I loved "One Week" and hated "Semi-Charmed Life" at the time, but my stance has reversed completely since.

Those little red panties they pass the test, slide them up the belly face down on the matress, one.

I got some crits mad when I compared Semi-Charmed Life to Ghostface.

eccentric sex lyrics? check. drug refs? check. piercing high notes? check.

that post-nirvana pre-Woodstock III era was sooooooo good for rock radio.

but then i was in high school so i'm biased.

This isn't a poll? "Semi-Charmed Life."

jaymc, Monday, 5 November 2007 21:09 (sixteen years ago) link

TS threads have retro cool now, I can dig it.

da croupier, Monday, 5 November 2007 21:11 (sixteen years ago) link

Question is: which one is stuck in your head five minutes after reading this thread?

Eazy, Monday, 5 November 2007 21:16 (sixteen years ago) link

I used to hate both, then I came around on "Semi-Charmed Life" and realized I always kind of liked it and was just embarrassed about that, and now I'll totally go to the mat for it. Great pop song. With "One Week," I still don't want to ever admit there's anything good about it.

jaymc, Monday, 5 November 2007 21:23 (sixteen years ago) link

"Semi-Charmed Life" is brilliance. "One Week" is bullshit (although catchy).

billstevejim, Monday, 5 November 2007 21:24 (sixteen years ago) link

(I'm guessing this has a lot to do with the fact that, despite the fact that "One Week" makes Barenaked Ladies effectively a one-hit wonder in the U.S., I've known lots of people who are big dork-rock BNL fans -- I went to college in Michigan in the late '90s -- and so whatever novelty value their hit has is tarnished by association.)

SCL is bad, but BNL are unlistenable

In some weird way I loved the Third Eye Blind album for one week or so and thought they were, like, the next big thing.

Obviously, I was very, very, very wrong, but "Semi Charmed Life" is still kind of catchy in some kind of way.

Awesome.

Semi-Charmed Life - it sounded like the greatest song ever that one (and only) night I did shrooms.

I told a girl that my pick was "Semi-Charmed Life" because it was more emotionally resonant, but she just laughed at me.

Semi-Charmed Life is great.

SCL is a killer song but Stephan Jenkins is a first-class asshole.

"One Week" is a gutbomb novelty song on par with "We Didn't Start The Fire." Except that I think Billy Joel was serious about his hit.

Semi-charmed Life is great. One Week? Not so much.

SCL makes better karaoke.

"One Week" reminds me of good-hearted friends who watched X-Files in the mid-1990s and generally had their morals and politics in the right place, whatever hipness or quality-of-taste they sometimes lacked.

"Semi-Charmed Life" reminds me of a four-week summer job I had as a teacher/R.A. for some wealthy high-school kids from the NJ/NY/Philly area. Some of them were talented and some were nice kids, but "Semi-Charmed Life" doesn't remind me of their charms or strengths, just their fashion/conformity-to-whatever's-a-hit-song side.

Eazy, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 03:20 (sixteen years ago) link

While quite far from excellent, "Semi-Chamed Life" never made me want to destroy Canada in the way that "One Week" still does.

Odd that you mention that, because one of the things it reminds me of is getting an e-mail from a friend of mine who was in his freshman year of college at the time and was feeling depressed and was complaining about how all anyone at his school cared about was (slightly paraphrased) "Friends and Third Eye Blind and hamburgers and fuck."

They had other sides?

Prefer "Jumper" and "How's It Gonna Be," but I've come around to "Semi-Charmed Life." I gave Stephen Jenkins a pity fuck after Jim Dero came after him.

SCL is kinda the jam. i think that dood from 3rd eye blind would have made a good punk singer, that album of theirs was actually not bad for late 90s commercial alt-rock.

BNL made me wanna puke. canadian rock music is almost as bad as canadian television.

pipecock, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 17:37 (sixteen years ago) link

This question is more or less a joke to me, Semi-Charmed life was a glorious work of it's time, the sincerity of the vocal delivery, the infectious melody. All right, it actually was really quite bad. One week on the other hand was an amalgamation of everything bad that could have been conceived up until its creation, and the fact it was played so often (especially here in Canada due to Cancon and etc.) made it that much worse.
