Well, that's got everyone thinking!

Mark G, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 16:11 (seventeen years ago) link

i don't mind most of the "bad" ones since they tend to be short and break up the mood of the album a bit, but "How Fucking Romantic" has always annoyed me

ciderpress, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 16:14 (seventeen years ago) link

I Shatter

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 16:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Experimental Music Love is lame, Punk Rock love is shit and lame and a failure. How Fucking Romantic might be shitter than both of those though.

ledge, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 16:29 (seventeen years ago) link

"Underwear." The Experimental Music/World/Punk love songs at least fit the theme. "Underwear" is just cringe-inducing.

My wife would pick "The Way You Say Goodnight" for its use and pronunciation of the word "extraaaavaganza."

mike a, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 16:35 (seventeen years ago) link

i shatter is gr8! experimental music love is such a throw away. punk rock love is hard to like. Wi' Nae Wee Bairn gets on my goat though. so that

Alan, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 16:36 (seventeen years ago) link

"I Shatter" is amazing seconded

President Evil, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 16:40 (seventeen years ago) link

I Shatter is the bee's knees.

I can't pick an inoffensive throwaway thing like Punk Love, not when there are fucking annoying things like Roses and Love Is Like Jazz, which get Disc 2 off to such a bad start.

Wotsit's delivery on Sweet-Lovin' Man does my head in too. Don't understand why some people like it.

Roses or Sweet Lovin' Man, I think.

Alba, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 17:55 (seventeen years ago) link

I find How Fucking Romantic pretty much unlistenable.

caek, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 18:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Punk love is great. I skip right to it all the time. ILM consensus confounds me sometimes. Although yeah How Fucking Romantic is terrible.

filthy dylan, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 19:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Whoever said upthread that "Experimental Music Love" sounds lame, I agree with them.

"I Shatter" and even "Wi' Nae Wee Bairn" (if that's how it's titled) I like alright.:)

t**t, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 19:16 (seventeen years ago) link

"Underwear" is fab, and how ppl look in their undies -- no, not thematically related at ALL

"Experimental Music Love" is jokey filler

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 19:24 (seventeen years ago) link

love is like jazz is pretty bad

but I voted for i shatter since I can physically not listen to it with my headphones...

geekears, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 19:32 (seventeen years ago) link

'Roses' and 'I shatter' are great!

everyone else otm about little entr'actes not being that annoying.

'how fucking romantic' is indeed awful. i'm also have special dislike for 'washington d.c.'

looking at the titles of disc 3 right now, i'm can't really remember how most of them go. weird.

poortheatre, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 19:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Experimental Music Love sets up Meaningless perfectly.

Alba, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 19:49 (seventeen years ago) link

"love is like jazz"

impudent harlot, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 21:04 (seventeen years ago) link

i don't mind "experimental music love" all that much but "punk love" is pretty awful, yeah

impudent harlot, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 21:05 (seventeen years ago) link

Bitches, I will throw down with anybody who says that I Shatter is good.

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 21:39 (seventeen years ago) link

C'mon, it's like the Velvet Underground and stuff.

Alba, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 21:46 (seventeen years ago) link

The problem with I Shatter is it's too white, it doesn't swing. Somebody should write an article about that.

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 22:00 (seventeen years ago) link

I went with "Roses" here, just plain dull.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 16 October 2007 22:53 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm assuming that the votes will be limited to about 5-8 songs hers.

Mark G, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 08:31 (seventeen years ago) link

here. not hers.

Mark G, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 08:31 (seventeen years ago) link

love is like jazz

I don't mind "Punk Love", it's short and funny.

abanana, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:48 (seventeen years ago) link

Definitely "Love is Like Jazz." At least the punk one is short. Same with "Roses." Hating "Experimental Music Love" is akin to hating the Sgt. Pepper outgroove - where will it get you? I suppose people think it's cheating because it's not really a song (more like an interlude or an intro to "Meaningless" as suggested above) and thus shouldn't count as one of the 69. But christ - YOU write 69 songs and see if you don't fall back on an interlude.

Faulting "Underwear" for failing to fit the concept is to not have listened to the song at all. How exactly DOESN'T it fit the concept? I'm no fan of "I Shatter." But faulting it for being too white and non-swinging is to fault the entire project. What song ISN'T too white and/or non-swinging? ("Too" should be in quotes, I suppose.)

And I suspect the rather baffling hatred for "How Fucking Romantic" has to do with how it puts the queerness of the voice(s) right in your face (or ears).

No, y'all, it's "Love is Like Jazz." It should've lasted as long as the punk and experimental tracks but instead is just shy of three dreary minutes. Also, love ISN'T like jazz. They don't call jazz folk douchebags for nothing.

Kevin John Bozelka, Friday, 19 October 2007 14:45 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, don't get the "How Fucking Romantic" hate. It's like a brief, aggro Pet Shop Boys number: Neil Tennant, totally hammered.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 19 October 2007 15:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Saturday, 20 October 2007 23:01 (seventeen years ago) link

This one took time to figure out because this record's pretty near unassailable in my book, and everything suggested so far suits me fine, but "I'm Sorry I Love You" has never done much for me, it just kind of sits there.

dad a, Sunday, 21 October 2007 06:54 (seventeen years ago) link

experimental is the only one i *always* skip. i don't mind punk rock love, even if there's nothing remotely punk rock about it. HFR is shit but it's not the worst.

electricsound, Sunday, 21 October 2007 07:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Sunday, 21 October 2007 23:01 (seventeen years ago) link

righto.

Mark G, Monday, 22 October 2007 08:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Who voted Washington DC? You'd have to hate the whole album to hate on that song, surely?

The Wayward Johnny B, Monday, 22 October 2007 09:18 (seventeen years ago) link

Well, it's one of my bottom five to be honest.

Mark G, Monday, 22 October 2007 09:30 (seventeen years ago) link

i love about half those voted for. hurrah. busby berkely dreams?!? bunny rabbits?!?!?!!!!!eleven

Alan, Monday, 22 October 2007 09:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Also, I'm Sorry I Love You is pretty difficult to hate.

caek, Monday, 22 October 2007 12:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Great link Alan! I need some new songs to strum along badly to and piss my flatmates off.

ledge, Monday, 22 October 2007 13:00 (seventeen years ago) link

There are some crazy votes there. Also "I Shatter" is clearly fantastic (although it was one of several songs here that I thought were merely good before seeing them played live, and then thought were great - they could definitely have recorded it way better).

toby, Monday, 22 October 2007 14:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, at least six of the songs that received votes are pretty damn great!
