Seeing Scott Seward's collection has made me realise that I have a fetish for seeing shelves full of records.

Rib Dinner, Friday, 11 January 2008 16:06 (sixteen years ago) link

Probably because I am living and working so far away from where my own is stored.

Rib Dinner, Friday, 11 January 2008 16:06 (sixteen years ago) link

My vinyl is all in a locked storage space on Van Dam Street off Varrick and in my mother's Long Island basement.

haha all of my cd cover art is locked up in that same storage space on van dam. i have to go over there today to put away out christmas stuff

Just got offed, Friday, 11 January 2008 16:27 (sixteen years ago) link

All my records and all but maybe 20 CDs have been in a storage space for six months while we look for a new place to live. This was tolerable until my ipod crashed because the backup is in storage too. So for me this thread is more like, Take a mental picture of your record collection and weep.

Well, this isn't a recent picture (it's from last year), but here are some of the discs...

Will - yes, they're Ikea Traby. We have rather a lot of Traby cubes (some with doors and drawer inserts) - books, DVDs, magazines, kids' shoes, camera gear, financial files, photo albums, they've all ended up in Traby. If I look at my Flickr stats my most popular Yahoo Image referrals are searches for "Ikea Traby"!

This is the only photo I have showing the CD cabinets - this was well over a year ago (you can see yet more Traby on the right). We seem to have set up so many obstacles to prevent the kids getting in there that we're fairly discouraged from going in there ourselves. As a result we just have about 100 CDs permanently stacked in various places and that's all we play...

and these ones which are on the steps to the basement so my cat won't scratch them. im too lazy to take them all the way up to the third floor since i'll just be taking them out for my gig next week again.

ah, size is irrelevant (er, I'm talking about records here). I have 35 years or so of collecting behind me, much of it spent on 50-cent goodwill crap. it looks so much more impressive than it actually is, trust me!

Does that copy of England's Newest Hitmakers have the poster?

Thus Sang Freud, Saturday, 12 January 2008 05:03 (sixteen years ago) link

Also I'm coonnnnstantly having to upgrade CD racks; I have about 350 (CDs} right now and would like something (preferably Ikea) that'd hold up to 6 or 700. Any recommendations, folks? I have a Robin shelf from Ikea (see http://www.hoerspiele.de/specials/aufbewahrung/bilder/a004-1.jpg ) and I can't stand how narrow the shelves are; I wish I could remove the middle barrier.

Stevie D, Saturday, 12 January 2008 05:06 (sixteen years ago) link

actually, Thus Sang, that Stones cover on display is a clock! I have a proper version of the album, but no poster.

sw00ds, Saturday, 12 January 2008 05:10 (sixteen years ago) link

sw00ds, Saturday, 12 January 2008 05:15 (sixteen years ago) link

Scott wins. He has the biggest, um, penis!

So what's the box set two to the right of Rhino's Sugar Hill box (and after a Stones one, I believe)? It looks like it says WHITNEY. And it looks like it's on Arista. A Whitney Houston box set??

And why on earth are you KEEPING two Spector boxes? It's an awful box! (Well, okay not AWFUL. But definitely could be one disc.)

LOVE this thread!! And where can we see Seward's collection?

It was my home up until two years ago, when my one-year-old started getting more mobile and a one-bedroom apartment wasn't cutting it anymore. That's actually a photo from the real estate listing. The baby toys were all jammed in a pile just to the right of the cabinet for the picture -- it was rarely that tidy that year.

early rejecter, are those magnepans?

naus, Tuesday, 25 March 2014 08:07 (ten years ago) link

i was thinking the same thinking the same thing, was recently deciding whether to go with Magnepans or in-wall speakers in a living room. The Maggies sound amazing as long as you stay in the sweet spot between the speakers.

I was all set to buy some Ikea Expedits for my vinyl collection after i move soon, but this thread has convinced me my records deserve real furniture. I have a hutch that looks like the top part of Evan's setup, except that all the doors are glass. It's currently in the dining room displaying fancy china we never use. I'd rather display rekkerds....

Lee626, Tuesday, 25 March 2014 12:00 (ten years ago) link

Yep, they're Magnepans. They sound great, but like Lee says they do have a sweet spot -- and I was surprised at how small the sweet spot is. With this particular model (MMG) it's not so much your position between the speakers, but rather the vertical position of your ears -- i.e. they have to be right around the vertical center of the speakers for the best sound. I mounted them so that they're at the proper height when you're seated in the room, but it's amazing how dramatically the sound changes when you stand up. So they're much better suited to dedicated listening than just having music playing as you move around your home. And you really need a subwoofer and a relatively powerful amp to get the most from them. My brother-in-law has a pair of the big floor-standers (not sure which model) and they seem to be much more forgiving regarding positioning and sound fine without a subwoofer. Of course they're also as big as two adults, so not so easy to find a place for them in a lot of rooms.

one year passes...

I have a large, walk-in cupboard in my living room which I'm starting to think of using to store my CDs and records, as I'm sick of them commandeering the entire living room wall space. I'm looking for inspiration - has anyone done this kind of thing? Or got any impressive photos from elsewhere?

The cupboard is a good size (I still need to measure it though) and very tall (Glasgow tenement), so if I got custom shelving put in up the ceiling it would probably hold everything with a modest space in the middle to walk in and select things.
