S/D Will Oldham Covers

Interesting topic this, given his tendency to cover his own back catalogue. He's also just released an album of alternate versions of the songs on 'The Letting Go' which, so far, I'm loving (in contrast to the album itself).

There's a full list of covers here

How does that "Wai Songs" (or whatever it's called) compare to "The Letting Go"? Are the songs radically different? I think the "Wai" disc were the first recordings of those songs, no?

Oh, also - search:
- "Puff the Magic Dragon"
- "Can't Take that Away" (Mariah Carey)

Admittedly, I've only listened to the letting go a couple of times. I'm not too much of a fan of his more recent stuff. My faves are the first two Palace albums. I find the newer stuff (basically, the albums after I see a darkness) a tiny bit bland. Wai notes is great because it's a much rougher recording. There's quite a bit of microphone hiss and tape glitches. This seems to make it a more direct and involving listen, for me at least.

This new one - Ask Forgiveness - is terribly bland. Even the R Kelly cover. Maybe that's what you get for making an album with any of the members of Espers that aren't the drummer.

Oh, I like the R Kelly cover. The others haven't inspired me to listen to them more than once but the R Kelly one has had a few spins.

That Micky Newbury cover, "I Only Came To Hear the Music," on "Ask Forgiveness," is really awesome - I've never heard the original, but I just love the song; the lyrics are so great.

I thought the new album of covers was really good. A nice surprise after the almost completely terrible Tortoise collaboration.

The Letting Go is a really fantastic album too if you spend enough time with it. I've been kinda lukewarm with pretty much every album he's done post Ease Down the Road on initial listens (I guess that's just Superwolf and The Letting Go), but they really unfold with repeated listens.

Anyway, the answer to this thread has to be "Horses".
