The one that gets my vote sounds perversely similar to Bob Seger's "Still the Same".

"Faraway Beach".

Noodle Vague, Monday, 28 April 2008 21:25 (sixteen years ago) link

paw paw - just for the ridiculously great synth solo

nonightsweats, Monday, 28 April 2008 21:25 (sixteen years ago) link

"Cindy Tells Me"

o. nate, Monday, 28 April 2008 21:29 (sixteen years ago) link

Tough choice! I went with "Baby's on Fire"

Z S, Monday, 28 April 2008 21:32 (sixteen years ago) link

"Baby's On Fire."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 28 April 2008 21:32 (sixteen years ago) link

There's a song in the Sims 2 that rips "Paw Paw" synth very well :)

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 28 April 2008 21:36 (sixteen years ago) link

About half the tracks on that album are among my favorite songs by anyone ever, but I gotta go with the title track. It's been known to make me misty with its messed-up beauty.

DLee, Monday, 28 April 2008 21:42 (sixteen years ago) link

are you sure it isn't the stream of Eno's hot piss?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 28 April 2008 21:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Father, we've spent days on our knees
Gone in a year, for we've no where to be
Nowhere to be
Nowhere to be

Father stays, we're all on our knees
Down on our words and we've nothing to be
Nothing to be
Nothing to be

Father, down, we're all on our sails
Hail to our keys, but we've nothing these days
Nothing these days
Nothing these days

Father, give them straw men of faith
We're down on our knees and we've nothing to say
Nothing to say
Nothing to say

Steve Shasta, Monday, 28 April 2008 21:45 (sixteen years ago) link

i'll rep for dead finks

ciderpress, Monday, 28 April 2008 21:54 (sixteen years ago) link

I always say On Some Faraway Beach and I do so now

sonderangerbot, Monday, 28 April 2008 21:56 (sixteen years ago) link

Baby's On Fire - is it Eno's most famous/highest charting glam-era song?'s been covered heaps.

etc, Monday, 28 April 2008 23:10 (sixteen years ago) link

are you sure it isn't the stream of Eno's hot piss?

Misty, not just hot and wet.

DLee, Monday, 28 April 2008 23:38 (sixteen years ago) link

Cindy Tells Me! Though that was a tough choice.

our work is never over, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 00:54 (sixteen years ago) link

Needle's in the Camel's Eye. Best pure-scale guitar solo ever.

Jake Brown, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 00:58 (sixteen years ago) link

That Metropolitan Express cover linked to a few posts above is AWESOME! The Superpitcher cover is pretty good too.

Z S, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 03:52 (sixteen years ago) link

Title cut for me - save "Baby's On Fire" for the "Best Robert Fripp Solo" poll

Myonga Vön Bontee, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 02:53 (sixteen years ago) link

I have this CD. I used to play it in the car a lot when I worked as a courier. But I'm afraid I don't remember much of it now. The one I remember as being the best was "Dead Finks Don't Talk" though so I'll vote for that.
I'll give another listen in full tonight and see if I change my mind.

Meanwhile, can we talk about Eno's streaming (misty??) hot piss some more?

Bimble, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 03:15 (sixteen years ago) link

here come the warm jets
needles in the camels eye
cindy tells me
pawpaw negro blowtorch
on some faraway beach
dead finks dont talk
blank frank
babys on fire
driving me backwards
some of them are old

both the first and last song are probably in my top ten songs ever, though, and the whole album is great

69, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 05:00 (sixteen years ago) link

No love for "Some of them are old" yet...I know that one tends to fly under the radar when discussing this album, but I think it's an underrated tune.

Joe, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 12:20 (sixteen years ago) link

Had to go with "Needle." A couple of years ago they blasted it through the PA before a Wilco show at Brown University. It was the best thing I heard all night by far.

Jazzbo, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 12:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Not underrated by me. All tracks great, can't choose.

Tom D., Wednesday, 30 April 2008 12:37 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah the results for this should be interesting.

sleeve, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 14:35 (sixteen years ago) link

needles just over the title track

sleep, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 14:44 (sixteen years ago) link

what, no love for blank frank?

Cindy Tells Me

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 14:55 (sixteen years ago) link

Right now "Baby's On Fire".

fuck it:

1 Baby's On Fire
2 On Some Faraway Beach
3 Here Come The Warm Jets
4 Needles In The Camel's Eye
5 Cindy Tells Me
6 Blank Frank
7 Driving Me Backwards
8 Some Of Them Are Old
9 Dead Finks Don't Talk
10 The Paw Paw Negro Blowtorch

Euler, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 14:57 (sixteen years ago) link

I totally hate "The Paw Paw Negro Blowtorch". Both on this and the second record Eno went with a chump track second, and it kills the momentum both times.

Euler, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 14:58 (sixteen years ago) link

Jesus, someone should of really mentioned "Dead Finks Don't Talk" by now.

Michael Philip Philip Philip philip Annoyman, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 15:01 (sixteen years ago) link

"Needle" is really well used in Velvet Goldmine.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 15:03 (sixteen years ago) link

Mine would be:

On Some Faraway Beach
Here Come the Warm Jets
Needles in the Camel's Eye
Baby's on Fire
Some of Them Are Old
The Paw Paw Negro Blowtorch
Blank Frank
Driving Me Backwards
Dead Finks Don't Talk
Cindy Tells Me

Joe, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 15:19 (sixteen years ago) link

baby's on fire

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 15:24 (sixteen years ago) link

what, no love for blank frank?

-- Edward III, Wednesday, April 30, 2008 10:53 AM (1 hour ago)

Plenty of love for "Blank Frank," but There Can Be Only One.

DLee, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 16:04 (sixteen years ago) link

Does anyone else unfortunately have Elton Johns Can You Feel the Love Tonight stuck in their head after listening to Here Come The Warm Jets (the song)?

Michael_Pemulis, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 18:33 (sixteen years ago) link

Mm, no. I used to always have My Bloody Valentine stuck inmy head after listening to "Here Come The Warm Jets". No, really.

t**t, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 19:51 (sixteen years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Saturday, 3 May 2008 23:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Fuckin' "Needles..." of course (although "Baby's On Fire" is a close second).

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 3 May 2008 23:39 (sixteen years ago) link

"Cindy Tells Me" is perfect.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 3 May 2008 23:41 (sixteen years ago) link

hard to choose but lets say Paw Paw

Zeno, Saturday, 3 May 2008 23:56 (sixteen years ago) link

Had to go with 'Baby's on Fire' - damn thing just makes me smile.

BlackIronPrison, Sunday, 4 May 2008 00:50 (sixteen years ago) link

Everything's a close second, but "Needles".

I love me Tall Dwarfs but they pretty much owe a lot of their sound to this song alone.

Mackro Mackro, Sunday, 4 May 2008 01:54 (sixteen years ago) link

I have it in my head that I really like this album but picking songs off it seems to somehow diminish it. Taking Tiger Mountain would be a TOUGH poll though.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 4 May 2008 02:40 (sixteen years ago) link

Cindy Tells Me

The Brainwasher, Sunday, 4 May 2008 02:43 (sixteen years ago) link

Baby's On Fire, obv.

Blank Frank could have used someone like Helmet covering it in the mid-90s.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 4 May 2008 02:56 (sixteen years ago) link

Or Quicksand

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 4 May 2008 02:57 (sixteen years ago) link

Voted On SOme Faraway Beach so it gets some action

Niles Caulder, Sunday, 4 May 2008 15:25 (sixteen years ago) link

More action, I guess. Could've been any of them

Niles Caulder, Sunday, 4 May 2008 15:26 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm not telling what my choice was but I bet every track here gets at least one vote.

sleeve, Sunday, 4 May 2008 18:14 (sixteen years ago) link

This is the hardest one yet! I voted "Baby's On Fire" just over the title track but every song is great.

Sundar, Sunday, 4 May 2008 18:49 (sixteen years ago) link

"Some of Them Are Old," for the slide guitar solo.

Rock Hardy, Sunday, 4 May 2008 20:02 (sixteen years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Sunday, 4 May 2008 23:01 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm surprised to see "Blank Frank" come in as low as it did, though I didn't vote for it myself.

DLee, Monday, 5 May 2008 13:42 (sixteen years ago) link

Blank Frank was my second choice. a genius of pre- post punk song

Zeno, Monday, 5 May 2008 13:45 (sixteen years ago) link

surprises me that Some Of Them Are Old isn't up at like 5 or 6, but these are nicely varied.

I chose "On Some Faraway Beach".

sleeve, Monday, 5 May 2008 14:43 (sixteen years ago) link

six years pass...

question:

i have read conflicting accounts about who recorded the solo in "baby's on fire" and i would like to know whether it is fripp or manzanera?!

La Lechera, Monday, 1 December 2014 17:24 (nine years ago) link

That is definitely Fripp.

Letsby Avenue (Tom D.), Monday, 1 December 2014 17:25 (nine years ago) link

Ok thank you very much!
I thought so, but for some reason I felt like I read in the book I just read (the Sheppard one) that there was a dispute? Is there a name for that style of guitar playing other than Fripp-like?

La Lechera, Monday, 1 December 2014 17:29 (nine years ago) link

one year passes...
