I predict Agharta in a walk

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 14 December 2007 00:17 (sixteen years ago) link

or maybe Dark Magus

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 14 December 2007 00:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Nah Agharta by a good distance.

Alex in SF, Friday, 14 December 2007 00:18 (sixteen years ago) link

You just never know with ILM.

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 14 December 2007 00:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Agharta is my first impulse, but Plugged Nickel is a lot of hot shit.

Oilyrags, Friday, 14 December 2007 01:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Plugged Nickel will be up there. live stuff on Live Evil is pretty untouchable (tho for sheer amount of great playing, I guess cellar door should be my pick). also really great iare the Fillmore East, March 1970 discs. I really like dark magus/agharta/pangea, but I listen to those a bit differently, less about the individual playing, more about massive amounts of sound (esp bass).

Dominique, Friday, 14 December 2007 01:46 (sixteen years ago) link

God now I want to listen to Agharta, it's been awhile. That disc rocks about as hard as anything ever.

Clay, Friday, 14 December 2007 01:48 (sixteen years ago) link

Dark Magus without even blinking. It's long been my favorite ever Miles. But there are a slew of terrific live bootlegs from this period that definitely deserve a shot - Another Unity, Another Bitches Brew, etc.

Kevin John Bozelka, Friday, 14 December 2007 01:57 (sixteen years ago) link

I want to say Plugged Nickel or Agharta.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 14 December 2007 02:08 (sixteen years ago) link

Wait, isn't the live stuff on Live Evil all from Cellar Door or am I confused?

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 14 December 2007 02:13 (sixteen years ago) link

I need to get that Plugged Nickel stuff, and maybe some of the bootlegs too. Doubt that will be around on any p2ps though will it?

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 14 December 2007 02:45 (sixteen years ago) link

If more people heard the Complete Montreux box, more people would vote for it. Those mid-'80s bands smoked live.

unperson, Friday, 14 December 2007 03:19 (sixteen years ago) link

The Complete Miles Davis at Montreux is the one I had the most fun with. It was a real shock. Not only was it fantastically goodthere was a lot of it and this was meant to be when Miles's talent had faded.

I voted Cellar Door. Not sure why.

The worst would be a bootleg I have with him and Prince.

Popture, Friday, 14 December 2007 03:55 (sixteen years ago) link

For me it's a toss-up between Four + More, Pangaea, and Live Around the World. I think I'm going to go for the latter because it's gonna get snubbed anyway.

Jordan, Friday, 14 December 2007 04:47 (sixteen years ago) link

Jordan, Friday, 14 December 2007 04:47 (sixteen years ago) link

I voted Pangea b/c I know it best.

Mark Rich@rdson, Friday, 14 December 2007 05:11 (sixteen years ago) link

Agharta but it would be hard to argue with a bunch of these. Especially, Live in Europe, Plugged Nickel, Cellar Door (why would anyone vote for Live Evil in this poll?) and Dark Magus. And I almost voted for In Concert just because it's so underrated.

The guy who just votes in polls, Friday, 14 December 2007 15:14 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm leaning towards Pangea at the moment.

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 14 December 2007 17:20 (sixteen years ago) link

Could have been The Complete Concert (Four and More and My Funny Valentine) from 1964 (best "My Funny Valentine" EVER). Could have been the Japanese concerts in 1975 or Dark Magus. Or even the awesome Live at the Fillmore East, March 7, 1970: It's About That Time that the Bitches Brew band did.

But I picked In Concert: Live at Philharmonic Hall to make sure it gets a little love. No other record could have been called Live and On the Corner...

Naive Teen Idol, Friday, 14 December 2007 18:33 (sixteen years ago) link

Yay.

The guy who just votes in polls, Friday, 14 December 2007 18:39 (sixteen years ago) link

i voted for My Funny Valentine -- Naive Teen Idol is correct, the title track is off the charts. Especially like it when someone in the audience screams in rapture -- which must've been weird for a jazz concert in 1964, but I feel what that dude was feeling, for sure.

tylerw, Friday, 14 December 2007 18:46 (sixteen years ago) link

That's an absolutely amazing concert. But even in the complete version I'm a little annoyed they separated the ballads from the uptempo numbers.

The guy who just votes in polls, Friday, 14 December 2007 19:09 (sixteen years ago) link

On the Seven Steps box they place all the tracks in the order they were recorded on the night, including the spoken introductions to both sets.

unperson, Friday, 14 December 2007 19:15 (sixteen years ago) link

Really? I didn't know that. Thanks. (Loved your Miles book, by the way.)

The guy who just votes in polls, Friday, 14 December 2007 19:20 (sixteen years ago) link

I kind of like it because then I can easily skip the ballads. :>

Jordan, Friday, 14 December 2007 19:34 (sixteen years ago) link

I think so. No?

The guy who just votes in polls, Friday, 14 December 2007 19:34 (sixteen years ago) link

i can't keep up with nu-nu-nu-nu-ilx

Jordan, Friday, 14 December 2007 19:36 (sixteen years ago) link

I'll have to go back home and listen to those Filmore dates, since I can't keep them straight enough in my head to know which one to vote for deaf.

Somewhere around I've got a boot of him doing a lot of the Kilimanjaro stuff, I think at Montreaux, that's one of my all time faves, but I'll have to sort through a buncha cdrs to track it down. Maybe my dad knows, since he's the one that gave it to me...

I eat cannibals, Friday, 14 December 2007 19:48 (sixteen years ago) link

there's a great semi-legal concert from 1960 Stockholm w/ Coltrane just before he left the band. Honestly, though, Trane dominates so much that it may as well be his album rather than Miles'.

tylerw, Friday, 14 December 2007 19:50 (sixteen years ago) link

Dark fucking Magus.

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 17 December 2007 00:43 (sixteen years ago) link

i voted for My Funny Valentine -- Naive Teen Idol is correct, the title track is off the charts. Especially like it when someone in the audience screams in rapture -- which must've been weird for a jazz concert in 1964, but I feel what that dude was feeling, for sure.

The intro is all solo, to boot. The best part on that is when Miles does this crazy run to finish the head of the melody and does this long, wobbly bend back down that feels like it's bending forever -- and when he finally reaches the root note, the band comes in for the first time.

Also the introduction by Mort Fega is hysterical -- doesn't really sound like the kind of guy Miles hung with much.

Naive Teen Idol, Monday, 17 December 2007 03:44 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't think I've heard this album.

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 17 December 2007 12:00 (sixteen years ago) link

Magus

Bill Magill, Monday, 17 December 2007 15:05 (sixteen years ago) link

I really like Dark Magus too.

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 17 December 2007 17:33 (sixteen years ago) link

i'll be well shocked if Aghartha wins but it gets my vote just barely over Live/Evil (and Plugged Nickel)

outdoor_miner, Monday, 17 December 2007 22:10 (sixteen years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 00:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Agharta probably should win but you know ILX. People complained it wasn't in the other poll so they might vote here for it.

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 00:04 (sixteen years ago) link

What will get the lurker vote?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 01:53 (sixteen years ago) link

In theory Agharta but in reality you can never tell anymore. Possibly people are less familiar with other options and will just go for it unlike the other miles poll. But wouldn't be surprised if Pangaea wins.
Unless there's been a high profile live reissue out this year.

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 08:31 (sixteen years ago) link

Dark Magus again

Myonga Vön Bontee, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 09:23 (sixteen years ago) link

That's your vote or what will get the lurker vote?

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 14:12 (sixteen years ago) link

you know, i've never heard the Blackhawk stuff -- which is odd, since I really love Wynton Kelly. Anybody vote for that? (Looks like you can get the box set pretty cheap these days ... perhaps I shall order it.)

tylerw, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 15:14 (sixteen years ago) link

Not heard it either

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 18:07 (sixteen years ago) link

Blackhawk is some good stuff (and yes, easy to find cheap). There are some fleeting moments where you almost forget that it's the '61 band and not the '65 band. But Hank Mobley just never did it for me.

So my vote's going to Plugged Nickel. I can't think of anything -- even in his electric era -- that's as dynamic and tense and constantly threatening to go off the rails.

Sara Sara Sara, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 18:45 (sixteen years ago) link

ILX System, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 00:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Haha. One vote for At Carnegie Hall. Mine!~

sam500, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 00:10 (sixteen years ago) link

Joint winner then. Thought Pangaea might be the one pushing it for votes.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 07:18 (sixteen years ago) link

A couple of votes for 80s stuff too I see.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 13:47 (sixteen years ago) link

Justice is served.

JN$OT, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 13:49 (sixteen years ago) link

I wonder if Dark Magus had been titled Live In New York if it would have gotten a third of the love it gets or, say, half the votes it gets here.

Naive Teen Idol, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 14:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Why do you say that?

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 17:36 (sixteen years ago) link

That makes very little sense. I voted for Magus and my three favorite live albums are titled Europe '72, Live at Leeds and Made in Japan. Real creative stuff. Remove your head from your ass.

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 17:40 (sixteen years ago) link

Live at the Apollo (Parts 1,2 & 3) to thread!

Ioannis, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 17:42 (sixteen years ago) link

four weeks pass...

lol, i was just cranking Dark Magus and had the kettle on -- thought at first that the piercing whistle was one of Miles' one-note organ solos. heh.

tylerw, Friday, 18 January 2008 17:24 (sixteen years ago) link

I missed this thread. Dark Magus bugs me. I want to hear the Montreaux thing. I would have voted Live Evil. In Concert: Live at Philharmonic has a deservedly spotty reputation, but I like it.

Trip Maker, Friday, 18 January 2008 17:50 (sixteen years ago) link

i dunno, i think that Dark Magus band is pretty ferocious -- is that all the same players as Agharta/Pangaea? The Philharmonic set isn't terrible, but it does sound a lot more hesitant, like no one is quite sure what they should be doing. I like it, though, just not as much as other electric Miles live discs.

tylerw, Friday, 18 January 2008 17:56 (sixteen years ago) link

* Dark Magus (1974) 10
* Agharta (1975) 10

that's about right

Kind of shocked I never knew that Sam Rivers did a stint in the band replacing George Coleman, let alone that there was actually a record of it (Live in Tokyo).

hey boys, suppers on me, our video just went bacterial (Hurting 2), Saturday, 29 January 2011 01:49 (thirteen years ago) link

Speaking of Sam Rivers in the band, there is a forthcoming release double cd release of the other two concerts he did in Japan: http://forums.allaboutjazz.com/showthread.php?t=47769

Jim, Saturday, 5 February 2011 01:21 (thirteen years ago) link

that miles - live in tokyo is v nice! Sam Rivers is kinda underrated, i think.
and i agree w/Edward III 3 posts up but nitpick DM as a 9 (or A not A+), and prefer Agharta slightly.
electric Miles personal pref. in order (not counting in a silent way, 'cuz it's so unique, musically speaking:
Agharta
Jack Johnson
Dark Magus

In the past I passed over My Funny Valentine, because all the fast tunes from the concert are on Four + More, and ballads are boring, right? Turns out it's incredibly lovely.

I had the Seven Steps box set that puts the concert back into its original running order and have never checked out the two albums the way they were originally issued. I should do that.

The original albums are so cohesive that it's almost hard to imagine going back and forth between the ballads and hyperjazz tunes. I'd like to hear the original concert order though.

Like Bitches Brew, Live-Evil had a Quadraphonic release with a very different mix. It’s excellent

In Concert (1972) is ridiculously underrated, but it desperately needs a remix/remaster

I think in concert sounds that way because of how it was recorded.. maybe some AI thing can recreate the full frequency spectrum
