some of my favorite stuff of the past few years is from FXHE.

elan, Thursday, 27 September 2007 23:18 (sixteen years ago) link

like what?

I love the Day/Night record (that's the one with the Supremes sample, right?), but have yet to find any others that have truly grabbed me ... mostly because Omar's stuff is so hard to find in shops (probably should order direct, I suppose).

Romeo Jones, Friday, 28 September 2007 03:04 (sixteen years ago) link

That is the best thing he has done. I don't think it is possible to make a more stripped down lo-fi house record.

Check here:

http://infinitestatemachine.com/2007/08/06/a-conversation-with-omar-s/

I can't say enough good things about pipecock's blog.

I don't blame rarity on yr inability to find other good material. Everything is available as an mp3 sample on his site:

Dude got struck by lightning once and he hasn't come with anything as strong since.

elan, Friday, 28 September 2007 15:21 (sixteen years ago) link

I've been meaning to start this thread for months. Now that it's here, I don't have much of a chance to contribute. Check for sounds clips of OASIS Seventeen, Nineteen, and Twenty-Two. Great stuff. Also his newest one with Theo "Grand Son of Detroit Techno" is as strong as anything else he'd released. I love "Day" as much as anyone but he's hardly a lightning strike once producer. Pipecock needs to get on here and spread the gospel.

matt2, Friday, 28 September 2007 16:12 (sixteen years ago) link

Also the T.O.M. Project release on Sound Signature with Theo P and Malik Pittman is mindblowing.

matt2, Friday, 28 September 2007 16:14 (sixteen years ago) link

I would rather listen to Rick Wade.

Display Name, Friday, 28 September 2007 19:23 (sixteen years ago) link

haha, here i am to "spread the gospel" ;)

hey, i love rick wade as much as the next man (in fact, i have all his house records except the first Harmonie Park which is near the top of my wants list) but his stuff is certainly more samey than omar-s'. and really, i at least like everything omar-s has done, and i love a large portion of it. but this isnt a competition, both of those guys make excellent music.

here's my favorites from omar-s:

1. "Just Ask the Lonely" - what a fucking track. when i first got it on CD (it was out on CD for like a year before it was on wax) my friend jwan and i played that shit like 10 times straight. amazing.

2. "The Maker" - another one of those super sublime soulful electronic joints. pure beauty.

3. "In Side My Head" - super nasty funky shit, somewhere between techno house and electro and dragged through some dirt.

4. "Set It Out" - excellent use of an old electro vocal, he turns it into a beautiful deep jam.

5. "Churchill" - minimal nasty jacking joint, good for layering with disco records.

on the real though, so much of his shit is good. for as cheap as you can get everything straight from him, i reccomend just buying a bunch and mixing them up. the hiphop EP is really nice, too, very underrated.

pipecock, Friday, 28 September 2007 20:23 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah, that track "shine on me" from side-trakx is like heaven to me

elan, Friday, 28 September 2007 21:21 (sixteen years ago) link

i especially like "give it to me". it sounds disco with the guitar sample, and the bassline (which turns to acid near the end) is funky like peacocks. the vocal loop says "give it to me" every other measure for the first half, and then he lets the other measure drop, "let me have it". near the end he cuts off "give it to me". the structure is very simple and beautiful. so is the music.

give it to me
let me have it
give it to me
let me have it
give it to me
let me have it

elan, Friday, 28 September 2007 21:28 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah ive killed dancefloors with "give it to me" many a time. probably the first omar-s that really killed it like that, for me at least. i might take that one out with me tonight in fact!

pipecock, Friday, 28 September 2007 21:35 (sixteen years ago) link

i've been meaning to check out 006. i'm always looking for minimal sounds that go with disco, so thanks.

elan, Friday, 28 September 2007 21:36 (sixteen years ago) link

all right. I might have to order up some omar then (or at least give it another listen). thanks for the reccomends.

Display Name, Sunday, 30 September 2007 09:47 (sixteen years ago) link

one of the things i like about 'the maker' is that bit near the end where he brings the keyboard melody that is nearly identical to the melody from chez damier's 'i never knew love'.

i love that melody so much, but i just can't get with chez's lyrics. "i never knew love / but i think i love you." really? who has never been in love with somebody? it's like he cut off his head to convince this girl (or guy? i don't know) that he loves her. it's so beyond belief but maybe it could work in the right moment with the right person.

so omar took the melody (same synth, too) and put it in a song with better lyrics and the same loving feeling.

i guess that all depends on your definition of trance. is it a record that could be considered trance inducing? sure. is it anything resembling the genre called "trance"? only if youre so drunk you can't think.

i did a guest mix for the TAPE blog that should be dropping tomorrow or the next day that features this new track as well as a bunch of other detroit house shit, ill post a link when its up.

indeed he did get some equipment from him, but i would DEFINITELY bet against it being derrick may. i've heard rumours that Transmat talked to him at one point about signing some tracks.....

pipecock, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 01:54 (sixteen years ago) link

oasis doesn't really sound like derrick may anyways. but we can dream. they both seem like very, shall we say, strong minded individuals.

elan, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 01:57 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm sure it's not him, but as for OASIS not sounding like D. May, I have to say that tracks like OASIS Seventeen, Nineteen, and Twenty-Two (yes these are the same three that I mentioned above, but they really are standouts to me) are definitely what I could imagine D. May sounding like these days.

i actually dont disagree with that. its tough to be sure, but that shit does have some of the hallmarks of great D.May productions.

let's talk about how much omar-s rules

i saw him DJ over the summer and the first thing he did when he got in the DJ "booth" (really just a big table between the speaker stacks with the DJ gear on it) was to kill all the lights in the house. then he took down the purple spotlight that was pointing at the DJ booth. he actually grabbed the spotlight and pulled it down. then he stuck it on the floor under the table with the light facing the dancers feet. and then he started his set.

and he played this, too!

I'm not in the scene to hear stories but his interviews always seemed to have an aggressive tone. Some of the samples he's used I found very off to the point I can't listen to his work. I like productions in that style but there are people doing better work. Sad to see DJs and producers taking pity on him and sending him support.
