the Screaming Blue Messiahs c/d

Digging further into 80's unjustified obscuria, whatever became of Wild Bill Carter's reckless trio, The Screaming Blue Messiahs? Shorn of scalp and thin of sanity, Carter jumped ship from Stiff Records' also-rans Motor Boys Motor to form his own band, who blessed the world with three proper albums in the mid-to-late 80's of stuttering guitar abuse & overdrive, then vanished into the veritable ether. Word on the street is that the man is now a motorcycle courier. Criminally undersung outside of their "one-hit-wonder" status (that the "hit" in question was the lamentably low-brow "I Wanna Be a Flintstone," and hardly indicative of the band's ability at all is also a shame), why don't the Messiahs get more of a mention? Or is it simply because they were crap? How come the world is blighted by multiple re-issues from woefully less inventive bands and the Screaming Blue Messiahs are relegated to the out-of-print dungeon?

Wait a minute.
Bald, mad and with a machine gun style guitar attack?
Didn't he become HammelOnTrial?

john-paul, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

"unjustified obscuria?" I can think of few bands that deserve this status more than the Screaming Bald Messiahs, except perhaps the Royal Court of China (though their 'hit' wasn't a novelty song, so I'm not sure about that.).

Andy, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh yeah, `cos LOOKOUT RECORDS is just generating legend after legend.

Hahahaha....just kidding.

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

stop saying veritable

mark s, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Punk bands are SUPPOSED to be obscure, biotch. Then you can be in the cool club when namedropping.

Andy, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

i think i own one of these records. because i liked the song 'wild blue yonder' at some point in time.

Ron, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Talking Doll" & "Jesus Chrysler Drives a Dodge" - totally classic. In fact, all of "Gun Shy" is classic. Most of "Bikini Red" was good too (why did it get all the stars on AMG?) Never heard the last one. Saw them live once - abso-fucking-lutely incredible show.

By the way, check out prices for these:

i loved bikini red for a week then *poof*

a-33, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Wall of Shame" from that last album, Totally Religious, is quite loud and good for driving fast.

paul, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Bowie liked them. However, being endorsed by DB in 1987 probably did them in

They rocked, once upon a time.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 16 May 2005 18:47 (eighteen years ago) link

I have all three albums on CD, plus the Good & Gone EP. All killer. Bikini Red is my favorite, Totally Religious my least favorite (a little too metal for me - yeah, I know, but I don't go to the Messiahs for metal).

pdf (Phil Freeman), Monday, 16 May 2005 18:49 (eighteen years ago) link

I like "Four Engines Burning", but otherwise Totally Religious was...er...totally forgettable.

Bikini Red is probably the most consistent, though I HATED "I Wanna Be a Flintsone," which branded them a stupid novelty act. Ugh.

Gun Shy was fucking brilliant.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 16 May 2005 18:52 (eighteen years ago) link

Ooh, I came here to sing the praises of "Wall of Shame," but I already did that 3 years ago.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 16 May 2005 18:55 (eighteen years ago) link

Screaming Blue Messiahs fans (I am one, by the way) owe it to themselves to check out the title track to Miranda Lambert's big current country hit *Kerosene* album. I swear on a stack of Bibles.

Sadly, the only SBMs record in my house now, though, is their Peel Sessions EP. I have no idea why I got rid of their *Gun Shy*, which was really great (though didn't it include all the tracks from the *Good and Gone* EP? Or maybe not.) I even used to have a record or two by Motor Boys Motor; didn't they *turn into* the Messiahs?

And yeah, I totally hated the Flintstone song too, AND HAD FORGOTTEN ALL ABOUT IT UNTIL ALEX JUST MENTIONED IT. DAMN YOU ALEX!!

xhuxk, Monday, 16 May 2005 18:57 (eighteen years ago) link

Heh. Sorry Chuck.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:00 (eighteen years ago) link

totally fucking classic. Bikini Red is still pretty solid as is Gun Shy. A pretty good live act, too.

don weiner, Monday, 16 May 2005 19:20 (eighteen years ago) link

amazing live act.

the way the lead singer used to bash his microphone stand aganst the guitar for more noise/feedback was really quite impressive and somewhat intimidating ..

surely its time for a nice reissue campaign .. or are they still out there on the circuit ?

mark e (mark e), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:24 (eighteen years ago) link

It's so nice to hear someone else say that.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:31 (eighteen years ago) link

At one point there was either gonna be a best-of or a box - I forget which, but I know the guy who wrote the liner notes before it went down the drain.

Because people suck so bad, this stuff is still all out of print.

Alex in NYC, Sunday, 17 May 2009 15:23 (fourteen years ago) link

Screaming Blue Messiahs also had excellent backing vocals, right up there with Van Halen....

Wounded Bird just reissued Gun-Shy and Bikini Red today. I just wish that label would start doing bonus tracks (first EP please) and liner notes.

Bowie used to rep for them all the time; he hinted in a couple of '87 interviews that he wanted to produce them.

My name is Kenny! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 7 July 2009 22:37 (fourteen years ago) link

I think they even supported him at some of his stadium shows at one point.

Enemy Insects (NickB), Tuesday, 7 July 2009 22:38 (fourteen years ago) link

Wait? Are they re-mastered?

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 7 July 2009 23:42 (fourteen years ago) link

The Wounded Bird stuff typically sounds like shit. :(

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 8 July 2009 00:35 (fourteen years ago) link

So when does the Motor Boys Motor album get reissued? That's when they were really ferocious. Or at least I thought so at the time, when I actually owned the thing. Even had a better Flinstones song than the second SBMs album, which I trashed as a sellout in Creem when it came out.

Wonder what my Peel Sessions EP would go for now...

There are plans for a box, currently titled Vision in Blues, that will include remastered versions of every album with B-sides appended (including the Good and Gone EP, expanded to 11 tracks as it is on iTunes), a live disc, and some extraneous material (a 7", reproduction backstage passes). Here's a mock-up photo of what it might look like; the rumor is it may be out in April.

The Vision in Blues box set (5 CDs, as follows: Gun Shy + all B-sides, Bikini Red + all B-sides, Totally Religious + all B-sides, the 11-track version of Good & Gone, and a previously unreleased live album, plus a live 7") is now available for pre-order. My order's already in, though there's no release date yet - all they're saying is "soon."

looking forward to the remasters, though i can't imagine there's much to be done about the drum production.

was just thinking re this yesterday so ta muchly for the tip off.
ordered.
cannot wait to hear this stuff again.

well, my boxset arrived.
sounding perfectly fine to me, but i aint an audiophile so could not say how they are in comparison to previous cd issues.
the booklet with bands history rundown is well done given i knew very little about the story of the band.
all in all a good summation of the bands catalogue.

mark e, Monday, 1 August 2016 17:36 (seven years ago) link

Waiting for mine to arrive - expect it'll take a little longer to reach the US.

Don Van Gorp, midwest regional VP, marketing (誤訳侮辱), Monday, 1 August 2016 19:21 (seven years ago) link

ahh yeah.
the laminate repro is a typical 'special extra' which is totally pointless.
however, the extra cd-r with 5 live tracks is bloody wonderful.

mark e, Monday, 1 August 2016 19:45 (seven years ago) link

(if i got the extras for early doors ordering, then you totally will have got them !)

mark e, Monday, 1 August 2016 19:46 (seven years ago) link

Don Van Gorp, midwest regional VP, marketing (誤訳侮辱), Monday, 1 August 2016 19:54 (seven years ago) link

just have to sit back and wait.
tis weird to be able to listen to a relatively successful bands complete catalogue in a couple of hours.
gotta love the era of the short album.
just a shame they could not get clearance for the peel session stuff.
i am assuming it was a clearance issue, as this has been released in conjunction with WEA who i guess have no access to the peel session.

mark e, Monday, 1 August 2016 20:03 (seven years ago) link

no neighbours tonight.
bloody hell this band knew how to make a fantastically brilliant noise.

mark e, Tuesday, 2 August 2016 21:21 (seven years ago) link

just been advised that the last 4 tracks on 'good and gone' are actually the peel session.

mark e, Tuesday, 2 August 2016 21:47 (seven years ago) link

Can't believe these guys get a reissue - good for them -- i'll throw a shout for "Killer Born Man". And on a completely unrelated note, Mr. Carter can plop a hot steamy one on a similarly-domed guitarist with the same initials.

It's £45.40 on Easy Action's site, and £28 (with shipping to US) on Amazon.uk, and $59 USD in the US Amazon site. That's quite a wide range in pricing. I ordered the cheapest option.

Fastnbulbous, Sunday, 7 August 2016 14:19 (seven years ago) link

Easy Action really jumped the price up - when I pre-ordered, I believe it was £35.

Just picked up the box set. (Found it in an actual brick n' mortar record store, if you can believe it. They had 3 copies.) What great racket these guys made! Can't believe the Bowie endorsement (plus that Flintstones song) didn't put them over the top. I remember seeing them in the 80's, Bill Carter playing with no pick, just using his fingers, a Tasmanian devil of blood, sweat and spit. (In an impeccable suit, no less.) I still wonder how it's possible to play like that and not shred your fingers to the bone each night.

henry s, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 21:27 (seven years ago) link

I only know the Flintstones song, what's a good example of what else they did

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 21:47 (seven years ago) link

Everything's on Spotify. My favorite album is Bikini Red (the one with "I Wanna Be a Flintstone" on it), but Gun Shy is really good too.
