titchyschneiderMk2, Friday, 8 February 2008 13:36 (sixteen years ago) link

Where is the LOVE for Gregory Isaacs?

plus Dennis Brown, Beres Hammond and many others.

curmudgeon, Friday, 8 February 2008 14:14 (sixteen years ago) link

im talking uk lovers rock though...

titchyschneiderMk2, Friday, 8 February 2008 14:19 (sixteen years ago) link

I do love Silly Games janet kay--"silly games" classic or dud?

Daniel Giraffe, Friday, 8 February 2008 14:25 (sixteen years ago) link

That's a great track, yeah. Her version of Loving You is quite funny for her botched attempt at the really high bit.

chap, Friday, 8 February 2008 14:30 (sixteen years ago) link

i know silly games. thats super-classic. as well as lovers in general, id like to get a list of songs that were big uk chart hits, tracks like uptown top ranking etc..

fuck! i had that comp - dont know if i still do.

titchyschneiderMk2, Friday, 8 February 2008 14:43 (sixteen years ago) link

Great comp! My pick would be Lorna Bennett's utterly gorgeous Breakfast in Bed.

chap, Friday, 8 February 2008 14:44 (sixteen years ago) link

thing about that comp though is that it doesnt have all the uk lovers rock im after, apart from a few songs here and there i think.

I'm not in a position to maintain you,
the way that you're accustomed to,
Can't take you out to fancy places,
Like other fellows that I know can do,
I'm only able to romance you,
& make you tingle with delight,
Financially, I'm a pauper,
but when it comes to lovin I'm alright.
Alright alright

Don't show me what you're friends are wearing,
I really don't want to see,
Don't tell me what your friends are buying, girl
'Cause money doesn't grow on trees.
I got so many patches on my clothes, girl
A hole in the bottom of shoe
Financially, I'm a pauper,
but when it comes to lovin I'm alright.
Alright alright

You do really think I can buy you girl,
or drive you in a GT car,
If you're hungry, girl, I can't feed you,
for my money, girl, you won't get far,
tell me about the things that excite you,
that makes you tingle with delight,
Tell me where to hold & touch you,
So you got to tell me, I'm alright.
Alright alright

I found a Janet Kay 7" inside the electric meter cupboard of my old flat. Fuck know what it was doing in there, and it was filthy & had bits of white paint on it, but I cleaned it up and kept it anyway.

"Silly Games" is one of my very favorite things to which I was introduced courtesy of ILM

"im talking uk lovers rock though..."

If you're restricting yourself to musicians who actually originate from the UK then you probably want to start with Aswad and Maxi Priest - at least while we're waiting for Dr. C to arrive on thread.

Stewart Osborne, Friday, 8 February 2008 15:43 (sixteen years ago) link

If you're restricting yourself to musicians who actually originate from the UK

isnt 'lovers rock' a uk genre?

titchyschneiderMk2, Friday, 8 February 2008 15:53 (sixteen years ago) link

The genre supposedly originated in the UK, but a substantial proportion (I would suggest the vast majority) of the musicians who were / have been associated with it (e.g. Horace Andy, Ken Boothe, Dennis Brown, John Holt, Gregory Isaacs, Freddie McGregor, Sugar Minott, Delroy Wilson) were actually Jamaican.

Stewart Osborne, Friday, 8 February 2008 16:01 (sixteen years ago) link

If you can find them the three volumes of Rewind Selecta Lovers compiled by David Rodigan are the absolute fucking touchstone for this stuff.

When Tower was having their big sell-off I totally coveted that record (it was $27 or something.) By the time it got to 60% or whatever it was already gone. :(

Alex in SF, Friday, 8 February 2008 18:54 (sixteen years ago) link

I was one of the ones that jumped...(5 bucks!)

xpost D.A.M. I just came here to say the same thing. It's an all time classic with so many great songs and this hazy flutey Lee Perry production which I'd say ranks as one of his best. I really like 'Congratulations' and especially 'Don't Burn Your Bridges'. I've been trying to work out what the bass is doing on the latter song for some years and there's something about the harmonics on that that I can't work out.

one of the greatest names for a band ever, and one of the greatest lovers rock groups?

Paul, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 15:08 (nine years ago) link

Xp dog latin -- I love Perry's production but I think it's Susan's voice that is my favorite element. So ethereal and strange.

Nice n Easy is a cover, isn't it? I'm sure I've heard it before, but I can't place it. Possibly orig a bossa nova track?

I love this cover.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 19:29 (nine years ago) link

I knew the Horace Andy version of Nice and Easy before the Cadogan one. I agree about the voice, it's amazing, and I like the effect that's been put on it. I love the disco ness of that record, but just in songs like Shame but the overall vibe and feeling

monoprix & dimensions (dog latin), Wednesday, 3 September 2014 20:23 (nine years ago) link

Not just in songs like Shame, that should have said.

Elizabeth Archer is all time. The dub is insane. i had always thought it was a Dennis Bovell mix but turns out it isn't.

This is a current big favourite. A cover of the Rose Royce classic that perfectly suits being adapted to a Reggae track.
