Vinyl played at the wrong Rpm. C or D

Bands that sound good at both speeds: Auburn Lull and Longstocking (I still don't know what speed they're meant to be played at, both sound slightly wrong)

If you play SAW era female artist (e.g. Kylie) 7"s at 33 1/3 they sound like one of the rosters male artists (e.g. Rick Astley), and Rick Astley LP's sound like Kylie when played at 45. I like playing John Zorn's _Spy vs. Spy_ at 45 RPM - at 33 RPM, it's pretty frantic and overloaded to begin with. At 45 RPM, it's a monster.

I remember being very young and playing a 45 of "Bunny Hop" on my cousin's record player, which could handle 16, 33, 45, and 78 RPM. I'd play the regular part of the song super fast at 78, and then when they sing the "HOP! HOP! HOP!" part, I'd slow it down to 16 RPM, making it sound wonderfully sluggish - "HOPPPPPPPPPPP... HOPPPPPPPPP... HOPPPPPPPPPP." This did not please my cousin. This technique was also used with much delight on "The Pokey Little Puppy."

Another technique I like using, to vary the speed of vinyl automatically, is playing a 45 with a knocked-out center hole off- center on your turntable. You get some great drugged-out sounding stuff, particularly if the song has long sustained notes.

I remember reading someone's comments about playing Melvins and Helmet records at the wrong speeds a while ago.

**Play a Melvins record at 45 RPM** - "Hey, it's Helmet!"

**Play a Helmet single at 33 RPM** - "Hey, it's the Melvins!"

This knowledge may be a godsend to thrifty music consumers.

Back in high school, before I had a record player, I used my friend's turntable to tape the Drive Like Jehu 7".

First I tried it at 45, but I reasoned there was no way the singer's voice could be that high or the music could be that frenetic, so I ended up dubbing it at 33.

I didn't realize my mistake for a long, long time--which is weird because I bought the album soon afterwards, and it sounded nothing like my inadvertently screwed version of "Bullet Train to Vegas".

(But at either speed it sounded different from what I'd been expecting based on the Superchunk comparisons in Spin magazine...)

PS That Konk song on the "Anti NY" comp sounds way better at 45.

Why yes! Just click over to Goldwave and turn your regular speed .wav's and .mp3's into a virtual record with which the speed can be adjusted!

Try the opposite route if you can -- early Slowdive singles, mastered at 45 and played at 33, are just wonderful.

One time many years back, I decided to see what happened when the Fields of the Nephilim's "Sumerland" 12", mastered at 45, was played at 33. The result was just utterly awe-inspiring, a huge doomy sound which left myself and some friends in shock. Probably helped we were suffering from mild sleep deprivation, though.

i thought jaz coleman of killing joke settled out of court with geffen/nirvana over this very idea that "smells .." was some sort of rip off of "eighties" and that this provided coleman with funds to set up in nz and make orchestral rock versions of split enz etc ..

is this correct ?

Lee Ranaldo's From Here To Infinity is listed as being "Vari-speed".

I like Slint's S/T 10" on 45. I found out later I'd been playing it at the wrong speed, but I didn't care. It sounds so much better sped up.

1. Pinky & Perky slowed from 45 to 33 = two women, pitched just right. Like discovering that there is no Santa.

2. The Goons "Ying Tong Song" slowed 45 to 16 = Milligan/Sellers/Secombe, in their normal voices, again pitched just right, singing v-e-r-y slowly & carefully & deliberately. Much funnier than the original. (Which wasn't. At all.)

Conclusion: pitch-changing technology in 50s & 60s still in its infancy.

Also I played the last Go! Team single at the wrong speed for a week before I realised.

I know there are some CD decks out there with pitch control also, but they seem to be a rare breed. I wouldn't mind having one, though. In fact, the next time I have to buy a CD player, I'm making sure that it has that feature. (I've seen some Marantz and maybe Denon decks that did this. Not sure if they still make them that way.)

play at 33.3 +5 and it sounds amazing...way too fast as it was originally recorded (45rpm).

My brother collects classic Victorolas, and he left one at my mum's house several years ago. When initially cranked up, it would play very fast and then slow down. Since I didn't have any classic platters to play on it, I used this old Shriekback "Nemesis" 12" I bought for 25 cents. The playback was marvelous! Unfortunately, the heavy, blunt stylus fucked up the record. Oh well, it was only 25 cents.

Also, on David Byrne's vinyl Forestry EP is a version of "Nineveh" that's remixed by Jack Dangers. The record says 33 RPM; adjust it to 45 and voila, it's a killer Meat Beat Manifesto track!!!!
