Jordan, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 18:48 (sixteen years ago) link

it's all about the snare on 'top back' for me

goodlife, seriously guys? i was going to say that it's the worst on the record by far. that beat is such garbage, and it's got that transition that's really random/non-sequitur and not in a cool way.

Jordan, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 19:18 (sixteen years ago) link

top for me:

king back
get it
front back
i'm talkin' to you
what you know
i'm straight

you know who is pretty hot too.

Jordan, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 19:20 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm on record as hating 95% of what Pharrell has done in the past four years, but "Goodlife" is in that other 5%. The transition is kinda wonky but that's part of its charm, I think. And it's a nice breather from some tracks that might be better but sound a little samey in the context of the album.

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 19:26 (sixteen years ago) link

i like the common verse!

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 5 February 2008 19:27 (sixteen years ago) link

i'm talkin to you

rest of a top 5 would be

get it
i'm straight
what you know
king back

I need to listen to this album

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 00:13 (sixteen years ago) link

"I'm Talkin' To You" sounds like the fucking apocalypse

The Reverend, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 00:41 (sixteen years ago) link

i love how he really lays way back into that beat on the second verse, dragging way behind it, and then builds up to superball velocity in the third verse. there was a week or so where i listened to that song 6 or 7 times a day.

tipsy mothra, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 00:52 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, waiting to bust into the double-time flow = good move, TI

The Reverend, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 00:56 (sixteen years ago) link

i like the four-way tie.

sailor goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 25 August 2009 19:57 (fourteen years ago) link

A drop top, flip flop, shine as the chrome glow
When T.I.P. pop out the roof "What he up in Herndon Homes fo'?"
Along though, shit he jus' doin' what he known for
Blowin' 'dro, 24, livin' how the song go
Rubber burnt, turn the corners, beatin' like a Congo
You try to jack I pull the strap, it's +ASAP+ pronto
King of the South, every hood's head honcho
I'm Westside certified, go run a fuckin' hood yo

sailor goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 25 August 2009 19:59 (fourteen years ago) link

These 26's keep the attention of bitches

sailor goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 25 August 2009 20:00 (fourteen years ago) link

Even though "Live in the Sky" is just about as sappy as it gets, I still really dig it. Smooth beat.

pearsonic, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 22:03 (fourteen years ago) link

I think this is my favourite album artwork of el decade. Also, killer album.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 25 August 2009 22:09 (fourteen years ago) link

eleven months pass...

"Nigga, shut up, you stink, ok? always talkin shit, you make me sick, with your broke ass. You ain't got shit, you ain't shit, your feet stink, nigga, you nasty, you dirty, you look bad, you talk stupid, you dumb. say that shit to T.I.!"

one of my favorite T.I. skits ever.

three years pass...

playin this now. "Top Back" I think is my overall fav but I've always loved the opening to "King Back":

"I welcome you and get acquainted with the youngest in charge
Respected from East to West like he was running the mob
Dictating, ain't taking orders from no one but God
I know you niggas is broke 'cause I know what you charge"

= 6 or 7 times a morning, on the way to work, to stand outside and let it finish before i went in

I was doing leg exercises at the gym when this song came on my IPod cellphone and I was tryin to pump my feet at the same tempo as his but ran out of gas. good motivational music!

getting strange ass all around the globe (Neanderthal), Thursday, 24 April 2014 04:27 (nine years ago) link

feel like T.I. just missed out on the GOAT conversation barely? kinda seems like it

nova, Thursday, 24 April 2014 07:12 (nine years ago) link

if he'd followed up King with something essentially rather than T.I. vs TIP he'd have had a strong trilogy but he's treaded water too long since. his new one at times seems like trap-by-numbers.

getting strange ass all around the globe (Neanderthal), Thursday, 24 April 2014 22:21 (nine years ago) link

xp Prison time right as he entered his commercial prime, then brief return, then another jail sentence. He was never the same after that.

voodoo chili, Thursday, 24 April 2014 22:45 (nine years ago) link

See I really liked T.I. vs T.I.P. actually. Paper Trail was where I started to lose interest, because writing his lyrics down seemed to sap his swag(ga) and it struck me as a similar album to Urban Legend, being a messy mix of crossover stuff & street bangers, but worse.

he's had some dope guest verses since but yeah no real expectations for any full-length projects these days

nova, Thursday, 24 April 2014 22:45 (nine years ago) link

I love Urban Legend. I actually became with Paper Trails cos I wasn't really as into the 'souf' then and I liked it as a purely pop rap album but after hearing his harder stuff it was harder to return to. there is some really solid shit on it though, it's just the "Whatever You Likes" and "Live Your Lifes" are too plentiful (though oddly I like the latter even if it's a bit corny).

getting strange ass all around the globe (Neanderthal), Thursday, 24 April 2014 22:47 (nine years ago) link

"Swagga," "What Up" and "No Matter What" are the three songs I mess with on that album

nova, Friday, 25 April 2014 01:54 (nine years ago) link

I prefer the production on King and Trap Muzik (at times I think he veers to closely to bounce rather than his ATL-lane) but he's pretty on point as an MC. not as lyrically tight as on the prior album but he still spits.

the thing I hate about him now is that while simplicity worked in his favor in the older days, he had a lot of focus. even though his word play was often monosyllabic, he painted vivid pictures of street life, and in the Trap Muzik days especially, really nailed the cognitive dissonance of being a pusher. even by King when he'd abandoned that lane, his braggadocio came off self-assured and effortless.

I finally listened to Trouble Man the other day and while it wasn't a terrible listen, his persona has gone so one-dimensional that he might as well be any generic street rapper at this point. His references to trap life are as stock as can be right now, just rote one-dimensional exercises. None of the focus or precision he used to have. The environments he portrayed used to be very human and lived in, but every player in his songs is a cipher now, including him. Some rappers retain their ability to write compelling street rap even after both feet have firmly left that life, but Clifford's not one of 'em. His voice still sounds cool and all but his energy just comes across as calculated now.
