6. X-Ray Hip
7. Contact Me Now

10. Junkie Blood (hmmm, nothing from Ain't My Lookout)

One thing I realized while making this up is that I'm pretty sure that "Ain't My Lookout" is overrated and "Full Blown Possession" is underrated.

That's good news Mr Que.
Seriously thought this band were pretty ace -but I'm going back 45 years. Any decent kids giving it right now?

Fer Ark, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 21:42 (fifteen years ago) link

Some nice live mp3's (downloadable) on the band's myspace page.

To be honest, I have listened to Crappin' You Negative, the Eureka ep and Ain't My Lookout so much, I cannot probably hear those tunes without the others.

She Blows Blasts of Static - The song seems to just explode at one point.

Dead Already - They would do some nice moody recorded pieces and I really like this one. I think doing this kind of tune kind of gave their records a bit of a different sound. It wasn't just a band walking into room and doing the live set (even though that can be fine).

Black Fuel Incinerator - This one even seems to explode even more. I love the crazy guitar effects on this one.

Skin Man Palace - This song rawks and pulls off some shuck and jive a whole lot better than Jon Spencer usually did.

Covered with Flies
Eureka I.V.
Parting Shot
Mysterious Friends
Spaced Out
Contact Me Now

I loved and cared about The Grifters music way more than a bunch of bands like Pavement, Sebadoh, Palace or others of that time that seemed to catch on more. They were pretty great the couple of times I got to see them live.

I don't know what happened, maybe they just lasted as long as they could last. There was some pretty good stuff on some of the outside stuff they did (especially the first Those Bastard Souls CD), but it just didn't quite jell like The Grifters records.

i only really know the 'table waters' 45 but both sides of that are great, particularly 'return to cinder'

noticeable lack of Full Blown Possession and So Happy Together... however I have found a huge appreciation for practically every song that didn't make the cut when choosing songs for these mixes

my top 10 songs!? that seems hard at the moment

So if Grifters is my favorite band, I wonder if this is why ^ ?
I like the idea that subtlety is mentioned in the description

it seems like pandora has a different description for every song
this is the third song I played and the second got a thumbs down
I wonder if someone actually characterized every song on pandora? crazy

two weeks pass...

well I was making some playlists before christmas (around 80 minutes each)

Trippy (I need to chop off a few ending seconds from these tracks if I want to put it on a cd)
9. Get Outta That Spaceship And Fight Like A Man

just switch this to 9. Spaceship (the single version which arguably better anyways)

c/d about my grifters mixes?

six years pass...

Thanks to some random music writing guy for noting that Sock and Crappin' have been reissued. Nice Pitchfork review, but misses the fact that this was a singles band, importance of Eureka, etc. I'll take what I get.

He used to write for some free weekly paper in NYC as I recall. Maybe M. Doughty? It's so hard to remember who's who.

Cool thing about those old Grifters albums is that they did quite a few different types of tunes. They would have something old rock and roll, then do something kinda heavy and weird, then get psychedelic then pull out something slow and soulful. They had some range, it wasn't that they just had this one sound. I got to figure the multiple lead vocalists is part of the reason why.

earlnash, Sunday, 21 August 2016 01:37 (seven years ago) link

I like all their records I've heard. I'd put Crappin in my all time top 20 easy, but I think I totally missed Full Blown Possession.
There aren't any details on these reissues, so assume they're not Deluxe-style, with singles and assorted tossoffs.
