Lori Black for Ozma and her old band Clown Alley.

chaki, Monday, 18 February 2008 05:22 (sixteen years ago) link

Kevin's basslines were the best, plus he nailed all the old stuff.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 18 February 2008 05:24 (sixteen years ago) link

boring ol Preston is guna take this

chaki, Monday, 18 February 2008 05:27 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm votin Jared

Mackro Mackro, Monday, 18 February 2008 07:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, Preston didn't really do much with them except record the shittiest album with the word "Melvins" on it, and then follow Buzz's lead on Lysol. If you vote for Joe Preston, you are admitting you don't know what the fuck you're talking about.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 18 February 2008 07:20 (sixteen years ago) link

Deutrom had a cowboy hat, so he wins.

StanM, Monday, 18 February 2008 07:22 (sixteen years ago) link

JOE PRESTON, FUCK YOU WHINEY

(j/k voted lorax)

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Monday, 18 February 2008 08:40 (sixteen years ago) link

I never saw them with Matt. I think I'll have to abstain from this poll. They've always been great.

Nate Carson, Monday, 18 February 2008 09:01 (sixteen years ago) link

I always get David Scott Stone mixed up with Yngwie Malmsteen's old singer Jeff Scott Soto. Anyway, Lori because she played on the best albums. When did Trevor Dunn play with them?

Matt #2, Monday, 18 February 2008 10:57 (sixteen years ago) link

recently

chaki, Monday, 18 February 2008 11:04 (sixteen years ago) link

Except for Dunn and Lukin, I've seen them live with all of the above.

Stone was my close second actually, because the Jello & Melvins show I saw over a year ago, Stone majorly rocked it.

I don't think any of the bassists are less than awesome, btw. Lori was the most entertaining, but Jared's about as entertaining, and I think he's been listening to Melvins since he was five years old, so he plays like he has the entire catalog in his head.

Mackro Mackro, Monday, 18 February 2008 16:46 (sixteen years ago) link

Also, Jared's the only bassist I've seen been given relatively prominent vocal duties, which he does very well. It's not "bassing", but as bassist, that figured into my vote.

Mackro Mackro, Monday, 18 February 2008 16:48 (sixteen years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 04:08 (sixteen years ago) link

Lori, for all reasons.

contenderizer, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 05:33 (sixteen years ago) link

voted Lorax, of course, for she rocked the universe when I saw 'em the first and best time, back in '91 at the dingy hole-in-the-wall Edge Of The Looking Glass at 13th and Wabash in Chicago (total gentrification city now) with Helmet opening... BEST SHOW EVER!!

Lori "Lorax" Black - Bass guitar (1987-1991, 1992)

The comma means "Joe Preston was such a poor choice for our band that we returned to our bass player with drug problems in less than a year"

jhøshea øfftm x billion

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 07:16 (sixteen years ago) link

I've heard enough dirt about Joe from Buzzo circa Houdini era interviews. (words "thief", "creep", being used a lot.) Then again, Joe roadied for lots of NW bands, Unwound in particular, and it doesn't sound like any of those bands got thieved, per se. Met both each briefly. Both seemed really nice and unthieving. &hibar;\O_o/&hibar;

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 18:50 (sixteen years ago) link

He also got fired for "hygenic differences"

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 18:52 (sixteen years ago) link

yah the melvin def hate joe preston - but uh they may not be the nicest people

jhøshea, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 18:54 (sixteen years ago) link

I mean, Preston's work with Thrones and Earth is SunnO))) is swell, but saying he's the best Melvins bassist is like saying Mark McKinney was the best Saturday Night Live cast member.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 18:55 (sixteen years ago) link

...like having an opinion you disagree with?

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 18:56 (sixteen years ago) link

an especially shitty opinion i disagree with

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 18:59 (sixteen years ago) link

i don't even think the bassit in the melvins really MATTERS all that much to their sound.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 19:01 (sixteen years ago) link

bassiSt

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 19:01 (sixteen years ago) link

alls im saying is if you look at the music joe preston has played besides the melvins - and how the melvins sound changed while he was in the band - its pretty obv that he had way more influence on their music than any of the rest of their bassists who tend to be more in the just along for the ride category.

jhøshea, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 19:02 (sixteen years ago) link

it is pretty hilarious to see whiney get all riled up over this completely inconsequential question

jhøshea, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 19:03 (sixteen years ago) link

they r my fave band :(

and they turned into a major label rock band after he left. if anyone had influence on post-Joe Preston Melvins it was the Atlantic Records A&R dept.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 19:07 (sixteen years ago) link

aww whiney theyre one of my fav bands ever too since i was like 15

jhøshea, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 19:09 (sixteen years ago) link

THIS QUESTION IS PITTING BROTHER AGAINST BROTHER

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 19:09 (sixteen years ago) link

jhosh, what are you getting at? "Boris" was kinda the template of the Joe Preston era Melvins, and that was when Lori was still in the band.

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:11 (sixteen years ago) link

Even saying that, "Eye Flys" was a template for that too, and that one predated Lori. I'm not seeing where the "Joe changed the Melvins" thing is happenin', all respect to Joe, Melvins, etc.

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:13 (sixteen years ago) link

the whole atmospheric thing (1st side) on lysol is pretty different - and i <3 <3 <3 that album

jhøshea, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:17 (sixteen years ago) link

wikipedia is saying maybe he wrote the last track?

jhøshea, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Even though there are no writing credits, a long standing rumor is that bassist Joe Preston wrote the song "With Teeth" and that the name "Joe" printed on the back of the album was in a much larger font than "King Buzzo" or "Dale" because Osborne had grown weary of Preston's repeated requests to be allowed more input and given more credit. Preston was fired from the Melvins soon after Lysol was released.

lol

jhøshea, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:19 (sixteen years ago) link

The atmospheric thing on Lysol did more to change the trajectory of the band Boris than anything. The Melvins never really looked back on it too much.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:20 (sixteen years ago) link

Lysol is best Melvins album too.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:21 (sixteen years ago) link

There's also the Joe Preston album (from the Melvins solo albums). At least you can be sure Joe wrote the songs on that one.

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:22 (sixteen years ago) link

yah that what im saying abt how the band changed when joe joined and left see

also: The atmospheric thing on Lysol did more to change the trajectory of the band Boris than anything. + earth + sunn etc

jhøshea, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:22 (sixteen years ago) link

earth especially especially

jhøshea, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:23 (sixteen years ago) link

they played the shit out of Lysol's first track live for a time after Lysol's release, without Preston.

sexyDancer, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:24 (sixteen years ago) link

The band changed every 1-3 albums since the 80s.

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:26 (sixteen years ago) link

yah that was so awz (and repeatedly got booed off the stage opening for primus doing it) xp

jhøshea, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:26 (sixteen years ago) link

There's also the Joe Preston album (from the Melvins solo albums). At least you can be sure Joe wrote the songs on that one.

Which, as I've said, was the shittiest album ever with the word Melvins on it.

Here's Buzz (interviewed by me) on the Joe Preston record:

Joe did his as a homework assignment. He wasn’t into it at all. We couldn’t believe that he wasn’t interested in this. That was the beginning of the end for him. It’s terrible. His heart wasn’t in it and he was a dumbass for doing that. He did it in about an afternoon.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:29 (sixteen years ago) link

s'true his solo album wasnt the best

jhøshea, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:31 (sixteen years ago) link

I wish Dale Crover was longer. It's about 12 minutes long, but a good 12 minutes. I guess there's Altamont.

Who doesn't think King Buzzo was the best of the three? "Isabella" and "Skeeter" are among my favorite Melvs tracks of all time.

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Dale's is the best. Buzzo's close second.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:41 (sixteen years ago) link

the drumming on isabella ...

sexyDancer, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:42 (sixteen years ago) link

LOL

Stag (Atlantic, 1996) *****
Buzz: I knew after this record we were finished with Atlantic. That’s when they told us we need to party more with people from radio sales. If I’m gonna do blow with the guy from Sugar Ray, I better be able to fist him up the ass too.

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:48 (sixteen years ago) link

I wish Buzz could feed me one-lines for all my articles.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 21:00 (sixteen years ago) link

He seems like a prick. I've seen other articles where he comes off like a dick too.

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 21:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Buzzo in person >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Buzzo in print

He's a pretty non-B.S., funny friendly guy. Flattened to print, all of that is missed.

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 21:51 (sixteen years ago) link

Best impression of Buzzo was on, of all places, Fox. He was on some news of the day panel there. Search for "buzzo fox" on YouTube.

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 21:52 (sixteen years ago) link

"Flattened to print, all of that is missed."

Yes. He comes across as very mean spirited, especially in regard to the multitudes of bassists the band has had.

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 21:52 (sixteen years ago) link

Also

Tones On Tail >>> Bauhaus >> Love & Rockets >> David J. >>>> Peter Murphy >>>>>>> Daniel Ash

Keep in mind I love love love Bauhaus, so this is sayin a lot.

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 22:12 (sixteen years ago) link

shit, wrong thread. haha

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 22:12 (sixteen years ago) link

Buzz has been real nice the times ive met him. If Preston is responsible for boring Sunno and Earth bullshit metal than he should be destroyed.

chaki, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 22:36 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't know, but it seems unfait to credit JP with Lysol's drone/noise tendencies. Lysol came out after the Eggnog EP, on which Lori played bass. And Eggnog's got Charmicarmicat, which out hippos Lysol by a long shot.

The drone thing seems like something the Melvins messed with for a while, then dropped, and Joe just happened to happen along sometime in the middle of that phase.

contenderizer, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 23:09 (sixteen years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 00:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Buzz and Dale play bass on alot of the recordings, so maybe they should have been included in the poll.
I voted for Mark - mostly cuz Stag is so great.

Mike Dixn, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 00:53 (sixteen years ago) link

Joe should only be held responsible for Thrones. That's his band.

Having said that, I think Lysol is the best Melvins record.

The one time I saw Melvins with Joe, Buzz and Dale left the stage after 20 minutes and Joe kept playing solo for another 5 minutes. He's a trooper.

It makes me very happy to see Jared in this band. He deserves it more than anyone.

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 01:35 (sixteen years ago) link

i deserve it more.

chaki, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 02:53 (sixteen years ago) link

summing up: whiney has a hate-on for joe preston. nobody likes the joe preston solo ep but me.

eight years pass...

I love Dunn's upright bass work on Freak Puke. What a cool album! Is he on any other latter-day Melvins (Lite) albums I might have missed?

Wimmels, Tuesday, 1 March 2016 22:28 (eight years ago) link

dunn-o ¯\(°_o)/¯

i guess i'm not too surprised that buzz was a dick abt joe preston, but i'm shocked (shocked!) that so few stepped up to defend it itt. only one of the three solo recs with something to say, and easily the most forward-thinking, thanks mostly to "hands first flower". "bricklebrit" is pretty cool, too, rewards VOLYUME.

king buzzo = a couple nice melvins demos padded out w/ a throwaway noise piece and an awesome (awesome!) dave grohl goof. dale crover, while surprisingly song-driven & much more consistently "melvins-y" than the other two, winds up pretty forgettable, imo.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iBi4UbWpR0

i mean, they all sound like half-assed homework assignments, but side 2 of joe's ep has held up real damn well over the years.

six months pass...

Love to re-read this thread

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 28 September 2016 16:02 (seven years ago) link

Since this poll, they've added Jeff Pinkus, Steve McDonald and Dale himself to the exploding bass player slot

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 28 September 2016 16:02 (seven years ago) link

I don't think I'd have voted for Trevor Dunn but I really like him with the Melvins

Wimmels, Wednesday, 28 September 2016 16:10 (seven years ago) link

Trevor Dunn probably is the best bassist as bassist.

I'm thinking best period of Melvins might be a bit more under debate as the power quartet with Big Business and those records I think are as good as anything they have done.
