_Have Moicy!_ (credited to the Unholy Modal Rounders, Michael Hurley and Jeffrey Fredericks & the Clamtones) is as good as it's reputed to be. Which is to say: fantastic.

I'm partial to the Du-Tels' album, too, but even more partial to the set they played on my radio show a year or so back. I have NO idea where Peter Stampfel gets all that energy & love-of-life from, but I want some.

What are the gd Michael Hurley solo recs? Forced Exposure stock loads of 'em and (surprise) they claim they are all GRATE.

Invented the Bloodhound Gang, believe it or not. "They're big, they're round, they're all around..."

I prefer the Fugs, even though my dad occassionally played with Peter Stampfel in the 70s. Now Stampfel is a science fiction writer, from what I hear. And my dad sells furniture. Rock and roll!

First two albums classic as fuck. They're available as a twofer CD as well.

I also like "Indian War Whoop" and "The Moray Eels Eat the Holy Modal Rounders," but not quite so much.

On the Hurley tip, I was in Portsmouth last week. Get "Wolf Ways." Freakin' genius.

if you like them, check out the Godz. The earlier the Hurley, the better. If he's playing anywhere near you, check it out. Totally worth it.

Euphoria and Flop Eared Mule and Blues In The Bottle are all wonderful.

Totally forgot about this incredible band until Sweet Apple Cider came on random last night. I only have Indian War Whoop, but I could see myself becoming a huge fan. What else should I seek out?

So on the Friday after Thanksgiving, I was in Rochester, NY and now 78-year-old Peter Stampfel was playing for free in Bop Shop Records. Eh, it was ok. He was playing banjo and singing and telling stories. His voice is an acquired taste, for the most part.

Hadn't seen this thread before. As I mentioned on S/D Old Timey (etc.):

Also digging Peter Stampfel and the Brooklyn & Lower Manhattan Fiddle/Mandolin Swarm's Holiday for Strings, which, on "New Polly Wolly Doodle", for instance, and also this string band version of "Telstar", and all over, really, is quite action-packed, without seeming too busy or tweety.

― dow, Tuesday, December 6, 2016 5:22 PM (one hour ago) The voice sounds older, but still distinctively right and ripe for this music. Probably better with a band.
