"fighting over colours.... all that gangs shit's for dumb motherfuckers!"

CLASSIC.

c obv - just gave a friend the ultra big time lp as a going away present

jhøshea, Monday, 17 December 2007 22:28 (sixteen years ago) link

As MCs go, Tim was pretty wack. The production on the album was pretty nice and the remixes for Fuck Compton and Bronx Nigga (esp the latter) were pretty hot.

Lolpez, Monday, 17 December 2007 22:31 (sixteen years ago) link

ced gee made him sound immortal.

mr x, Monday, 17 December 2007 22:39 (sixteen years ago) link

Come on, Lolpez, the way his voice cracks on "dumb motherfuckers" alone is enough to make him classic. In terms of emotional investment, he makes even Chuck D sound like he's holding back.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 10:56 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm also proud to say I own a 12-inch of "Fuck Compton" with an entirely white label except for the Ruffhouse logo and the words "TIM DOG."

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 10:58 (sixteen years ago) link

I'd never heard "Fuck Compton" until now. ...WAU

The Reverend, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 11:09 (sixteen years ago) link

Timi Yuro, he does sound like a beast, but some of those rhymes are laughable. Rhyming "shit" with "shit" just seemed lazy. I bought the album and saw him live back in 93 (and I'm from LA). I just don't think he had the chops to match his voice. Also, the homothug shit on Wild in the Penile is pretty WTF.

Now *I* wish I was a friend of Tim Dog. There'd be not only a name drop in my sake, but anyone who dared mock it would get fucked by Tim Dog.

Mackro Mackro, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 17:19 (sixteen years ago) link

On the one song where he talks about having sexual fantasies about the girls in EnVogue, the line that kills me every time is "The one with the fat ass / Heh, they ALL got a fat ass"

Dimension 5ive, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 17:21 (sixteen years ago) link

"good luck to those who cross dog and the reverend
cause when i'm done with you, your pain would NEVER end"

Dog is a name that is seldom used
But sometimes the name is always abused

Lolpez, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 18:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Rhyming "shit" with "shit" just seemed lazy GENIUS

mr x, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 22:40 (sixteen years ago) link

I stand corrected.

Lolpez, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 23:25 (sixteen years ago) link

the song about en vogue in the dressing room is classic to end all classics.

One of my very favorite moments in hip-hop and the above is dead on. I hear tears in it too which, of course, he wipes away by the next line.

aw shit. was just listening to him yesterday.

one of the greatest rappers. the lyrics didn't take anything away from his performance. i mean, yeah, if he had spent more time on them then maybe he'd be up there with big l and biggie. but it doesn't matter. he was what he was and he didn't give a fuck.

KitevsPill, Friday, 15 February 2013 17:00 (eleven years ago) link

But what about rappers who weren’t skilled, but immensely entertaining? Twenty years later, “personality rap” pays the bills and that term usually applies to the majority of likable rappers that can’t really rap worth a shit (insert just about any current acclaimed rapper here). Tim Dog got points for being both bold and the poster child for Mayor David Dinkins-era NYC – an NYC overrun with robberies, racially-charged fights, and hair-trigger violence – but most people back then said the same thing with regard to his skill level: “Yeah, but he can’t rap.”

this totally made me think of the recent Chief Keef thread lol
