are not going to say, "Another Latino drug addict," they're going to say, "Another musician drug addict."

Well, I went out and bought the CD (along with Sonora Ponceña's Explorando, as recommended in the other salsa thread). Will listen to it as soon as I get tired of the Miles Davis On The Corner Sessions box. So, um, look for my comments sometime in 2027.
