the Best Nu-Metal Song

Sure, it's a horrible genre, but I find that even in the worst of them there are certain songs that are perfectly enjoyable, even great, and nu-metal is no exception (by the way, who coined this term? He should be congratulated- it's a rare occasion that a genre gets a name as idiotic as the music itself). I will submit "Engine Number 9" by the Deftones (or is it just Deftones?) as the best nu-metal song I've yet to hear. None of the stupid whispering Chino is so fond of is found on this one, just good ol' tortured, indecipherable rapping and singing.

PS John Darinelle posts here! How cool is that? I was up late last night looking for a good music discussion forum, and I find out that the esteemed editor of that most excellent internet music zine, Last Plane to Jakarta, posts here, which of course makes this a great music forum. In fact it was he who inspired this post, by his claim that Slipknot's "Left Behind" is a great song. I'll go so far as to say it's pretty good, but it doesn't touch this one.

Bitches, by Mindless Self Indulgence. "This is how it should be done." Indeed.

Prude, Sunday, 5 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

"The Fake Sound of Progress" by Lostprophets. Mainly because if you strip away all the Robinsonian production, it's actually a pop song.

Judd Nelson, Sunday, 5 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Probably something by DMX.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 5 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Most of Slipknot
the singles of Linkin Park
'Movies' by Papa Roach

"and JUST liyyyk-ah tha MOOvieees-ah!

er, that's it really.

DavidM, Sunday, 5 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think "Movies" is by Alien Ant Farm, who also did the Smooth Criminal cover that was kind of fun for a very short while. Papa Roach, by the way, is a truly terrible band.

J*hn D*hl*m, Sunday, 5 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

"In the End" - what a chorus, man!
"My Way" - Limp Bizkit
Deftones is the nu-metal band that indie kids are allowed to like.

Yeahyeahyeahyeah. Of course, of course, that's right. Whata mistaka to maka. I hate Pap Roach.

Chop Suey is the only incrdibly amazing nu-metal song. David, your list suits great for worst nu-metal songs(taking crawling off) being slipknot the worst nu-metal band evah

Chupa-Cabras, Sunday, 5 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Chop Suey!" is the best nu-metal; "One Mic" by Nas is the best rap- rock. NERD is good, too. And "Stalemate" by Limp Bizkit.

doglatin, Sunday, 5 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Slipknot are goth industrial. Linkin Park are alternative. "Faith" by Limp Bizkit is not only the best nu-metal song ever, but the ONLY nu-metal song ever.

Sterling Clover, Sunday, 5 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

What indie kid likes the Deftones?

charlie va, Sunday, 5 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

That one over there. You know, the dark and moody one.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 6 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm not a kid, nor do I consider myself "indie," but I do sorta like the Deftones. That last album was all sprawly and croony and freaky, for a "metal" band anyway.

Lee G, Monday, 6 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm pretty fond of System of a Down myself, probably because they remind me of Faith No More, as opposed to the rest of the nu-metal bands, who remind me of Alice in Chains. Anyone who suggests that Limp Bizkit can do anything remotely listenable should be embarrassed.

Ronan, Monday, 6 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

System Of A Down and Deftones are both great. Slipknot has a great image, but I've yet to be convinced by their music. Linkin Park is a boyband and isn't really comparable to other nu-metal acts. Limp Bizkit is slapworthy.

I heard a fantastic nu-metal song once that I don't know the name of. The guy had a very distinctive voice. In the verse there was some "electricity/city" rhyme. The chorus was harder than the verse and had a jerky stop-start feel and was almost kind of jig-like in a weird way. The guitars were kind of dissonant IIRC. On the whole it sounded like it could be by a hc/emo band from the mid-90s but was improved enough to get radio play. This song gets my vote right now. I heard a good nu-metal song a couple days ago that was more synth-industrial. The singer sang sort of like a croony new wave guy in the verses and screamed in the chorus. I think the first line was "Tell me what am I supposed to do." I'm glad I'm getting some backup on "In the End". On the whole I think nu-metal is pretty interesting. In some of it I hear the discords and guitar noise used in post-hc and especially a lot of echoes of Goo/Dirty Sonic Youth (which period I'm really starting to see as being a high point for SY).

sundar subramanian, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Sundar, that's Toxicity by System of a Down. In The End is fantastic, especially the first time the guy goes, "I tried - so - hard" with the kick/cymbal accenting each word like they're pretending to be a real rock band or something.

Kris, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I hate "In The End" - for me it's just the sound of a million spoilt teenage kids screwing at their parents because they didn't buy them new trainers. I really hate it.

I would also say Deftones, the song (My Own Summer) Shove It as it has a seriously rockin' chorus and menacing mood.

Nick Collings, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Deftones My own summer kicks ass. Limp Bizkit suck, little fred durst sings like Michael Jackson's ass. Slipknot are pretty poor, only Leftbehind is good, Papa Roach are the best, Between angels and insects rocks, System of a down are better than evryone else though. Their album is better than all the res.

Hoax Man, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think Punk rock is pretty cool as well. Bands like NOFX, Rancid, Boy Sets Fire and Sublime are better than most Nu Metal bands. Anyway what kind of a name is Nu-Metal. Punk Rock has a much better name
